Spain unites in solidarity with massive aid effort after devastating floods

As Valencia battles the aftermath of one of Spain's worst floods, young volunteers are using social media to organise aid, while food banks coordinate the distribution and collection of donations to support affected communities.

00:04These are just some of the items thousands of people are buying to send to Valencia after the floods.

00:09Several items are already sold out in supermarkets across Spain.

00:13Cordy is a Valencian who lives far from his homeland.

00:17He's taking it upon himself to mobilize his neighbors to send supplies to those affected by the catastrophe.

00:22I started to organize myself, to try to find contacts, people who were also organizing the aid,

00:28especially through Instagram and social media.

00:31We are coordinated and we always say, I need one thing, I need another, I need more now.

00:36Cordy does it on a personal level, but there are also organizations such as the food bank,

00:40coordinating donations from thousands of people.

00:42Every day there is a flurry of activity to ensure aid reaches Valencia.

00:46As much as we want, as it has been so terrible for everyone, and I still think that all of Spain is moved by what has happened,

00:54many people have made donations, companies have also made donations of products to be able to send there.

01:01Behind me there are tons of aid for those affected by the floods in Valencia.

01:05It is stored in the food bank.

01:07Their deposits throughout Spain are being used these days to store the tons of aid

01:12that they have received from numerous volunteers,

01:15both cleaning products and food for those affected.

01:19They will be sent little by little to Valencia, and when it is strictly necessary, in an orderly manner.

01:24This way they will avoid a collapse of the affected area.

01:31Well, distribute food, place, select food, and then send it to the entities.

01:37We need volunteers to be in the shopping malls to pick up food.

01:44Volunteer establishments receive twice as much as those without them.

01:50Once the donations are in, they are loaded onto trucks bound for Valencia.

01:54This brings great comfort to those with family there.

01:57Now I am much more at ease to see all the volunteers,

02:00to see all the networks of solidarity that are being created,

02:03but not only from Valencians, but from people from all over Spain,

02:07and from many other places in Europe,

02:09who are demonstrating the best of Europe and the European Union, which is solidarity.
