ACT Opposition leader gives middle finger to journalists

The now infamous incident has made national headlines and Elizabeth Lee's political opponents aren't entirely sympathetic. “I've not been tempted to flip the bird, but I’ve certainly had my share of frustrations in press conferences.” “it's not something I think the Canberra community would expect to see from someone leading a major political party.” “Over the course of a campaign you learn a lot about how individuals respond to immense pressure - the Canberra liberals’ leader would be quite frustrated given everything that has gone wrong in their campaign.” “I think for Canberrans I would hope that they don't see literally a second in terms of where I’ve said 'yes, I let an emotional reaction get the better of me' and judge me based on that.” Ms. lee puts the incident down to frustration with a journalist. Lee: “Andrew Barr who's been in charge of the act treasury” Reporter: “I’m not talking about Andrew Barr I’m waiting for you to answer the question.” Lee: “I’m saying...are you finished?” That journalist - region media's Ian Bushnell - wasn't at the liberals' media event today. He did defend his approach and professionalism with an opinion piece - writing the incident: "...definitely calls into question whether the Opposition Leader has the temperament for the top job." And he argued he takes the same approach with others, writing. "I, as do every other Canberra journalist, constantly grill Mr. Barr, but he is a much more experienced politician and has the benefit of long incumbency." The chief minister agrees press conferences can be a headache. “That's part of the role in government every week you have to make difficult decisions, give press conferences where you're likely to get questions that are uncomfortable” “I accept...I absolutely accept and respect that journalists have a job to do and that's why I’ve fronted up, I’ve fronted up each and every time to take on a lot of the tough questions and I will continue to do so.” Whether she and other leaders have given the answers voters are seeking will become clearer on Saturday.
