Repair Jigsaw Bosch PST 58 PE

Outdoors in the Low Countries

The blade roller guide has fallen out of the Bosch PST 58 PE jigsaw. I was lucky to see most of the parts lying on the ground.   In this video the roller blade and axis are mounted back and the missing E-clip retaining ring is added to ensure proper locking. 00:00Hi everyone, Jeff from Outdoors in the Low Counties.

00:02Now I was working with my jigsaw, the Bosch PST 58PE.

00:08It's already a very old saw, but still working very good.

00:12And suddenly I saw these parts lying on the ground.

00:16Hmm.

00:18Generally when parts are lying on the ground, that's not good.

00:23So they're very small parts, so I was very lucky that I saw them lying.

00:26When I was on rough terrain, I most probably wouldn't have seen them.

00:30So I was very curious if they indeed came from the jigsaw.

00:33And this little part should have been in this location.

00:36And it's the guide roller.

00:37And the function is that it takes the horizontal force when using the saw.

00:42Especially with thicker materials, the force in this direction during sawing can be quite high.

00:47And the guide roller is taking up this force.

00:50And as a result, the bending moment of the saw onto the motor of this machine is much smaller.

00:56Which of course helps to increase the lifetime of this jigsaw significantly.

01:01Now apart from reducing the bending moment onto the motor of the jigsaw,

01:05the blade roller also has some other important functions

01:08that ensure a smooth and accurate cutting of the saw blade.

01:11Because it helps to keep the jigsaw blade stable during operation by providing lateral support.

01:16And thereby preventing the blade from bending or twisting.

01:19Especially this can happen during cutting of thicker and harder materials.

01:23And it also helps to maintain the blade's vertical alignment.

01:26Which is very important for detailed and precision work.

01:29And thereby minimizes the chance of the blade wandering of the intended cutting line.

01:34And because of the guide roller, the blade will have a less chance of bending or snapping during cutting.

01:40And as a result also thereby extending the lifespan of the blade.

01:44So it's clearly that it's very important that we put this guide roller back into the jigsaw.

01:49Now I have this saw already for more than 30 years.

01:51Did a lot of projects with it.

01:53And it came with the box and I still have all the manuals and all the parts still with it.

01:58I like a tool with a box because then I can easily put it away.

02:02And also it keeps everything clean from dust and everything.

02:05And it also ensures that your tools will be in good shape even after so many years of using it.

02:11So I looked on the internet to see if there are still spare parts available for this machine.

02:16But apparently it's already that old that no spare parts are available anymore.

02:20Especially for the guide roller and the small pen and the locking of it.

02:25So we have to do it in a different way and that's exactly what we're going to do.

02:28So the first thing we're going to do is to remove the saw so we have better access.

02:32And we will not hurt our hands while working on it.

02:45There we go.

02:46So we're also going to remove this bracket so we have better access to this small part.

02:50Because it's a very small thing you have to mount.

02:53And we can do that by removing those allen keys.

02:56So let's do that.

03:07So now we have proper access.

03:09And it's also important to know that this little pen only fits in one direction.

03:14So it won't fit in this direction but it does fit in that direction.

03:23And the locking of the axis is done by this very small E-clip retaining ring.

03:27And on the other side that one is missing.

03:30And that one I couldn't find back because it's a very small ring and I really didn't have a clue when I lost it.

03:37Now in order to prevent the pen from falling out again I need of course to also lock it at the small side of the pen.

03:44And these E-clip retaining rings are very general and standardized.

03:48And they are very easy to get online.

03:50And a box like this with many different sizes in it is very cheap and well available on the internet.

03:58So let's now also determine what size we need to have.

04:07So it's a 2mm clip that we need to put on this.

04:12Well, this box goes from 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

04:19So a lot of sizes.

04:21And the one we need to have is a 2mm clip.

04:30It's this one.

04:32So this is the part we need to add.

04:35So let's now put it together.

04:42The ruler seems to be symmetric so it doesn't matter which side is where.

04:52There we have it.

04:53And now we have to put on the ring.

04:57The retainer ring.

04:59And that will be...

05:07Something we need to do very carefully.

05:12I will use these pliers to put it on.

05:27That's it.

05:32So that was an easy job.

05:34Let's put the bracket back.

05:42Don't overdo it.

05:46You will only damage it.

05:49Let's also put the saw back in.

05:57Make sure it's nice.

06:02In the right direction.

06:12There we go.

06:16The ruler is back in again.

06:18The saw had been repaired for only a few cents because these boxes are very, very cheap.

06:23Like a few dollars or euros.

06:26So to make sure that everything is fixed correctly, let's also do a quick test.

06:41Let's do it.

06:56You can see it works good.

07:12So the test has gone well.

07:14No problem at all with using it under the different settings of the saw.

07:20No problem at all.

07:22So the guide roller works again.

07:24So you see how easy it is to repair a system like this.

07:27So I hope it works again for another 30 years.

07:30I don't want to think how old I am by then, but nevertheless, it's good to have it running again.
