00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel.
00:02In this video, I will explain the ending of Inside, so, let's begin.
00:06Directed by Vassilis Katsoupis, Inside is about a man's struggle to survive in isolation.
00:12From losing all hope to making the best use of every resource to survive, the film focuses
00:16on the shifting temperaments of Nemo, an art thief.
00:19All that the audience knows about Nemo is his undying love for art.
00:23From a young age, he realized that art always had value.
00:27And he valued it more than the people around him.
00:30Here is everything you need to know, just to let you know this video will contain spoilers.
00:34Nemo forced entry into an elegant New York penthouse apartment, and with the assistance
00:38of his teammate on a walkie-talkie, he managed to disable the security alarm.
00:43He swiftly grabbed hold of the three Egon Schiele paintings, but he was unable to find
00:46the self-portrait.
00:48Time was running out, and Nemo frantically searched the apartment for the million-dollar
00:52art piece.
00:53He ultimately gave up on the piece and was ready to leave the apartment.
00:57As he entered the activation code for the door lock, the security alarm went off.
01:02His teammate announced that he had lost access to the apartment's security and that the
01:05door was completely locked.
01:08Nemo was on his own now, and he was desperate to turn off the alarm.
01:11He mishandled the smart thermostat system in the process, which led to an increase in
01:15temperature.
01:17Nemo was briefly relieved when he turned off the alarm, but he was tormented by the thought
01:20of being trapped in a stranger's apartment.
01:23He tried to find a way to get to the lock on the door, but it was impossible.
01:27He soon realized that the apartment was becoming unbearably hot, and to make matters worse,
01:32the plumbing system had been turned off, and he had no access to drinking water.
01:36While the smart refrigerator always played Macarena, whenever the door was left open
01:40for long, there was barely any food left.
01:43He scraped the fungus off the little food that he found and called it a night.
01:47The temperature kept on rising, and all Nemo wanted was to drink water.
01:51His only source of liquid was the shallow pool with stale water in the middle of the
01:55apartment, but even that turned out to be undrinkable.
01:58In a desperate attempt, he licked the walls off the freezer to quench his thirst.
02:02He was elated when the vegetation sprinkler turned on suddenly one day.
02:06Just like a little boy in the summer, he laid on the ground to feel the water fall on his
02:10face without any care.
02:12The very basic things that we never take note of are, at times, the most valued objects
02:16of our lives.
02:18Water was nothing short of a treasure that Nemo collected and used carefully during his
02:21stay.
02:22Nemo's only source of entertainment was the surveillance footage that the apartment had
02:26access to.
02:27He started to build a narrative around the people who appeared in the footage.
02:31He developed an affection for the cleaning lady and screamed for help every time she
02:35came up to the apartment floor.
02:37His desperate cry for help went unheard as she vibed with the music that she listened
02:40to.
02:41The temperature of the house shifted from warm to freezing cold, and Nemo had to find
02:45a way to survive the sudden change.
02:47He focused on building a tower with the apartment furniture to get access to the skylight and
02:51break free.
02:53Every day he could relate more to the people in the painting who waited on the flight stairs
02:56without a flight to board.
02:58What was in the chamber?
03:00And how did Nemo escape?
03:02Nemo's condition was quite like that of a trapped pigeon in an apartment, every attempt
03:06he made to leave eventually turned futile.
03:09After reaching the skylight, he realized he had to unscrew the glass panel to make his
03:12final escape.
03:14Days turned into weeks, the empty sink was now cluttered with used utensils, his feces
03:18were now all over the contemporary-style bathroom, and the wait to escape the nightmare continued
03:23to prolong.
03:24The image of the businessman, who was now in Kazakhstan for a business trip and enjoying
03:28the luxuries that life had to offer, infuriated Nemo.
03:32He defaced the portrait of the businessman and his daughter.
03:35Their privileged position bothered him as they looked at his miserable condition with
03:38a sense of pride.
03:40The apartment was modern and chic, but it was soulless.
03:44The lack of emotional attachment to the space was evident in its hollowness.
03:48The kind of empty people that Nemo perhaps thought the collector was.
03:52He found Sheila's self-portrait hidden in a secret chamber, but its value had been starkly
03:55reduced by then.
03:57The owner of the apartment called the chamber the unseen world, and in it, he kept his replica
04:01doll that held closely the assumably original manuscript of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell,
04:06a book written by renowned English author William Blake.
04:09The self-portrait and the manuscript were his most prized possessions, which he wanted
04:13to protect symbolically with his life.
04:16Nemo dreamed of meeting the owner at an art gallery.
04:19He appreciated Nemo for living up to the challenge.
04:22Nemo could sense that he was the puppet the owner was describing, and everyone else, including
04:26Jasmine, was an actor fixed for the challenge.
04:29He was the puppet in the hands of his master, and no matter how hard he tried to run away
04:33from destiny, it would eventually catch up with him.
04:36When Nemo woke up from his sleep, he was all the more determined to challenge destiny.
04:41He resorted to eating the fish out of the aquarium to keep himself alive, and he spent
04:45hours working to unlock the glass panel.
04:47He sketched on the walls of the house and, at times, conducted solo comedy shows — his
04:52insanity was now on full display.
04:54With his leg broken and the supply of food coming to an end, Nemo often stared at the
04:58abyss he sketched on the wall, knowing that his death in the apartment was becoming inevitable.
05:03He thought that the fire alarm could be his last ray of hope.
05:07He triggered it, and water splashed all across the apartment, but no one came to his rescue.
05:12It was winter, and there was no hope left in Nemo.
05:15He left a note addressed to the owner stating that his home needed destruction — after
05:19all, art is born out of destruction.
05:21A wide shot of the apartment displayed the art that was formed out of chaos, destruction,
05:25and endless misery.
05:27Nemo climbed up his tower one last time, and the glass panel of the skylight crashed to
05:31the ground.
05:32The ending of Inside can be interpreted in two ways — either Nemo made the escape since
05:36he managed to unscrew the glass panel, or he gave up on his life after building the
05:40masterpiece out of his lived experience.
05:43That's all for now folks.
05:44I would appreciate it if you could give the video a super thanks with a thumbs up and
05:48subscribe to the channel, so you can see more content like this every day.
05:51Take care.
