Five things about the weather this week - 16/09/24
Transcript
00:00September sunshine for everyone.
00:02And where does Boris go next?
00:04Here are five things you should know about the weather this week.
00:07One, high pressure will bring us a dry week of weather
00:11and plenty of September sunshine.
00:13Sure, there'll be some cloud and a bit of morning fog in places,
00:18but high pressure means the air is mostly sinking through the sky.
00:22And that's why the weather will be fine this week.
00:25Two, it's warming up.
00:26It's been a chilly start to September,
00:28but with more sunshine comes higher temperatures.
00:31This week, parts of western Scotland and the south of England could hit 25 Celsius.
00:36And the nights will be getting warmer too.
00:39In fact, due to something called an inversion,
00:42weirdly, some hills and mountains could have the highest overnight temperatures.
00:47Three, Storm Boris.
00:49The devastating floods across central Europe were caused by extreme rainfall from Storm Boris.
00:55Climate change is, of course, making extreme rainfall events like this more likely and more frequent.
01:02Thankfully, Boris and the rain it brought are fading.
01:05It looks much drier here later this week,
01:08although it will take many days before the water levels drop back to normal.
01:12Four, showers on Friday.
01:14The weather will be changing by the end of this week,
01:17with an increasing chance of seeing showers as low pressure replaces the high.
01:22In the south, some heavy downpours are likely,
01:24especially at the weekend, where we could even see some thunderstorms.
01:27Five, it's the equinox.
01:29As well as some heavy showers this weekend,
01:31we will see the equinox on Sunday at 1.43pm in the afternoon.
01:37To be precise, it means that astronomically we'll be now in autumn.
01:41For us weather folk, of course, autumn started on the 1st of September.
