00:00Let's talk about your American Idol journey and we all know that you did not come out as the

00:06big winner but over the years you have proven that you actually are a winner. How has it affected you?

00:13I think it it gave me the confidence that I needed. I was not a very confident person and

00:19seriously I had to go through I had to go through all of that to realize

00:25oh maybe I can do this and maybe maybe I the work I put into what I do can bring

00:33make me feel good and fulfilled and make other people feel good.

00:37So it helped me realize that I if I keep working hard even when I feel like I want to give up

00:43if I keep going I can see amazing things happen because a lot of times on that show I wanted to

00:49give up. I wanted to give up every week there was one week where I was like I want to run away and

00:54hide because this is way too much this is way more than I thought I this is more than I can

00:59handle this is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. I didn't realize a singing competition

01:04I thought you just come and sing a song it was so much more than that and I was just like

01:08I can't handle this but I kept pushing myself. I had support from my family from my friends and

01:15from the other contestants and I was like you know what I may want to give up but let's see if

01:20I can last one more week and I kept laughing one more week up until the very end. So I just applied

01:26that even after the show it's like I don't think I can do this but let me see if I can just do one

01:31more show or one more song release one more album and I just kept going since then and now I'm just

01:37like I want to keep going I want to keep giving my best I feel like my best is yet to come.

01:43I feel like I'm just getting into my groove even though I'm like 16 years into my career

01:47I'm just getting into my groove so I'm like okay let's just keep working I'm applying the work

01:52ethic I've learned over the last 16 years. And recently you had a guesting with American Idol

02:00and it was very emotional for you how how was that for you because you know it was oh when we

02:06were watching it it was like very emotional for the audience too. Yeah it was my first time

02:14going back on American Idol performing as an out queer person. As yourself. As myself yeah

02:23it was scary I was just like I know this audience is more conservative and I know a lot of people

02:30watching the show do not understand LGBTQ plus people and they think it's like they have all

02:37these ideas so I was very scared to to appear as myself but at the same time I was like you know

02:43what but this is this has always been me so I'd rather them get to know the the real me rather

02:51than still love this idea of what they think David is because I thought that's what I was supposed to

02:57be for everybody and it felt amazing it just felt like freedom.
