00:00An epidemic of dengue and leptospirosis cases in some places in Metro Manila.
00:06It is still followed by heavy rains of the next typhoon.
00:09Mark Salazar has the story.
00:15The Department of Health is warning Metro Manila
00:19that dengue has reached the alert threshold in the region due to the high number of patients.
00:24Four LGUs are at the epidemic level,
00:27Quezon City, Marikina, Manila, and Pateros.
00:30When the alert threshold is reached,
00:33it means that it is higher than normal cases.
00:40That's why we need to be careful and implement measures
00:44so that the disease won't spread.
00:47From January 1 to October 26,
00:51the number of dengue cases in Metro Manila reached 24,232.
00:56It is 34 percent higher than the 18,020 cases
01:00that were recorded at the same time in 2023.
01:04Sixty-six people have died from dengue this year.
01:08Most of those affected by dengue are boys aged five to seven.
01:13Although Quezon City recorded the highest number of cases of dengue, 6,208,
01:19Pateros showed the highest attack rate of the virus.
01:24The attack rate is the percentage of people in a group
01:30or place that has been infected for a certain period of time.
01:34In simple words,
01:36this is the number of people infected compared to the total population that may be affected.
01:43This gives an idea of how widespread or how fast a disease spreads
01:50in a particular population or place.
01:53DOH reminded people of the 4S strategy to fight dengue,
01:59or the Search and Destroy,
02:02Secure Self-Protection, like insect repellent lotion,
02:07Seek Early Consultation with a doctor,
02:10and Spraying and Fogging.
02:12Another case of leptospirosis in Metro Manila was also reported by DOH.
02:17Five LGUs in Manila are at the epidemic level of leptospirosis.
02:23They are Caloocan, Quezon City, Navotas, Pasay, and Taguig.
02:27From January to October, 2,734 cases of leptospirosis were recorded.
02:34This is 90 percent higher than last year.
02:39There are already 260 deaths,
02:41which is why the fatality rate of the disease is almost 8 percent.
02:45If a child is more prone to dengue,
02:48leptospirosis is 55 to 59 years old.
02:52Dengue and lepto also provide the need for intensified public health interventions
02:59to stop the increase in the number of cases,
03:02reduce the number of deaths,
03:04and lower the transmission in the community.
