00:00Deodorant is a product most people use on a daily basis, however a new study raises
00:08concern about not what it might do when applied to our skin, but what happens when we breathe
00:12it in.
00:13Ingredients and products are tested for safety, however a Swiss team of researchers wanted
00:17to look specifically at what might happen after the product nucleates, or the process
00:21by which a product hits the air and forms new particles.
00:24Those may then coagulate into larger ultra-fine particles that can then make their way into
00:29our bodies via our lungs.
00:31The researchers say that we still don't know all of the effects of this process, a concerning
00:34notion, considering the proximity in which they are applied to our face, often in tight
00:39bathrooms.
00:40So the team looked at several samples of deodorant body spray, hand lotion, roll-on deodorant,
00:45perfume, and dry shampoo hairspray.
00:47Looking at the emissions released from each, they also conducted a second test, where ozone
00:51was introduced into the area where each was used, and the results of those reactions were
00:55also observed.
00:57In the end, they found that in all cases except one, a veritable smog was produced
01:01in the area, one that included a particulate growth rate much higher than that in outdoor
01:05urban areas.
01:06The one outlier was the roll-on deodorant, which did not produce this effect, with the
01:10researchers saying about it, I know this is difficult to hear, but we're going to have
01:14to reduce our reliance on these products, or if possible, replace them with more natural
01:18alternatives that contain fragrant compounds with low chemical reactivity.
