00:04Let's get an update from Rod Laguzan.

00:09The Taal Volcano erupted at 4 p.m. earlier this afternoon.

00:17Based on the initial forecast by PBOX, the eruption happened around 4 p.m.

00:22The eruption was a phreatomagmatic eruption.

00:26According to PBOX, the eruption was very violent.

00:29This is because the magma is in contact with the water.

00:32According to this, we are able to interview PBOX Director Teresito Bacolcol,

00:37who is currently working here in Handa, Philippines

00:40in the Department of Science and Technology here in General Santos City.

00:44Director, can you explain to the public what happened to the eruption?

00:49What is a phreatomagmatic eruption?

00:51Okay, so a phreatomagmatic eruption is magma coming into contact with water,

00:55producing steam, and sometimes it has volcanic ash.

01:00Earlier, the Taal Volcano erupted at 4 p.m.

01:06The plume reached 2,400 meters and dispersed towards the northeast.

01:15Right now, the Taal Volcano is silent.

01:19Again, the eruption only lasted for 11 minutes.

01:23Director, for comparison, one of the things the public remembers is the Taal Volcano eruption

01:28before the pandemic in January 2020.

01:31Is the eruption stronger than the Taal Volcano or is it stronger?

01:36The 2020 eruption is stronger because it was a phreatomagmatic eruption.

01:41This one is a phreatomagmatic eruption and basically,

01:44this is just again water coming into contact with magma.

01:50Director, you mentioned that the eruption will end, but based on the pictures and videos

01:55that you uploaded to social media, people were able to get near the Taal Volcano.

01:59Are we expecting an ashfall?

02:02Well, we expect that the plume will be too high, 2,400 meters, and voluminous.

02:08So we would expect an ashfall, but as of now,

02:13we have not yet received a report that there are towns that were hit by ash.

02:18Director, the eruption happened under the alert level 1 of the volcano.

02:24Does it mean that we will raise the alert level of the volcano or is this a sign of a stronger eruption?

02:31For now, we will maintain the alert level 1.

02:35We have not yet recorded any volcanic earthquakes.

02:38This is one of our reminders that the volcano has become more restive.

02:44So for the past 12 hours, meaning 12 midnight earlier, 12 noon earlier,

02:51we have not yet recorded any volcanic earthquakes.

02:53For the past few days, our volcanic earthquakes are almost at the background level.

02:58Director, just for the information of the public,

03:00so even if a volcano is alert level 1, like the Taal Volcano,

03:04it could happen at any given time?

03:06That's right. Even at alert level 0, there could be a phreatomagmatic or phreatic eruption.

03:12So our countrymen should be reminded not to go to the Taal Volcano Island

03:17because at any time, there could be an eruption, a phreatomagmatic or phreatic eruption.

03:22Director, just for the information of the public, now that the eruption is over, what to expect?

03:27Should we be more alert? Activity is low, but the possibility is high?

04:09Again, we are reminding our countrymen to be vigilant.

04:13Again, the Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire

04:16and every now and then, we may experience volcanic eruptions like what happened earlier or paglindol.

04:21So we really have to prepare.

04:23When we say preparedness, it's not just the business of our office,

04:28it's not just the business of OFIVO, it's everyone's collective duty to prepare.

04:31Lastly, should people wear masks?

04:35If there is volcanic ash, if they feel that there is ash, they should wear face masks.

04:48Days prior to this phreatic explosion, were there any signs that this will happen, Rod?

04:58Director Bacolkol will answer.

05:00Well, we have phreatic eruptions.

05:03In fact, yesterday, we issued an advisory saying that in a day, we will have phreatic eruptions,

05:11five phreatic eruptions.

05:12That's the reason why we're telling, informing the public to be vigilant.

05:34Well, it's really prohibited to go to Taal Volcano Island.

05:38That's a permanent danger zone.

05:40So for now, that's the only thing we're recommending,

05:42that they should not go inside the permanent danger zone, which is Taal Volcano Island.

05:56Well, we will assess this on a day-to-day basis.

05:59Again, for now, we haven't seen any volcanic earthquakes.
