The new speed cameras saving lives across regional Australia

A new initiative has been introduced in NSW to combat the number of rising fatal crashes on regional and rural roads.

00:00The number of fatal crashes increased in 2023 as Australia's regional and rural

00:11roads claimed 811 lives. More than 90% of Aussie drivers have used regional, rural

00:17and remote roads in the past year, but many drivers admit they're breaking laws

00:22on regional roads when they believe it's safe and they have less chance of getting

00:26caught. Initiatives have been put in place to help combat the rising road toll,

00:31including new point-to-point speed cameras in regional NSW. The cameras calculate a driver's

00:37average speed between two points and are being used on the Pacific and Hume highways.

00:42Originally designed for trucks, these cameras are now monitoring cars as well,

00:46as NSW joins the rest of mainland Australia and the ACT in adopting this tech for all vehicles.

00:53While fixed safety, mobile and point-to-point cameras are used across Australia, many experts

00:58are calling for more police presence on regional roads to help enforce safer driving habits.
