Festival of the Mind: Art & academia collide in family-friendly educational festival in Sheffield city centre

The Festival of the Mind is back in Sheffield city centre to bring arts and academics together in striking visual exhibits across the city.  Whether it is a talk under the roof of the Spiegeltent on Barkers Pool or a visit to Persistence Works to see the Tar-Dish, there is a little bit for everyone.  The Star spoke to Professor Vanessa Toulmin, the Festival Director, and Georgina Kettlewell from the Yorkshire Artspace in Persistence Works, about the festivities.

00:00Well the festival is a series of talks, exhibitions, installations, but the whole idea is that

00:07our research takes place behind university walls and this is an opportunity to see what

00:12our research is, what the impact of our research is, and to use creative arts and media practice

00:17as a means of translating that to a way that is appealing and educational and informative.

00:22I would say come down, see the world, research that makes an impact to your lives, it makes

00:27an impact today, it will make an impact tomorrow or in the future, but it's also fun, entertaining,

00:33educational and I think what many people said to me years ago is that I always used to wonder

00:38what they did up the hill in the university and now you've brought the university to us.

00:42So for 11 days you can, free of charge, come in, listen to researchers, listen to academics,

00:48look at artists' amazing work, bring your children, there's lots of family events, or

00:52hang out with, you know, cool creative musicians and practitioners from Sheffield who have

00:58kind of spent their creative energy translating research for the betterment and understanding

01:04of everyone.

01:05It's a collaboration between visual artists and researchers at Sheffield University, so

01:10it's about those two things coming together and here at Yorkshire Arts Space, which is

01:15the centre for art production, it's really great because we're home to lots of artists

01:20so it's really about, I suppose, interpreting research through art for the general public.
