A new poll finds that a majority of Americans don’t want Donald Trump to quash federal criminal charges against him if he wins the election. Veuer’s Matt Hoffman reports.

00:00A majority of Americans don't want Donald Trump to quash federal criminal charges against him if he wins the election.

00:06That's according to a new USA Today-Suffolk University poll released Monday.

00:1058% of respondents said it would be wrong for Trump to direct the Justice Department to drop the charges he's facing.

00:16Mathematically, that must include some Trump supporters, who made up 44% of the poll's respondents.

00:22But it's extremely unlikely that Trump would fulfill this desire.

00:25While it's been customary to expect the White House to maintain the Justice Department's independence,

00:29there's no actual law saying the president can't direct the department to close an investigation, according to NPR.

00:36And ABC News reports that one candidate under consideration to run a Trump Justice Department as attorney general is Eileen Cannon,

00:43the Trump-appointed Florida judge who has already rejected the federal case against Trump for mishandling classified documents.

00:49That case is being appealed.

00:51Trump also faces federal charges for attempting to steal the 2020 election.
