On November the 9th, 1974, Washington was hit by a fire which would have a huge effect.

Usworth Secondary School was ablaze, and by the time the flames were under control, this was the aftermath.

Most of the building had been wrecked, and all that was left was a tangle of girders.

1,400 pupils were rehoused in 35 mobile rooms.
