00:00Good afternoon, I'm William Thio and I'm here for PTV News Now and right off the bat, we

00:10kick off this afternoon's stories with the Philippine Army is in extended celebratory

00:16mood and rightfully so.

00:18One of its products, Major Florin P. Herrera over the weekend was bestowed the Alexander

00:24R. Nininger Award for valor at arms.

00:27Herrera, an international graduate of the U.S. Military Academy Class of 2013, was presented

00:34the award by the West Point Association of Graduates at the Cadet Mess Hall of the Military

00:40Academy in New York in recognition of his exceptional courage shown during the five-month

00:46siege of Marawi City from May to October in 2017.

00:50He is the first Filipino graduate of the renowned Military Academy to ever win such a prestigious

00:57honor.

00:59With a war in Gaza having spread to the north in Lebanon and perhaps even farther to the

01:04east in Iran, and while Ukraine and Russia are nowhere near a deal on a truce, yet another

01:10hot spot or flashpoint along the 38th parallel is sitting on a knife's edge, with escalating

01:17tensions likely to boil over between North and South Korea.

01:22And earlier today, South Korea confirmed a number of roads interconnecting both countries

01:27have been blown up and completely destroyed by the North, as animosities between the two

01:33escalate over North Korea's claim Seoul flew drones over its capital, Pyongyang.

01:39For its part, Seoul or South Korea refused to confirm Pyongyang's drone accusations,

01:45but instead warned it would harshly respond and punish its neighbor to the North once

01:50the safety of South Korean citizens are put at risk.

01:54Meanwhile, North Korean strongman and President for Life Kim Jong-un covened a top national

02:00security huddle on Monday in which he directed a plan of immediate military action once the

02:05order to respond or strike is given.

02:08But South Korea is also talking and acting tough, especially with a solid backing of

02:14allies behind like Japan and the United States, which is more nuclear-capable than Pyongyang

02:19and Kim Jong-un could ever muster.

02:24Columbus Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the second Monday of

02:29October.

02:30In 2019, the progressive state of California opted to officially celebrate Indigenous Peoples'

02:36Day in the place of the centuries-old tradition of commemorating Christopher Columbus on such

02:43a day.

02:44WHO's Jinya Doolot paid a visit to the Getty Museum where a couple of thousands gathered

02:50to celebrate the auspicious occasion.

02:54Andrea Jimenez, founder of Herb Club LA, leads a garden tour at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles

03:02during a festival celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day.

03:06She shows the visitors native plants to California, for example, yarrow, a flowering plant that

03:13is known for its medicinal properties.

03:16Native peoples would use it for healing wounds, for healing indigestion, for healing all sorts

03:25of things.

03:26And it has been known as one of those plants that is called a panacea.

03:30The third annual celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day at the Getty Museum drew about

03:362,000 people, making the event one of the biggest in Los Angeles, says festival founder

03:42Chelsea Anderson.

03:43So the mission of the family festival is to share resources of artists and makers from

03:50Indigenous diaspora in Los Angeles.

03:52We love the educational component of sharing traditions of the past, but also we really

03:57celebrate contemporary voices and contemporary artists.

04:01One of the artists, Shigo Belenetso, a dancer with the Wild Horse Native American Association,

04:08says Indigenous Peoples' Day brings recognition to his people, who lived on the land before

04:13Europeans came.

04:15I remember growing up, some teachers, they didn't even know we exist.

04:22Some people think we're extinct, and we're not.

04:24We're here, we're alive, we're well, and we're thriving.

04:27And we're passing this to our next generation, our singing, our dancing, our traditions.

04:34The state of California does not observe Columbus Day, having replaced it with Indigenous Peoples'

04:40Day in 2019.

04:42Solange Aguilar, a Native American poet, says growing up it was a struggle celebrating Christopher

04:49Columbus Day.

04:50There's this story about him that he discovered America, but you can't really discover something

04:54when there are already people there.

04:56It's important to learn that history and understand that he was a really bad guy, he was awful,

05:00and that history of him, that mythos or whatever, is a real thing, it's a real trauma that we carry.

05:06Erica Baranwal, who moved last month to Los Angeles from Columbus, Ohio, is celebrating

05:13Indigenous Peoples' Day with her family for the first time.

05:17She believes recognizing Native peoples will make a better future for her mixed-race kids.

05:24That's important to us, for our kids to be able to grow up without people making so many

05:29assumptions about them based on the color of their hair, the color of their skin, their last name.

05:35Columbus Day is currently a federal holiday in the U.S., unlike Indigenous Peoples' Day,

05:40whose status varies state by state.

05:43On Monday, New York City is holding one of the biggest Columbus Day parades in the country,

05:49celebrating Italian-American heritage, culture, and achievements.
