Fire investigators treating Victoria bushfire as suspicious

Victoria's Country Fire Authority is treating as suspicious a bushfire which destroyed at least one property in the state's west. Another home has also been damaged in the blaze.

00:00The CFA has told us here at the ABC today that this fire has now been contained.

00:07Now as to the cause of the fire, investigations are ongoing.

00:10Officially it's being treated as suspicious, but that essentially means that CFA fire investigators

00:16haven't yet been able to rule in or out any possible cause of the fire.

00:21A fire started just south of Cadnock and it'll be investigated.

00:26Fire investigators are on the ground today, they were on the ground yesterday working

00:29with police and at this stage we're treating the fire as suspicious.

00:33Now as to what happens next, this fire is not over.

00:36Despite the fact that as I said it is contained, there is a control line around it, CFA tells

00:40us that it will continue to burn in stumps underground for weeks and months ahead and

00:46if we do get more bad fire weather, which we no doubt will, there is the potential that

00:51it could flare up and could threaten surrounding communities.

00:54So certainly everyone remains alert.
