00:00There are thousands of people here today calling for an end to the violence in the Middle East,
00:08particularly in Gaza. Many of these people march every Sunday, but today is the 52nd.
00:14It marks one year of war in Gaza and tens of thousands of lives lost. Of course, tomorrow
00:20is October 7. It is the anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel, where 1,200
00:27people died. What then followed was the Israeli incursion into Gaza, which has cost 41,000
00:33lives, including up to 16,000 children. And that is what these paper kites here behind
00:40me represent. There's one paper kite for each child's life that has been lost. Many of them
00:46are labelled. There is a lot of sadness here today because there are a lot of relatives
00:51of those people who have lost their lives or been injured. Almost 100,000 people have
00:56been injured in Gaza. But there is also a lot of anger as people call for an end to
01:02the violence. Take a listen to what some of the organisers had to say earlier.
01:07It's an unnecessary distraction, of course. But I think if you spoke to the everyday Australian
01:11and said to them, you know, what about these Hezbollah flags? Most of them wouldn't know
01:15what a Hezbollah flag is. Most of them would say, why are kids getting slaughtered? How
01:20is this self-defence?
01:22There's also an enormous police presence here at the rally as they keep an eye out for flags
01:28that may portray illegal terrorist symbols. There are mostly here now just Palestinian
01:34flags and symbols of peace as people here call for an end to the violence and for an
01:40end to the loss of life.
