Royal Australian Mint releases three new coins

The countdown is over for hundreds of avid coin enthusiasts who spend last night camped outside the royal Australian Mint in the nation’s capital. Many travelled from interstate hoping to get their hands on an eagerly anticipated collectable.

00:08Hundreds of coin enthusiasts endured the cold and less than comfortable conditions to secure

00:14some new prized possessions.

00:16We left the blanket at home and we had to buy one off Marketplace to keep the missus

00:19happy so we ended up paying an extra $20 to get it delivered.

00:23It wasn't too bad, the other winter night was cold, I ended up getting cold about one

00:27o'clock in the morning.

00:28The countdown was on for the release of one of the most colourful novelty coins in the

00:33Mint's history, celebrating 50 years since the ABC's much-loved music television show

00:40hit the airwaves.

00:46As well as two $2 coins commemorating animals that have served in war.

00:51I think that one of the important missions we have here at the Mint is clearly to create

00:56public value and some of the public value we create is the stories that we tell on

01:00coins.

01:01With only 7,500 made, the most anticipated of the new releases was the silver-proof coin,

01:08drawing enthusiasts from across the country.

01:11It's a very collectible coin, it's very valuable.

01:14We came all the way from Queensland, so a 13 hour drive.

01:18It's not just these colourful designs that appeal to collectors, many are anticipating

01:23they'll appreciate over time and are already seeking to have them valued before they end

01:28up on reselling sites.
