00:00French truck drivers are blocking a main motorway in Alsace in protest against the potential

00:06introduction of a heavy goods vehicles tax from 2027.

00:11The new tax, which comes at a cost of 15 cents per kilometre, aims to reduce transit traffic

00:17on the A35 motorway, which sees up to 10,000 trucks pass along it each day.

00:24Many of these lorries use the Alsace motorway to avoid paying the high eco-taxes already

00:29in place on German motorways.

00:33Those working in the transit industry say the addition of this new tax would threaten

00:38the survival of some businesses.

00:40There is a very low margin. So as soon as there is a tax, as soon as there is a tax

00:47that arrives or is supposed to arrive, it impacts us directly because we have absolutely

00:53no margin of manoeuvre.

00:54Local councillors are set to vote on the proposal on the 21st of October.
