Blaenau Gwent Council fear they may miss recycling targets

A council in South Wales have revealed they do not believe they will meet Welsh government recycling targets and expect a fine to follow. Blaenau Gwent council have hit targets previously, but now fear they sit well below the 70 percent target expected of all Welsh councils.

00:00The Welsh Government have been all in on recycling for a number of years now.

00:05Wales sits second in the world in terms of recycling rates, and there is hope that we

00:09could soon take over the top spot.

00:11But that will only come with the help of local authorities all across the country hitting

00:16hefty targets set by the Welsh Government.

00:19Most councils make the 70% mark, but some are set to miss those targets and with it,

00:24could face a fine.

00:25Bly and Gwent are one of those councils.

00:27They've previously met the threshold and avoided fines, but could now face millions

00:31in penalties if they don't see a drastic upturn in recycling rates around the county

00:35area.

00:36Fines are expected to be somewhere in the region of £200 for every tonne under the

00:4070% target, which could reach thousands and even millions depending on how much they miss

00:45them by.

00:46One councillor said it was only right that they announce they expect to miss the mark,

00:49especially as they say given recycling rates traditionally drop over the winter months,

00:54and they say they are already drafting their plans for next year's recycling plan to

00:58get ahead on targets.
