00:08Sites and apps like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp could face hefty fines
00:12if they don't comply with the new Online Safety Act, which is expected to take effect early next year.
00:17Ofcom's chief executive, Dame Melanie Dawes, emphasised that the responsibility for online safety
00:22lies with the tech firms, not with parents or children.
00:26Under the new law, companies will have three months to conduct risk assessments
00:30and make necessary changes to better protect users.
00:33The Act mandates that platforms safeguard children from harmful content,
00:36including self-harm materials, pornography and violence.
00:40However, some critics argue that progress has been too slow.
00:43The Online Safety Act aims to hold tech giants accountable for the content on their platforms.
00:48Ofcom will have the authority to fine companies up to 10% of their global revenue for breaches
00:53or even block their services altogether.
