Public school classes disrupted as thousands of teachers attend union meeting

It's been a late start for many school students across New South Wales because thousands of teachers have been taking part in a union meeting.

00:00Well, this morning's meeting comes after months of negotiations between the Teachers Federation

00:07and the New South Wales Government.

00:09Teachers were expected to be given an update on the latest offer from the New South Wales

00:15Government on pay and conditions.

00:19Around 60,000 teachers were taking part in this meeting this morning, which has meant

00:24that students at public schools across the state had their classes disrupted.

00:30Some schools did advise parents to, if they could, keep their children at home until around

00:3610 o'clock this morning because classes were not able to get underway until then.

00:43We have seen a pretty steady stream of students arriving here at Waverley Public School.

00:49From the normal start time this morning, parents were assured that if their children did attend

00:55school they would be cared for at school, but that classes would not be able to get

01:00underway until that meeting was over.

01:02As I said, around 60,000 teachers across the state taking part in those meetings and negotiations.

01:10So some disruption to classes this morning, but thankfully we have been assured no disruption

01:16to HSC exams.

01:18Year 12 students across the state are of course undergoing their final exams at the moment

01:24and we were assured that HSC exams were not impacted by this stop work this morning as

01:31those 60,000 teachers took part in that meeting with an update on those negotiations due later

01:39on this afternoon.
