00:07that are of public interest.
00:09Muzaffar Shahmalo of University Science Islam Malaysia said only convicts in lighter cases
00:14should be given consideration for house arrest.
00:18He said this was crucial so that the government would not send the wrong signal to the public.
00:23Last week, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government planned to introduce a
00:27new law that will allow house arrest as an alternative punishment for certain offences.
00:32There are currently no legal provisions for prisoners to serve their jail sentences under
00:36house arrest.
00:37Meanwhile, political analyst Taufiq Yaqub believed the bill should not be linked to
00:41Najib Razak, saying it was merely part of the government's efforts to reduce overcrowding
00:45in prisons.
00:46However, MUDA Central Committee member Dhabi Chu questioned if the house arrest bill was
00:51aimed at benefiting certain parties.
