00:00At Hobart's Macquarie Wharf, the RSV Nuyina is being loaded up as it prepares to make
00:08the long journey south.
00:10We're all very excited to be underway and we've been chatting to the team that's
00:15down at Davis Station, they've been there for 12 months now, and they're pretty
00:19excited for us to turn up.
00:21The ship will travel almost 5,000 kilometres, bringing with it critical supplies and special
00:27treats for those spending the coming months on the icy continent.
00:31Yeah, we've definitely got a large quantity of ice cream, chocolate, coffee and of course
00:38the all essential toilet paper.
00:40There'll be 100 expeditioners on board, including scientists involved in cleaning
00:46up legacy waste at Australia's Antarctic bases, and seabird ecologists keeping watch
00:51for the spread of avian influenza.
00:55What you'll see heading off next week is the culmination of, in some cases, years
00:59of preparation, not only in terms of developing research programs, but also building really
01:05important national and international collaborations between research agencies.
01:11There'll also be a team of tradies heading down to Davis to conduct annual maintenance
01:16and work on a new desalination plant.
01:20Davis Station doesn't have a fresh water source, so we need to produce fresh water
01:23using salt water via a desalination plant, and then store that water for most of the
01:28year actually.
01:29The trip to Davis is expected to take six weeks to complete.
01:34It's the first of four voyages planned for the Nor'ena this Antarctic season, including
01:39the ship's first ever marine science voyage to the Denman Glacier in February next year.
