Queensland Premier Steven Miles promises free school lunches if Labor wins state election

Queensland Premier Steven Miles has addressed the party faithful at Labor's state election campaign launch, promising to roll out free lunches for school students.

00:07school student in Queensland if Labor wins the October 26th election.

00:11The Premier unveiled the commitment while addressing the party faithful that Labor's

00:15campaign launched at North Lakes, north of Brisbane.

00:17Labor says the free lunches would kick off from 2025 and cost $1.4 billion over the next

00:23four years.

00:24Mr Miles says consultation will be done with dieticians and nutritionists to determine

00:29what will be included in these lunches.

00:31The meals would be available to the more than 300,000 Queensland state school students who

00:36are in prep through to year six.

00:38Labor estimates the move would save parents $1,600 per child per year.

00:43This is a policy that will be good for kids, good for teachers and good for parents too.

00:50And it's universal.

00:51To avoid stigmatising the kids that need the food the most.

00:56And also to ensure that it supports every Queensland family too.

01:01Former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie was among the Labor figures who attended today's

01:05campaign launch.

01:06But Mr Miles' predecessor Anastasia Palaszczuk was a no-show.

01:10The launch comes ahead of early voting commencing from tomorrow.

01:14Early voting centres will be open between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday in the two weeks

01:19leading up to the October 26th polling day.
