00:00And from American Family Field, we get ready for Brewers and Mets.
00:09The roof will be closed.
00:10It's going to get hot in here.
00:12National League playoffs getting started right here.
00:15Freddy Peralta gets game number one this year of the postseason.
00:19Last year pitched the decisive game number two against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
00:24Francisco Lindor will lead it off the Mets.
00:27And what has been a whirlwind of a 24 hours for New York.
00:31To two.
00:33And it's in there.
00:34Frozen Francisco Lindor and Peralta off to a good start with a strikeout.
00:39Two strikes and nothing on Iglesias.
00:41Here comes Peralta.
00:42Struck him out looking.
00:43Keeter on the outside corner at 97.
00:46Two away.
00:47Peralta is ready and fires.
00:50And this one popped up.
00:53On the infield Peralta is under it.
00:55He makes the call and he makes the catch.
00:57So the Mets go in order, two via strikeout.
01:00And now Luis Severino will go to the mound for the Mets.
01:05His first time out in a week.
01:06Bryce Terang got a taste of the playoffs last year.
01:09Leading things off against Severino.
01:12And that one hit and it's for Pespientos.
01:15Terang around first, racing for second.
01:18And he's in.
01:19Well this was something that Carlos Mendoza the manager mentioned right away.
01:23Not giving him that extra out, extra base.
01:26Got to defend.
01:27This ball was hit almost like a change up and it fooled Mendoza's hair.
01:31So he kind of slow motion collapsed to his knee and didn't quite get in front of it.
01:35And here comes Jackson Churio, first playoff at bat.
01:38That one towards the hole and it gets through.
01:40Churio with a single.
01:41And now they're runners at the corner.
01:43So it'll go double and then single and the Brewers are immediately in business.
01:49William Contreras, 281 with 23 homers and 92 driven in during the regular season.
01:55Ground ball right side, base hit.
01:57Terang is in.
01:58Churio stops.
02:001-0 Brewers on an RBI single by Contreras.
02:04With Pete Alonzo the first baseman holding on, Jackson Churio opened up the right side
02:09and nobody better this year as a right-handed hitter using the opposite field
02:13than William Contreras.
02:141-0 Milwaukee and now it's Garrett Mitchell.
02:17First off pitch, swung on and missed strike three.
02:20Severino gets him with a sweeper and that's a big first out,
02:24particularly with Churio not running from second.
02:27Still in scoring position.
02:28Contreras at first and Willie Adamas the shortstop will be the better.
02:33That one up and in against ball four and now they're loaded
02:37and Severino is frustrated with Alex Tosi.
02:40Francisco Alvarez calling time and Jeremy Heffner will join the meeting on the mound.
02:46That's a very sticky spot for Severino early in his start.
02:49Jake Bowers the batter with the bases loaded.
02:52This one popped in the air.
02:54Foul and back to the plate.
02:55Alvarez back towards the screen.
02:57Alvarez makes the catch.
02:59And on one pitch Bowers retired and that's a big out.
03:02And here comes Reese Hoskins.
03:04Well this guy somehow finds his way into dramatic situations.
03:08Last Friday night he hit a first inning grand slam.
03:11And would you believe it, here he is again.
03:14And that one got him.
03:15Hoskins applauds and it is two nothing.
03:18Well one thing Severino is struggling a little bit is that inner corner
03:22two right handed batters he's been missing in.
03:24And Hoskins who likes to be on top of that plate is unafraid
03:27just kind of leave that arm out there.
03:29Just a little extra second he tries to pull it in but he also knows that's a run.
03:33Frelick left hand batter.
03:35The 1-0 roll slowly to second.
03:37Up with it Iglesias hustles his throw to first in time to get Frelick's side retired.
03:42But the Brewers score two runs.
03:44And it's Mark Vientos to lead off the second.
03:46The 0-1 hit hard up the middle, a base hit into center field.
03:50So Vientos picks out a fastball and shoots the first Mets hit of the game
03:54into center field.
03:55That gives them the lead off man on here in the second
03:58and will bring up Pete Alonso.
04:01A little bit low, check swing.
04:03Did he go? No swing.
04:04And that's ball four.
04:05And now Peralta in a little bit of trouble.
04:08And the Mets have runners at first and second.
04:10Nobody out with the Brewers leading two to nothing here in the second.
04:14And Jesse Winker coming up.
04:16The Brewer last year got two postseason at-bats.
04:19Payoff pitch.
04:20Swing and a liner to right field, base hit.
04:22It's going to head towards the right field corner.
04:24Vientos turns third, he'll score.
04:26Alonso to third, he's going to be waved in.
04:28The ball slow coming out of the corner.
04:30The cutoff throw is dropped and going all the way to third is Winker.
04:34Two runs score and the Mets have come right back.
04:37And isn't that their mantra?
04:38They've come right back to tie the game two to two.
04:41Jesse Winker is now at third with nobody out.
04:45Jesse gives a look to that third base dugout with his hands to his sides
04:48pushing the air down saying, calm it down, we've got this.
04:52And once again, Jesse Winker wins the one-on-one against Freddie Peralta.
04:56You can make him seven for 19.
04:58Five extra base hits and this a huge triple to bring in too.
05:03And he and Adamas are doing some chirping at each other.
05:05Watch Winker, watch him say something, it looks like.
05:08It looks like right there he barked something at Adamas.
05:11Willie turns his head and then those two continue their chirping.
05:16Here's Marte, right-hand batter.
05:18Line drive, center field, chasing back Mitchell.
05:21Gets turned around, reaches up and he makes the catch.
05:24Winker tags and he'll come in to score.
05:26And just like that, the Mets have the lead.
05:29Here's Terang, doubled and scored.
05:32Line drive, base hit left center.
05:34Terang a big turnaround first, he's digging for two.
05:37Another double for Bryce Terang.
05:39Two out and another RBI guy, William Contreras, the batter.
05:44Fly ball in the air out towards left center field.
05:47Taylor and Nimmo, it'll be Tyrone Taylor to make the catch.
05:50Side retired.
05:51So one-on-one out now for Jake Bowers, bottom three.
05:54Here it comes.
05:56Line drive, base hit out of the right center field.
05:58Mitchell around second, he's racing for third.
06:01And the throw is cut around the corners.
06:03And the Brewers are in business.
06:06And now here's Reese Hoskins.
06:07What a surprise in a big spot.
06:09Hit hard towards short, Lindor's got it.
06:11Flipped to second one on the first double play.
06:15Severino screaming out.
06:17He gets exactly what he needs.
06:19And he gets the Mets out of the third inning.
06:20Freelick grounded out his first time, left-hand hitter.
06:23Three-two.
06:24And a line drive and a base hit out of the right field.
06:26Freelick around first, racing for second.
06:29And Freelick dives in head first, he's got a double.
06:32And a two-two.
06:33Terang, a bouncer on the left side.
06:35Backhanded by Lindor.
06:37He does not have a play.
06:38It's an infield single for Bryce Terang.
06:40And the Brewers have it first and second.
06:42One away.
06:43And the kid, the phenom, the 20-year-old Jackson Churio
06:47strolling to the plate.
06:49Breaking ball, lined into center, down for a base hit.
06:52Freelick being weighed home.
06:53Bottled in center by Taylor.
06:55Freelick will score, we are tied.
06:58No moment too big for young Jackson Churio.
07:02They will credit him with a double,
07:04an RBI double for Jackson Churio.
07:07And now action has begun in that Mets bullpen.
07:10Churio's tied it at three, and the Brewers aren't done yet.
07:13Here's William Contreras.
07:15This place is rocking.
07:16And a chopper on the left side.
07:18Big hop for Lindor.
07:19This will score the run.
07:21He throws to first in time to get Contreras.
07:23But the Brewers have a 4-3 lead.
07:25Matt Murphy going to the pen,
07:26and he's bringing in Yoel Payams.
07:28Brilliant in the last 30 appearances of the season
07:33Yoel Payams, really since August the 2nd,
07:35has only given up two runs in 21 innings.
07:37He's got Starling Marte to lead it off.
07:40Marte, deep drive to the left, back,
07:42Churio at the wall, and he caught it!
07:46Right at the yellow line, Jackson Churio brought it in.
07:50That ball would have cleared everything
07:53if Churio doesn't bring it in.
07:55The Brewers, one of the top teams
07:57in Major League Baseball are Robin Homers,
07:59and Jackson Churio just took one off the board for the Mets.
08:03Now Tyrone Taylor, the batter.
08:06That one lined to left, Churio is there, jumps!
08:09And it's off his glove and then rolls to the wall.
08:12Taylor around second, he'll stop there.
08:14So Churio not able to make the play that time.
08:18And now it's Jose Iglesias,
08:20a very pesky hitter to say the least.
08:22Pitch, ground ball to first, Hoskins with a dive!
08:25Payams covering a race to the bag!
08:28Safe is the call!
08:29And now all the way around to score is Taylor!
08:32He puts his head down the most and runs the hardest,
08:34despite how hard he hit the ball, Jose Iglesias.
08:38This is a ball that Hoskins thinks,
08:39I'm gonna get, flip to my pitcher, he hits a high flip,
08:42and Iglesias dives head first into the bag
08:45before the throw hits the pitcher
08:47and the pitcher hits the bag.
08:49That is all on Iglesias' hustle right there.
08:51And you all, Payams is coming out of this ballgame.
08:53Aaron Ashby is in the ballgame.
08:55Brings up Brandon Nimmo in a lefty-lefty matchup.
08:59And that one on the ground, Adamas sliding play,
09:02scores out of his glove, everybody's safe,
09:05and it'll be an infield single.
09:07This has been an elusive third out
09:09for the Brewers pitching staff.
09:10Pientos, a single and a walk.
09:13Bases loaded, two out on the fifth, first pitch,
09:15line the other way, base hit right field!
09:17Lindor is in, Iglesias being waved in.
09:20Frelick's throw to the plate, not in time!
09:22Sliding in safely is Iglesias, 5-3 New York,
09:26two-run single, his second hit of the game.
09:29Incredible what he's done in his first breakout season
09:31in the major leagues.
09:33So the Mets put up three here in the top half
09:35and they may not be done yet.
09:37The Brewers are gonna intentionally walk Alonzo
09:39to load him up and Jesse Winker will be called back
09:42as a hitter and J.D. Martinez will bat.
09:45Breaking ball hit on the ground, right side, base hit!
09:47Right field, two-run score, J.D. Martinez
09:51with a two-run single and the Mets have put up a five spot
09:55here in the fifth inning.
09:56They go in front of the Brewers, 8-4.
09:59Well, the third pitcher of the inning
10:01coming in from Milwaukee, it's Nick Mears.
10:03The Mets about ready to send their 11th batter
10:07of the inning to the plate.
10:08Tyrone Taylor, who started this whole thing off
10:10with a double, and he laces one to center field.
10:14Coming on is Mitchell and he makes the catch.
10:17But did the Mets ever do some damage?
10:20And here's Bryce Turang, two doubles and a single today,
10:23all to the opposite field.
10:25A one-one, lifted in the air to left field.
10:27Nimmo back a few steps, is there,
10:29makes the one-hand catch, side retired.
10:32Severino is now retired eight in a row.
10:34Bottom of the eighth inning and the Brewers down by four.
10:37Butoh starting his second inning of work.
10:39Butoh deals, in there, strike three called.
10:43Butoh has his second strikeout.
10:45Two up, two down.
10:46You know, the Brewers' last base runner
10:48was Churio's RBI double in the fourth inning.
10:50Thirteen Brewers in a row have gone down.
10:53Swing and a miss struck him out.
10:55Butoh overwhelms the Brewers.
10:58Three strikeouts for Butoh, side retired.
11:01In a non-save situation with the Mets up eight to four,
11:04Ryan Stanek will come on to pitch
11:06the bottom of the ninth inning.
11:09Ortiz pops this one up.
11:11Stanek racing over there, called off by the Polar Bear.
11:15And Pete Alonzo makes the catch.
11:17And the Mets are one out away from securing game one.
11:21It's Bryce Turang.
11:24And here's the one-two to Turang.
11:25Swung on and missed strike three.
11:27Got him with a split, put it in the books.
11:29The New York Mets have come into Milwaukee
11:31and taken the opener of this best of three wild card series.
11:36They fell behind early, but in 2024 Mets fashion,
11:40they didn't just come back, they came right back.
11:44Fell behind again, came right back once more,
11:47and the Mets are in the driver's seat here in Milwaukee.
11:51Final score, the New York Mets eight,
11:53the Milwaukee Brewers four.
