Drug testing to commence at Gold Coast as Schoolies Start

Justice Gregory Geason has been sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order with 100 hours of community work. He was earlier found guilty of assault and emotional abuse or intimidation, after assaulting a woman in October last year.

00:00Gregor Gieson has avoided a jail term, but he has been sentenced to a 12-month community

00:08corrections order, and that includes 100 hours of community service.

00:14He's also required to submit to ongoing psychiatric or psychological treatment to gain insight

00:21into his offending.

00:23Now all of this harks back to late last year when he was charged, as you said, with one

00:28count each of assault and emotional abuse.

00:31That led to a criminal court hearing here at the Hobart Magistrate's Court, where an

00:37interstate magistrate ultimately found him guilty of both offences.

00:42In relation to the assault charge, that involved him forcefully shaking, pushing and punching

00:49a woman in the chest, and that caused her to fall backwards and strike her head against

00:54a mantelpiece, causing concussion and bruising.

00:58In relation to the emotional abuse charge, that related to Gregory Gieson using technology

01:05to track her movements and also to verbally abuse her with some quite vicious language.

01:14Now the prosecution had said that he should be given a term of imprisonment, even if it

01:21was suspended.

01:23The defence had argued that his reputation had been severely damaged over the course

01:28of all of the coverage relating to this case, and that they said no conviction should be

01:33recorded, but the magistrate today said that a conviction would be recorded.

01:39She said the offending was serious, that the victim had been left with ongoing physical

01:46and emotional trauma, and that Gregory Gieson had shown no sign of remorse.

01:53And how did Gregory Gieson react to the sentence, Jono?

01:58Well in the courtroom he showed no sign of emotion as the sentencing remarks were read

02:04out by the magistrate.

02:06Outside court we saw him with his family, and he was asked by the media whether he had

02:13any comments to make, whether he was remorseful for his actions, and he repeatedly said that

02:19he had no comments to make.

02:22Now what we heard this week in court is that he has tendered his resignation from the Supreme

02:30Court.

02:31He has been on full pay since the charges were laid last year, but we heard in court

02:36that he acknowledged he no longer had the moral authority to sit on the bench.
