00:00Come with us as we climb up Grey's Monument in the heart of Newcastle.
00:05Anyone wanting to head up the iconic monument needs to start by squeezing through this door
00:08and heading up the stairs, so while we do, let's tell you a little bit about this amazing
00:12place.
00:13Built in 1838, the site is nearly 200 years old and is a Grade I listed monument to commemorate
00:18Charles Grey, Great Britain's Prime Minister between 1830 and 1834.
00:23The monument is a single pillar with 164 very steep steps to reach the top.
00:29However, once you're there you can get stunning views of Granger Street and Grey Street to
00:33the south, as well as St James' Park and the Civic Centre beyond to the north.
00:40This was the final day the monument was opened in 2024 due to unpredictable weather over
00:43the winter months, but it will reopen for visitors in the new year.
