Just recently, there was a signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of Education

led by Secretary Sunny Angara and Chalkboard Incorporated.

This is to implement the education program in public schools

to help address the literacy and numeracy of K-10 students.

and how did you establish this partnership with the Department of Education?

We are Chalkboard. We are an educational services and technology company.

We actually began as a pioneering tutoring platform

that caters to Filipino students all over the world.

But with our insights during the pandemic and our experiences,

we launched this education program.

It's our flagship initiative and it's tailored to address the learning gaps

of literacy and numeracy of our students among public schools here in the Philippines.

And just recently, with our partnership with the Department of Education,

it actually formalized the role of DepEd when it comes to logistical support.

And with the help of the Department of Education,

we now know which schools in the Philippines

really need intervention when it comes to reading and math.

On the other hand, as a Chalkboard, we handle the program design.

Of course, we make sure that this is aligned with the curriculum of the Department of Education.

At the same time, we implement the tutoring on the ground.

So we can implement the program in person

or if there's a need for it to be digital or through the digital platform,

we can also do the tutoring in that way.

Okay, so reading and math are the subjects that you help students with.

And I understand even parents can be involved in the tutoring sessions.

But what is the structure of this educational intervention?

What is the difference between this and the usual tutoring for students?

Well, in terms of our structure,

first of all, we start by recruiting community tutors

because the purpose of this is to give them jobs.

And of course, in terms of recruiting community tutors,

the same goes for teaching our students.

They are the ones we choose.

And the program, again, is for the students

who have difficulty in reading and math.

So for the students who are already good at it,

this program is not for them.

But like we always say,

this program is all-inclusive.

It means that there are programs for them,

our acceleration program.

Because our academic program is academic remediation,

acceleration, and livelihood.

So academic, it is focused on two things,

literacy and numeracy.

Then, in terms of acceleration,

this is in terms of digital literacy for the students.

And of course, in terms of remediation,

again, for the students who have difficulty in reading and math.

And of course, the last part of the structure,

this is the livelihood program for the community tutors.

The same goes for the schools where this is beneficial

because part of the program,

we provide good and balanced nutrition for our students.

So our food providers are the schools.

We buy food from them.

So the schools earn.

If there are no more canteens in our schools,

the parents cook.

And of course, as part of our empowerment to them,

we provide them with livelihood

based on the food that they cook and prepare for their children.

Especially since we want this educational program to be effective.

This is one of the strengths of the Chalkboard Aral Program

because we normally employ continuous assessments.

We have pre-assessments.

And then we also conduct mid-term assessments,

mid-term of the program.

after the program.

So in that way,

we compare the reading or math level of the students

we also measure the progress of each student

Basically, we're almost nationwide.

Of course, we started here in Metro Manila,

first in Pasig.

And of course, from Pasig,

it spread to other cities.

we also conducted an Aral Program in Antipolo.

we also conducted an Aral Program in Batac City,

in Ilocos Norte,

and even in Albay Province.

And now,

we are conducting the Aral Program in Concepcion, Iloilo,

and also in our upcoming program in Naga City, Cebu.

So it's not just here in Metro Manila.

It's nationwide.

we make sure that they will create a very positive impact

Normally, again, our program is data-driven.

The selection here is done by the Department of Education,

Basically, they have lists of students

who are having difficulty in reading and math.

we will select possible participants.

And so far,

the number of participants in our program

is around 1,900 students nationwide.

And we have reached out to more than 90 schools

in the entire Philippines.

So that's a lot.

And we have been conducting this program for only two years,

since last year.

And many LGUs are now signifying their intention
