The number of companies opened across the EU is higher than those closing, with 3.4 million new companies created in 2022 versus 2.8 million that went out of business.

00:09In the EU, there are over 32 million businesses.

00:15They employ about 160 million people.

00:20What sort of businesses are they?

00:2499% are small or micro enterprises with fewer than 50 employees.

00:33They might be small, but they generate almost a third of the whole EU turnover.

00:41The number of businesses across the EU appears to be growing,

00:46with 3.4 million new companies created in 2022 versus 2.8 million that went out of business.

00:59The countries that launched the most new businesses compared to the size of the market

01:06were Lithuania, Portugal and Estonia.

01:10The lowest birth rates were recorded in Austria, Denmark and Italy.

01:18On the other hand, the countries with the highest share of companies that closed down

01:24were Estonia, Bulgaria and Ireland.
