The Nighttime Industries Association has been aware that a number of areas from our industry
00:11
are slowly eroding away as a result of lots of different forces and reasons and policies.
00:17
And so it was important for us to undertake a big piece of research to get a full picture
00:22
of what we're dealing with.
00:24
What is the general sector's kind of outlook following the budget for the nighttime sector?
00:31
The Chancellor's announcement on Wednesday was hugely infuriating for not just the nighttime
00:37
economy but also culture and hospitality.
00:39
So I think we are going to see unfortunately more businesses go to the wall.
00:45
We are likely to see people still being very careful with their money.
00:50
There are still a lot of challenges on day-to-day costs and so for us we didn't take anything
01:00
positive from the budget other than our workforce, our labour pool, may have a little bit more
01:06
money in their pocket.
01:08
Michael Kill, the CEO of Nighttime Industries Association, said minimum wage hikes may seem
01:12
like a win for workers but for small nightlife and hospitality businesses already stretched
01:17
thin, it's at breaking point.
01:19
He went on to say that the fear across the sector is real and should not be ignored.
01:24
This isn't just about bricks and mortar, this is about people's livelihoods.
01:27
This is about artistic excellence in our cities, it's also about community cohesion and that
01:33
economic contribution to the UK's top level economy.
01:37
So from our perspective there is a lot more here to lose than just venues like clubs and
01:42
music venues.
01:44
This really is about a significant slice of the UK's workforce, we're the fifth biggest
01:51
industry in the UK and it isn't just about the spaces that we meet up and dance but it's
01:55
the industry that's at stake here.
