00:00The remnants of Hurricane Kirk have been felt in parts of Portugal and Spain.

00:05In Portugal around 300,000 households were left without power.

00:09Now France is on high alert.

00:12Strong winds and heavy rains have already flooded homes and made roads impassable.

00:17And more is on the way.

00:19France's Manche region is one area which has already suffered the consequences.

00:24This resident was taken by surprise at how quickly the flooding happened.

00:30I didn't have time. The river came up. It came up, it came up.

00:35I turned my head and it came here, just like that.

00:3830 of France's departments are on an orange weather alert.

00:42Preparations are underway in the Vendée on France's west coast to prevent flooding.

00:47Our dikes have been reinforced and raised, so now all we have to do is wait,

00:51although we're always worried, ready to pounce with the technical staff.

00:55Storm Kirk was a Category 4 hurricane at its peak in the mid-Atlantic.

00:59Cooler waters have since transformed it into an extra-tropical storm.
