00:00Congratulations to Gemma Burdick who has won the Outstanding Contribution Award

00:08awarded by the Scotsman Readers. What does it mean to you to win this award?

00:12I'm just completely overwhelmed and I'm so... I work in a team which have always been really

00:17passionate about working with addictions. It's a team which I think that we don't get

00:24so much recognition so I think that this time I really just want to take it back to

00:30Scottish Borders and just say that this is for us.

00:33The one thing that on you, when you were nominated, it was talked about when you went into somebody's

00:39home and helped them. Could you tell us about that incident?

00:43So this individual we had been working with very closely, working at home, and he went

00:50into hospital, which we got the ambulance to come and collect him. So we only worked

00:56Monday to Friday and on the Monday, because this was the Friday he went into hospital,

01:03on the Monday the first thing I done was went onto the hospital, like you can see who's

01:08in the hospital, went in, he wasn't there. And I was like, right, why's he being discharged?

01:16And I went and looked in, he wasn't there and I was like, look, I'm going to have to

01:22go and check that he's okay. Went to his home, next thing, he didn't answer the door, couldn't

01:28get through, could see his window was open, looked through the window and unfortunately

01:33he was lying on the floor in disarray, like an absolute mess. And the next thing I knew

01:40I was climbing through his window. We had Naloxone with us, I was with one of my support

01:45workers and she was great as well. We work in a team, we have each other and we had to

01:55climb through his window and I had to give him Naloxone. It was just amazing that he

02:01forever thanks us and that was only six months ago and he is alive and he totally thanks

02:07us all the time. So you're saving people's lives? 100% and that is ultimately the best

02:13thing that I'll ever think about my job, is saving people's lives but not even saving

02:19people's lives but just being there for people and trying my best. Well done, where are you

02:24going to keep it? I don't know! I'm so pleased, this is unreal. I love it, congratulations.

02:37volunteer award. So congratulations. Thank you so much. Can you tell me what it means

02:43to you to win the award? Yeah, it's fantastic. I'm a first responder with the Scottish Ambulance

02:47Service in the NHS Forth Valley. I'm one of many hundreds that volunteer across Scotland

02:52day in day out to help the Scottish Ambulance Service and help patients at their time of

02:56need. It's a really unique type of volunteering and I would really encourage anyone that's

03:00interested in healthcare to look at the Scottish Ambulance Service for any volunteering opportunities.

03:05Excellent, so you've pretty much answered everything that I was going to say, so thank

03:08you very much. Great, thanks so much. This is Alison Stevenson who's just won the Unsung Hero Award.

03:13You work at Putlockery Community Hospital. Congratulations, what does it mean to you to

03:18win this award? Well it's absolutely amazing. I didn't even know I was up for the award.

03:23Did you not? I thought the emails were scammed. Oh really? I actually spoke to somebody else

03:29and then obviously a couple of my colleagues had reported for us which is Karen and Debbie

03:35who work in reception. Excellent. So I'm just amazed, absolutely amazed. And it's the

03:41Unsung Hero Award. Do you think there are a lot of people in the NHS that are unsung? Yes, definitely.

03:48The day I go above and beyond what I'm supposed to do, I just do what I think I want to do.

03:57And I don't think I deserve an award for doing what I think is correct and

04:01it's what I'm brought up to do, basically. Doing your job. So what do you do on a daily basis?

04:07I'm actually the ward clerk. I help out in the ward. If the belt buzzes are going off, I jump in and help

04:14the healthcare systems out. I help in reception. I basically help everywhere. That's why you've got

04:20an award. Congratulations. Thank you very much. Thanks for talking to us. Well done.
