Sex education with AI in India
DW (English)

In India, it’s often difficult to talk openly about sex and sexual health. One AI chatbot aims to fill that void by breaking down stigma and educating women about their bodies. To do so, it had to learn nuanced language.

When Kalyani Kadam first got her period, she didn't know anything about it.
00:08
She had a lot of misconceptions.
00:13
My grandmother used to say, if a snake tastes the period blood from discarded sanitary pads,
00:19
then you'll never get your period again and you'll never be able to have children.
00:23
She found out only recently that that wasn't true, after asking an AI chatbot, because
00:28
that time had come for her daughter too.
00:34
When my daughter first got her period, I repeated what I had been told, that you'll have problems
00:38
if any animal tastes your period blood.
00:41
But then I asked the Menabola app about it, and it cleared up the misconception.
00:45
I explained to my daughter that it was actually a superstition.
00:52
As a super user of the ChatTPT-powered chatbot, she can also ask questions on behalf of other
00:58
women.
00:59
Now, whenever I have a question about periods, pregnancy or even mental health, we put it
01:07
to the chatbot and get an answer.
01:12
Whatever the women ask me, I put it in the chatbot and it replies.
01:17
In India, AI chatbots like Menabolo, Snare.ai or JustAsk offer users medically accurate
01:23
answers in a confidential and non-judgmental manner.
01:27
The information in the Menabolo app comes from doctors who tailor it to regional needs.
01:32
We have created a medical database and we have restricted it to the Indian context.
01:39
For example, a user has asked that, oh, I've had relations and I don't want to conceive
01:45
at the moment.
01:47
What should I do?
01:48
The obvious answer is that you can have ECP, emergency contraceptive pill.
01:53
So the answer that could come from here is that you could take an ECP anywhere between
01:59
five days of having relations.
02:01
But in the Indian context, that would not work.
02:03
The ECPs that are available here usually are working only for 72 hours.
