Celebrating 20 years of Halo 2. In 2001, the world of console gaming and first-person shooters was forever changed by the release of Microsoft’s Xbox platform with a launch title named Halo: Combat Evolved—a bold subtitle that the game wholly lived up to.

As the Master Chief, we set foot on an ancient ringworld named Halo, fought against the Covenant alongside our ragtag Marine allies and trusty guide Cortana, and uncovered the horrifying secrets in the depths of this alien megastructure before blowing it to smithereens. It seemed like the fight had been finished, but as the Chief himself said at the end: “I think we’re just getting started.”

It is November 9, 2004. It’s a Tuesday morning and you know that you’ve got to go to work or school, but that’s the last thing on your mind right now. Your eyes are bleary and bloodshot, your mind utterly scrambled, but it was totally worth it to have queued up at midnight outside your local retailer and stayed up all night playing Halo 2.

The Master Chief and Cortana returned to Earth to a hero’s welcome, but the Covenant aren’t far behind as the fight arrives in the city streets of Mombasa. But, what’s this? There’s another character whose story we follow—a disgraced alien warrior who is punished for his failure to protect the Halo ring discovered in the first game, given a chance at redemption, and-- wait... is that an energy sword in my hand? I’m playing as him?!

And that was just the campaign. In short order, you and your friends are playing together, not by lugging your chunky CRT television and Xbox around the corner to a friend’s house for another bout of system link screenwatching, but from the comfort of your own home through the advent of online play.

If you can believe it, that was twenty years ago.

As we mark this grandiose milestone for the series, we wanted to share with you everything that’s going on to celebrate all things Halo 2.

00:00You told me there wouldn't be any cameras, and you told me you were going to wear something
00:09nice.
00:10Halo was already great with CE, but it just took off with Halo 2.
00:20It was amazing to see it, like, everywhere.
00:23Dual wield, when you could shoot two guns at the same time.
00:26Dual wield being introduced in Halo 2 was massive.
00:30Walk over a weapon, and you're like, oh man, you can hold two.
00:34So good.
00:35I also just really love Halo 2's campaign.
00:37I don't think that one can be beat.
00:39But this demon, this Master Chief.
00:41By the time I learned the demon's intent, there was nothing I could do.
00:47Halo 2 was like, hey, this is an epic adventure.
00:51Let's go.
00:52Let's go follow this.
00:53Let's do more.
00:54We came back, and everyone was like, oh, we can take you in the story.
00:57I love the actor's voice of the Arbiter.
00:59It was phenomenal.
01:00What would you have your Arbiter do?
01:02Is that deep?
01:03I could listen to that all day.
01:05Being able to play as who you thought your enemy was.
01:08Something about seeing the reversal of it kind of humanized the Covenant to me more.
01:12Those stupid jackals, man.
01:13You turkey peak, you're done.
01:15Those jackals just take your head right off, man.
01:17Forget it.
01:18The end of the Gravemind level, where you watch the Covenant Civil War unfold.
01:23You could let them fight each other, but the music tells you, you gotta get in that.
01:27And I'm pretty sure in Halo 2, it's one of the hardest floods to deal with.
01:30Giving us that Covenant side of the story, really opening up the franchise.
01:33I think it took Halo from a really cool game to a mythos.
01:42Could we possibly make any more noise?
01:45I guess so.
01:47If you speak about legacy and defining moments, it's most definitely Xbox Live.
01:51As far as multiplayer games go in my life, player versus player enjoyment in life, it
01:57started with H2.
01:58That multiplayer aspect definitely changed the industry, really, because it changed how
02:03players interacted with each other.
02:05The Halo 2, Halo 3 community, those were all just really live and poppin', it was a really
02:10good time.
02:11That's probably the catalyst for all of the rest of this happening.
02:14You wanna be my friend?
02:15You're gonna play Halo with me, and we're gonna play through Halo 1 and Halo 2.
02:19You bet.
02:22Halo.
02:23Halo.
02:24Halo.
02:25Halo.
