00:00Now the Dodgers were a road favorite yesterday in Miami, so beating the

00:07Marlins 20-4 isn't all that crazy, even with 20 runs. But you might be

00:13thinking to yourself, how did they get to 20 in a baseball game? His name is

00:18Shohei Ohtani, who made Major League Baseball history in more ways than one

00:22last night in Miami. Let's talk about the game itself first. Six hits in six at

00:30bats, three home runs, ten RBIs. He scored four runs and he stole two bases. Again,

00:38Joe, I said this at the start of the show, but it bears repeating because it was a

00:43historic performance. Since the RBI became an official stat back in 1920,

00:48over a century ago in America's pastime, only one Major League Baseball player

00:52over the course of his career has totaled up a game of all of these

00:57requirements. Ten or more RBIs once in his career, six or more hits once in his

01:03career, five or more extra base hits once in his career, three or more home runs

01:07once in his career, at least two stolen bases once in his career. A game to

01:12solidify all of those positions just at one time throughout what could be a 12,

01:1714, 16 year Major League Baseball career. Shohei Ohtani did it all in his

01:22career in one single game last night in South Florida. And oh, by the way, the

01:28three home runs gives him 51 this season. The two stolen bags gives him 51 so far

01:35this season. He became also the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home

01:40runs and steal 50 bases in the same season. We have said it before, we will

01:46say it again, a unicorn on the diamond and the greatest to ever do it. I mean,

01:51there are just so many things that, in the way to do it, to create his own club,

01:57the 50-50 club, Ben, in that way is just the thing that legends are made of here.

02:04And I can't help but to wonder if any of this happens if he's a pitcher this year.

02:10And I think it's a fair question because if this is what he is capable

02:15of, just being an everyday hitter, an everyday player DH, why in the world would I want him to

02:23do? I don't want you to pitch. What good would he have done the Dodgers pitching this year if he

02:29didn't? And oh yeah, by the way, maybe the greatest thing of all of this is that we finally

02:34get to see him in October, don't we? Yes, we do finally get to see him in October. The Dodgers

02:40well on their way to winning the National League West for an 11th time in the last 12 MLB seasons.

02:46But Joe, I do think that is fascinating because Shohei Otani is going to run away with the

02:50National League MVP award. He's won multiple MVP awards during his time in the American League

02:55because not only is he great at the dish, he also was pitching on the bump. I wonder if there are

03:01internal conversations with Shohei and the Dodgers about him even pitching again. We expect him to do

03:07so after he recovers from the elbow injury, but he's putting up these numbers as just a DH and is

03:14still going to run away with the most valuable player award in the National League. That is what

03:20is insane in everyday DH winning the MVP. Well, when you're making history in so many different

03:27facets, it is hard to not be in consideration, let alone run away with the award. You see the numbers

03:33this year for Shohei Otani. He founded his own club, 50 home runs, 50 stolen bases in a single

03:41season. So yes, the Dodgers are going to win the National League West. They have a four-game lead

03:47over the Padres. They have clinched a postseason berth. They are on their way with a couple of

03:52more wins to clinching the NL West again for the 11th time in the last 12 years. And right now,

04:00they are tied atop the National League for the best record in baseball and in the NL alongside

04:06Philadelphia, 91 and 62 as the heated race is on for that top overall seed in the National League.

04:14It's part of our headlines from yesterday. The New York Mets just keep winning baseball games,

04:2010 runs in three consecutive games for the Amazons. The first time in franchise history

04:27for New York doing that, 10 or more runs in three consecutive games. They got to Taiwan Walker

04:32early and often in the opener yesterday, winning 10 to 6 as a home favorite against the best team

04:38in the National League entering. And what we're all worried once Lindor went down, we're like,

04:45oh boy, you know, what are the Mets going to do? Well, what they're going to do is just go

04:48out and start scoring double-digit runs every game. It really doesn't make a darn bit of

04:54difference here. So the Mets really, as far as I'm concerned, have put themselves in a position

05:00where they control their own destiny now. And that's a good spot to be in when you're playing

05:07some of your best offensive baseball that you've played all year long minus your best piece at the

05:14top of the order. Who if Shohei Ohtani did not exist or still played in Anaheim, Francisco Lindor

05:21more than likely would have won the National League MVP award. The Mets have won six of their

05:26last eight games. New York now 13 and 4 in September. And Joe, these are the important ones

05:32for New York. They took advantage against the Nationals. They swept Washington. One of the

05:36easier teams, at least on paper, still remaining. But this four-game set against Philly seemed to

05:41be a daunting task as Philadelphia is still in the running for that number one overall seed,

05:46of course, before they go to Atlanta on Tuesday in a series that might decide the season. Speaking

05:52of the Braves, they hammered the Reds yesterday in the rubber match in Cincy 15-3. Chris Sale,

05:59great once again. Atlanta was a minus 220 Moneyline favorite. Sale now 18-3 this year

06:05with a 2-3 AERA. Both of those are the best in MLB. He's going to win the National League Cy Young

06:11Award. Five innings of work allowing two earned runs. It wasn't his most stellar start. But Joe,

06:1618 consecutive starts now for Sale where he has not allowed more than two earned runs. That dates

06:23back to the beginning of June. Yeah, it's some of these teams here, especially with

06:31like Atlanta, I think it's stick of fork time in here. Give the personal accolades out.

06:39It's great. Individuals had it, but that was one team, injuries aside, that might be the most,

06:44when we look back on it, the most disappointing season of any club that was expected to make.

06:50And not just make, but they were expected to win their division as well. And it's been anything but

06:56a great season for them. For a seventh straight year for Atlanta, if they are going to have some

07:01life, they trail both the D-backs and the match by two games for those last spots in the National

07:06League wildcard chase. They are going to need guys like Matt Olsen, who had two home runs and

07:11four RBIs in since yesterday. And Michael Harris Jr., who hit a home run in all three games against

07:17the Reds in the Great American Small Park. Four home runs in total, two yesterday with four RBIs.

07:23The O's have been struggling since the All-Star break. They avoid a sweep at home against San

07:28Francisco as Anthony Santander walks it off with a two-run home run. But Joey, blown save out of

07:35Sir Anthony Dominguez, of course, in the same week that Craig Kimbrell was DFA-ed. Baltimore's

07:41got some issue in the back end of that bullpen. But yesterday, all eyes on the American League

07:47Central and Cleveland. Some day baseball for the fourth and final game of that set between the

07:53Guardians and the Twins. Cleveland rallies again to walk it off for a second consecutive day.

07:58In the bottom of the 10th, Andres Jimenez delivers the game-winning

08:03RBI. Cleveland edges out Minnesota 3-2. The Guardians quench an American League

08:08playoff berth, still well in front in the American League Central. The Twins have dropped nine of

08:13their last 13 games. So as of this Friday morning and during the weekend, it's Minnesota and Detroit

08:20tied for the final wildcard spot in the American League.

08:25You would have said that a month ago, Ben. They would have thought you were crazy.

08:28Wait, Detroit? Did you say Detroit? Yeah, Detroit, exactly. Who quietly, under the radar,

08:35has one of the best pitching stats we've seen here since about mid-July.

08:40And they got healthy with some of their young studs that they brought up here, Ben. And this

08:45is a real team who's playing with confidence, with the right manager at the right time, can sneak in.

08:51And boy, oh boy, that's a dangerous team heading into the playoffs if they pull this off.

08:57Yes, they certainly are. And Joe, since August 22nd, when the Tigers were four games below 500,

09:04they are 18-7 in their last 25. They did lose the season series to their divisional mates

09:13in Minnesota. So the Twins would have the tiebreaker advantage if they ended with the same

09:19record.
