00:00Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has been walking a tightrope on the topic of immigration,

00:06trying to both project a tougher stance on illegal immigration, but also to appeal to

00:11voters that seek relief for unauthorized migrants who live in the United States.

00:17Let me be clear.

00:19I reject the false choice.

00:20I reject the false choice that suggests we must either choose between securing our border

00:28or creating a system of immigration that is safe, orderly, and humane.

00:34We can and we must do both.

00:37President Joe Biden in June issued an executive order allowing border officials to remove

00:42migrants entering the U.S. without processing their asylum requests when a daily quota has

00:48been met.

00:49Harris said she'd go even further, making it harder to lift these border restrictions.

00:55Her new push to restrict asylum reflects her desire to narrow rival Donald Trump's

01:00lead among voters on immigration.

01:04At his campaign stops outside Detroit, Trump stepped up his racially charged rhetoric about

01:09an invasion of illegal immigrants.

01:12He blamed Harris for supposedly allowing murderers, rapists, and mentally ill people to flood

01:17the country.

01:18Blood is on her hands at a level that probably nobody's ever seen in this country before.

01:25We will close the border.

01:26We will stop the invasion.

01:28We will begin the largest deportation operation in American history.

01:33And we have no choice but to do that.

01:37Early this year, Harris supported a bipartisan border deal that would have hired 1,500 more

01:43agents and officers.

01:45Trump worked publicly to scuttle the deal, which Democrats say was a cynical ploy to

01:50stymie solutions so that he could keep immigration issues at the center of his presidential campaign.
