Actually, I'm here today to accept this on behalf of my dear friend, Dr. Nancy Wexler.

She is the true recipient of this honor.

I first got involved with the Hereditary Disease Foundation many years ago

when I learned about it from Nancy's father, Dr. Milton Wexler, in Los Angeles.

He established the foundation in 1968 after his wife, Lenore, was diagnosed with Huntington's disease,

which meant that their daughters, Alice and Nancy, were also at risk.

Huntington's is a disease. It's fatal.

It's inherited brain disorder that causes progressive psychiatric changes,

cognitive problems, and uncontrollable movements.

It usually presents itself between ages 30 and 50,

but it can strike as early as two years old or as old as 80.

And each child of an afflicted parent has a 50% risk of inheriting the gene,

which causes the disease, and currently there is no cure.

Dr. Nancy Wexler led a team of medical researchers traveling to Venezuela from 1979 to 2002,

which is an area that has the world's highest prevalence of Huntington's,

where they gathered clinical data from thousands of patients and their families.

And Nancy was tireless in her search for the gene that causes Huntington's.

Well, in 1983, because of Nancy,

the foundation miraculously identified the Huntington's disease gene using her clinical data.

Now, this stunning discovery launched a genetic test for Huntington's,

and it laid the foundation for all the following research of the disease.

The foundation also advances research that directly impacts other diseases,

like ALS, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's.

That's quite an achievement.

Nancy found the gene, and because of that, someday they will find a cure.

And I'm honored to be a member of the board and a supporter for 40 years.
