All we know about horror Cowgate bus crash

Edinburgh was rocked over the weekend by the news that a 74-year-old man was killed in a horror bus crash on Cowgate. Here is all we know about what happened and what has been confirmed by police.

00:05Our city was rocked over the weekend after news that a 74 year old man had

00:10been killed in a horror bus crash in the city's Cowgate. Now there was a lot of

00:14misinformation, speculation and rumours going around in social media in the

00:18aftermath of the incident, but this is all we know about what happened and what

00:22has been confirmed by police. So police were called to the bustling city centre

00:29street at around 7.25 p.m. on Saturday November 2nd and at that time officers

00:35said that they were called to a serious road traffic incident. The road was taped

00:40off by police immediately and many officers were seen standing guard in the

00:44area. A short time later surrounding streets including Candlemaker Row and

00:49Blair Street were also closed off and the views from the bridges above were

00:53covered up. Forensic teams were seen in the area and two tents were erected in

00:58two parts of Cowgate as well. Now police confirmed on Sunday morning that a 74

01:04year old man had been hit by a single-decker bus on the street and had

01:08died at the scene. They said this was a tragic incident. One of the reasons that

01:13this story has had such an effect on people in the city is that really

01:17graphic images and videos of the victim were shared widely on social media in

01:20the hours after it happened. In that same statement yesterday morning police

01:25urged members of the public to stop sharing the images as they said that

01:29they were causing distress and upset to the man's family. Now with it being

01:34Halloween weekend the nightclubs and pubs in Cowgate were very busy with

01:38revelers and they were actually asked to leave clubs and pubs at one point in the

01:42night. Others who were walking in surrounding streets were also urged to

01:46avoid the area. One witness, a local businessman who was walking home from

01:51work at the time said that the incident and the major emergency services

01:54response had left him feeling scared. Now police haven't yet confirmed the

01:59identity of the man who died but many have taken to social media to pay

02:03tribute to him and hundreds have said that their thoughts and prayers are with

02:06his loved ones. Police have also asked that anyone with any information about

02:10the incident call Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 3395 of
