00:00First bit of news is Chris Sales being scratched with back spasms. Last night after the game he'd been throwing all week just to keep his arm going, went out to throw or went to the cages to throw, came in after and told us that his back was tight. So around noon today I came into the office and the more we talked about it the right thing is to not, you know, it's not an IL, it's a day-to-day thing, but it's not an IL.
00:29But again, if we could have him pitch and it was safe, we would do that, but regardless to where we want to go, we need him, you know, we need him going forward. So Grant Holmes will start today's game.
00:42As we just heard from Alex Anthopoulos a few minutes ago, Grant Holmes did not find out he was starting this game until Rick Kranditz told him when he walked off the field following game one. He said no problem, he wants this opportunity.
00:54It's very simple. The Braves win, they are in, they are headed to San Diego to take on the Padres starting tomorrow. They lose and the season is over right here today. Swing and a miss, but a good start for Grant Holmes.
01:06And it is not starting Marte hitting second in the order, it's Jose Iglesias who pops one up. So the Mets apparently changed their lineup at the last moment and Iglesias is retired.
01:18So an 0-2 count, if he can get a strikeout right here, that would be a nine-pitch first inning for Grant Holmes. That would be a great start.
01:23But he is going down swinging. 1-2-3 for Grant Holmes.
01:28Didn't know what the Mets would do if they won game one, they didn't make any announcement. We found out ten minutes ago that the pitcher is going to be a guy they called up today. This is Joey Lucchese. It's only his second outing of the year at the big league level.
01:39Yeah, and it didn't go that well for him. He ended up giving up a home run in four and a third and struggled in that one.
01:45Swing and a ground ball up the middle, Acuna diving to his left, has it from the outfield grasp, throws to first, a stretch by Alonzo, he's out!
01:52Ronald's little brother doing Ronald-type things, but on the infield here at Truist Park.
01:57Ball four and Ozuda's on with the two-out walk.
02:00And now Matt Olson, one for five in game one for Matt today.
02:04In there, strike three called, he got him with a fastball, side retired.
02:08Neither team had anything going offensively in the first inning, we head to the top of the second, it'll be Alonzo, Marte, and Taylor for the Mets.
02:14And he gets Alonzo swinging in another sharp slider.
02:17So now four batters face for Grant Holmes, three strikeouts.
02:20Three punchouts, three different ways.
02:22A lunge and a miss at strike three, but that's a good slider that Grant Holmes has.
02:26Strikes out Starling Marte, that's four strikeouts by Grant Holmes.
02:30Pop up towards right center field, Harris and Soler coming together, that's Michael's ball.
02:35Grant Holmes nails through two innings.
02:37Soler will lead off the bottom of the second inning.
02:40And the payoff pitch from the southpaw is hit to right field and pretty deep.
02:44It's still going.
02:46Off the top of the wall.
02:48Look how far that bounces away from Taylor.
02:51But Soler made a big turn at second.
02:54But is able to scramble back with a double.
02:56And a wise choice and a big smile there from Jorge Soler as he comes up big here.
03:01And to kick things off, when you see this pitch, outer half, two-seam fastball,
03:0591 miles an hour, just a little bit of run.
03:07And he goes out and gets it.
03:08And my goodness, what he missed that by, less than a foot?
03:10That one gets by Terrence.
03:12So Soler will try to get to third.
03:14And he does slide in safely.
03:16But look at Iglesias hobbling.
03:17And that's just the kind of thing that we were talking about that the Mets are hoping to avoid.
03:21Just his kind of elbow, body.
03:24Soler is a huge man.
03:26He's going to shake it off and stay in there.
03:29That will be a wild pitch charge to Luke Casey.
03:31Got to catch his run in.
03:33Out to left center.
03:34That ball will drop.
03:36It's an RBI hit for Gio Urshela.
03:39And the Braves draw first blood, 1-0.
03:42Any way that you can get them, you will take them after the big double.
03:45And then the wild pitch, a little weak contact here on what was a pretty good pitch inside to Urshela.
03:51So Jorge Soler easily scores.
03:53That wild pitch doesn't happen.
03:54He's standing at third base because he can't take off.
03:56Desperately needed the early lead.
03:58And Grant Holmes, C.J., he's looked great through two innings.
04:01Really sharp.
04:02No hits so far.
04:03The breaking pitches have looked good.
04:05He's been aggressive.
04:06He's been in the zone.
04:07Another strikeout.
04:08Six through eight hitters for Grant Holmes.
04:11And again to the slider here for Grant Holmes.
04:14Unbelievable.
04:15Get yourself in good counts and throwing those strikeout pitches.
04:18Round ball out to second.
04:20Backhanded by Ozzie.
04:21Smooth play.
04:22Good throw.
04:23Three up, three down.
04:24Three perfect innings for Grant Holmes.
04:25He's definitely pulling his weight.
04:27So away here in the fourth inning, Brandon Nimmo is next.
04:30He's in search of his fourth straight 1-2-3 inning.
04:33Grant Holmes giving the Braves everything he's got.
04:37Another perfect inning for Grant Holmes.
04:39Twelve up and twelve down with seven strikeouts for Grant.
04:43Got to get him some runs.
04:44We go to the bottom of the fourth inning, 1-0 Braves.
04:46So back-to-back walks.
04:48Lucchesi starting to show a bit of fatigue.
04:51The batter will be Sean Murphy.
04:53On this homestand, Murphy had a big home run the other night versus Kansas City.
04:57He had a big base hit right here.
04:59Lucchesi is threatening to walk the bases loaded.
05:02A free pass to Laureano.
05:03Then to Urshela.
05:04Now 3-2 to Sean Murphy.
05:06In the air to deep right field.
05:08Down the line towards the corner.
05:10That's going to be caught deep in the corner by Taylor.
05:13And the runners have to head back to first and second.
05:15Gave it a ride.
05:16Just needed a little bit more.
05:17That is a nice play by Taylor in the corner.
05:19So it's up to Arcia.
05:21Runners at first and second.
05:22Two down.
05:23Well, let's see what Orlando Arcia can do.
05:25Ground ball to the right side.
05:27Acuna comes up with it on the second bounce.
05:29Tosses to first.
05:30And the Braves strand two men aboard.
05:32So Lucchesi was wild.
05:34But the two walks don't harm him.
05:36And Brian Snitger is going to come and get Grant Holmes.
05:39He pitched four great innings.
05:40Single and a walk here in the fifth.
05:42Filling in like he did for Chris Sayle.
05:45You'll get a hand and a big high-five from all of his teammates.
05:48And now it's on to Dayspell Hernandez.
05:51We saw him yesterday.
05:52He was very good.
05:53As he went an inning and two thirds with five strikeouts.
05:56Check swing.
05:57He went.
05:58Taylor knew it.
05:59He spins around and goes back to the dugout.
06:00Good job by Dayspell Hernandez.
06:02Come out of the bullpen.
06:04Get that first out.
06:05Harrison Bader fanned his first time.
06:07Got him looking.
06:08Froze him.
06:09I don't know what Bader was looking for.
06:10But he didn't even get the bat off his shoulder.
06:12Luis Torrens, the catcher, fanned his first time.
06:15And now Torrens grounds to third.
06:17Urshela's got it.
06:18Steps on the bag.
06:19Dayspell Hernandez.
06:21Job done out of the pen to keep it one to nothing.
06:23With a tying run 90 feet away.
06:25The last time Dylan Lee allowed an inherited runner to score.
06:29He has to go back to May 4th.
06:30He's got to face Pete Alonso.
06:32Grounded to third.
06:33Urshela picks it off the short hop.
06:35And the Mets remain scoreless.
06:380-2 on the runner at third.
06:39Here's Gio Urshela who's blooped single in the second.
06:42Drove in the only run of this game.
06:43Fly ball left field.
06:45Dembo got a late start coming in.
06:47But he's there.
06:48And that retires the side.
06:50A double and one left.
06:51Joey Bukasi giving the Mets what they needed.
06:53Six solid innings.
06:55And on to pitch.
06:56Desperate times, you know.
06:57Ronaldo Lopez will work in the seventh.
07:00His first relief appearance of the year.
07:02This is his throw day.
07:04But now he's in the game.
07:05And he'll face 5, 6, and 7.
07:08And he comes out here on short rest and strikes out Bartek.
07:12Lopez cuts it loose.
07:13And got his man.
07:14A lunge and a slider by Taylor.
07:172 away here in the seventh.
07:18Flair.
07:19Shallow center.
07:20Harris trotting in.
07:21He's got it.
07:22Down they go.
07:231, 2, 3.
07:24Reynaldo Lopez with a solid seventh.
07:26Trying to do his part to get the Braves to San Diego.
07:29Just any insurance.
07:30Any breathing room right now would certainly be welcome.
07:33A one softly tapped on the grass.
07:35Going to be a tough play.
07:36Brazoban fields.
07:37Throws it away.
07:38Down the right field line.
07:39Over to third base now.
07:41Is Sean Murphy.
07:42He'll hold.
07:43The throw by Brazoban.
07:44You knew it was going to be an adventure.
07:46He's had a hard time just throwing to the plate.
07:48So pressure to deliver a good throw to first from the third base side of the mound
07:52was too big a challenge for him.
07:53And now Garcia, or rather at all bases I should say,
07:56is at second with Murphy at third.
07:58So now let's get Marcel out of this little dip he's in.
08:03The Braves are due.
08:041 for 8 in this game with runners in scoring position.
08:07And he lashes one into left field.
08:09A base hit.
08:10That will drive in two runs.
08:12Ozuda busts out of the big way.
08:15Much needed insurance.
08:17Hits three to nothing.
08:18And why not the guy that has been doing it all season long,
08:21the most consistent hitter in this lineup since opening day
08:25is Marcel Ozuda who creates the space that we have been looking for
08:29all afternoon after the error.
08:32Two RBI base hit to give the Braves a three-run lead.
08:35RBI 103 and 104 for him this year.
08:38And none more important for Ozuda.
08:41Braves country take a little exhale for the moment.
08:44That's trouble.
08:45It's going to roll to the wall.
08:48Ozuda heads to third.
08:50He'll stop there.
08:51Coming into second.
08:52And Olsen is tagged out.
08:54A tremendous throw by Tyrone Taylor to Eddie Alvarez.
08:59And they get Olsen at second base.
09:02The Braves do get two, which they badly needed,
09:05but they will not get any more.
09:07Three to nothing with three outs to get for the Braves.
09:11The Braves three outs from a flight to San Diego.
09:13And Iglesias a chance at redemption after struggling
09:16in game one of the doubleheader.
09:18Once again, just like earlier today, we have Iglesias versus Iglesias.
09:23Grounded toward the hole.
09:24Backhand play by Arcia, but no chance to get Iglesias.
09:28And he keeps that hitting streak alive.
09:3022 straight games.
09:32A leadoff single of the night.
09:33What a story he's been.
09:35The Mets have life in the ninth.
09:37And now Brandon Nimmo who took Iglesias deep in the first game
09:40of the doubleheader.
09:41Had a base hit his last time up in this game.
09:43Well, here's the 0-2.
09:44Ground ball right side.
09:45Ozzie has it to second.
09:47There's one.
09:48Arcia to first.
09:49There is two.
09:52Huge double play to wipe the bags clean.
09:54And the Braves are one out away.
09:56The Braves are one out away for the postseason.
09:59And the batter is Pete Alonso.
10:00Grounded to short.
10:02Arcia's got it.
10:04They get it.
10:06Despite all the adversity.
10:08Despite all the twists and turns.
10:10The Braves battle their way back into the playoffs for a seventh straight season.
10:15It was do or die in game 162.
10:18And the Braves said, we're not dying today.
10:21And for the seventh year in a row, the Braves are going to the postseason.
