Week ahead - Will we see a return of summer?
Met Office

This week brings more showers initially. Later on in the week warmer air could be drawn up from the south allowing temperatures to rise, but there is much uncertainty about how long any warm spell will last.

Welcome to a look at the weather for
00:01
the week ahead from the Met Office.
00:03
Something of a north-south split
00:05
with the weather this week.
00:06
And yes, there are signs of
00:08
something resembling summer
00:10
returning to the south as
00:11
temperatures start to rise,
00:12
particularly later in the week.
00:14
Whereas further north, it's often
00:16
going to be quite breezy this week
00:18
with further showers to come.
00:20
This kind of tells the story.
00:21
The pressure pattern for the next
00:22
five days, high pressure,
00:24
the dominant feature across the
00:25
south, low pressure,
00:27
the dominant feature across the
00:29
north with weather fronts swinging
00:30
by, bringing bands of showers and
00:32
the ice bars often squeezing
00:34
together as well, telling us
00:35
it's often going to be quite
00:37
gusty.
00:37
So, yes, it is a bit of a
00:39
north-south split.
00:40
But in the south, we could see some
00:41
warmer weather.
00:42
Question marks come the weekend
00:44
about when this weather front
00:45
swings through and whether it
00:47
gets rid of any warmer weather
00:48
across the south.
00:49
But that's all to come.
00:51
Let's rewind and go back
00:53
and break down the days day by
00:54
day. Looking at Tuesday, first
00:56
of all, we've got a couple of
00:57
weather fronts bringing thicker
00:59
cloud initially over southwest
01:00
Scotland, northwest England with
01:02
some showers.
01:03
They'll move into northeast
01:04
England and across central and
01:05
southern Scotland.
01:06
Next, weather fronts introducing
01:08
more cloud to Wales and southwest
01:09
England after a bright start and
01:11
also clouding over in Northern
01:12
Ireland with some showers here.
01:14
In between, though, we should see
01:15
some sunshine on Tuesday and the
01:17
winds will be a bit lighter than
01:18
Monday's values.
01:19
So in that sunshine, feeling
01:21
pleasant enough, temperatures
01:22
again in the high teens or maybe
01:24
low 20s.
01:26
Now, as you move through Tuesday
01:27
night and into Wednesday, high
01:29
pressure continues to dominate
01:30
across the south.
01:31
But we are focusing in again on
01:33
low pressure further north and
01:34
this weather front in particular.
01:35
That's going to bring a band of
01:37
wet weather into the northwest
01:39
as the day goes on and the ice
01:40
above squeezing together.
01:41
So the winds will be picking up
01:43
as well.
01:44
Initially, though, it's a case of
01:46
dodging the showers over Wales,
01:48
northern England and Scotland.
01:49
Some of them could be heavy and
01:50
then they're kind of joined by
01:52
this band of wet and windy weather
01:53
swinging in.
01:54
Notice, though, across the south,
01:56
not too many showers here and
01:58
with a bit of brightness,
01:59
temperatures could again get into
02:00
the low 20s, whereas it will be
02:01
feeling quite a bit cooler as
02:03
that wet and windy weather sweeps
02:05
into the northwest.
02:07
This weather front then continues
02:08
to head its way across the
02:09
country, but it will be fizzling
02:11
out as it bumps up against that
02:12
area of high pressure by the time
02:14
we get to Thursday.
02:16
There are more weather fronts
02:17
waiting to push in and notice the
02:19
ice bars still fairly close
02:20
together. So it's going to be
02:21
blustery in the northwest on
02:23
Thursday with further showers
02:25
perhaps turning into more
02:26
persistent rain as those weather
02:28
fronts head in.
02:29
For England, Wales and parts of
02:31
southern Scotland, it's a case
02:33
again of dodging a few showers,
02:35
but much of the day will be dry
02:37
and there'll be a fair bit of cloud
02:38
around, but we should see some
02:39
sunshine across the east and the
02:40
south at times, lifting the
02:42
temperatures again into the low
02:44
20s. So again, quite a contrast
02:45
between northwest and southeast,
02:47
which will persist on Friday.
02:48
Chance of a bit of mist and low
02:49
cloud along the south coast
02:51
through Thursday and Friday.
02:53
One or two showers dotted around,
02:55
but the more persistent rain
02:57
is gathering once
02:59
more in the northwest.
02:59
That's that cold front we saw
03:01
earlier on, and it does bring
03:03
some question marks as we go into
03:04
the weekend. High pressure is still
03:06
the dominant feature.
03:07
And as it shifts into Europe,
03:09
well, it actually lifts
03:11
southerly winds across the UK.
03:13
So we will start to see the
03:15
temperatures rising mid 20s
03:17
by Friday, possibly a bit
03:19
higher in some spots on Saturday,
03:21
but there is uncertainty about the
03:22
timing of that weather front.
03:24
At the moment, the weekend bank
03:26
holiday for many could
03:28
be starting warm, but there'll
03:30
be wet weather from that weather
03:31
front probably pushing into the
03:33
northwest and uncertainty about
03:34
whether that weather front sweeps
03:35
through and takes the warm weather
03:37
away with it.
03:38
So there's quite a bit of uncertainty
03:39
after Saturday.
03:40
Nothing unusual about having
03:42
uncertainty this far ahead.
03:44
The message at the moment, if you've
03:46
got plans for the weekend, is to
03:47
stay tuned to the updates.
