Sylvester Stallone Details Upcoming Memoir, Talks 'Tulsa King' Role

Sylvester Stallone is hard at work on an upcoming book about his rise to superstardom ... and he says Woodstock was a big moment for him.

00:00One thing we haven't seen you do yet is a memoir.

00:06Is that something in the works?

00:08Well, you are a psychic, aren't you guys?

00:11My God, yes.

00:12I am working right now on a novel

00:16with a co-writer who's brilliant.

00:18And we're kind of like chronicling the morphing

00:25of how this all happened out of,

00:28I was least likely, I mean,

00:30I was voted most likely to end up

00:32in the electric chair in high school.

00:33I mean, I shouldn't be here kind of a thing.

00:37But when I arrived in New York,

00:41it was the day of Woodstock.

00:42And I go, what is that?

00:44And the truth is I walked around

00:47and I didn't know one person.

00:48There's 8 million people.

00:50And I was just sort of afraid.

00:53I go, there's not one person here

00:55who cares a thing about you or ever will.

00:59So this is, you better do something to survive.

01:02You better like go at it

01:04because you have zero support team.

01:06And from that point on,

01:08I realized that you have to rely very much upon yourself.

01:12And that hasn't stopped.

01:13It really, it's been my biggest fears

01:16turned out to be my biggest successes,

01:18trying to overcome them.

01:20And, but I realized that literally

01:22when I stepped out of New York and that bus station,

01:25I went, God, there isn't one person

01:27that cares what happens to me.

01:29So you better care about yourself.

01:31And that was the beginning of this pursuit.

01:34If you haven't seen Tulsa King, you should see it.

01:36And if you are a fan of Yellowstone,

01:39you will absolutely love this show.

01:41It is a Taylor Sheridan show.

01:43It's got all that drama.

01:45And you got Sly playing a mob boss

01:50who's actually been now living in Tulsa

01:52as you get from the Tulsa King.

01:55And this season, he's got some competition

01:57from a couple of other heavy hitters

01:59from the mafia who've come to town.

02:01No shade because you know I love you.

02:04But in season one, it starts with you getting out of prison.

02:09And then you get back in prison at the end of one

02:11and you get out at season two.

02:13You're kind of a lousy criminal.

02:16I am sort of institutionalized.

02:18There's something very comforting about a jail cell.

02:21No, that's why I wanted to literally,

02:25he's evolving and actually being in prison the first time,

02:29he became a jailhouse attorney.

02:32So he comes out and he literally takes this case to court

02:35and he wins and he wins over serious competition.

02:38So we see that evolution.

02:40So it's kind of comedic and kind of interesting,

02:42but that was 11 page courtroom scene.

02:45That was a long scene.

02:47I'm a lawyer.

02:48So how did that work for you?

02:50Well, the best part of it is you get to wear nice clothes

02:53because the actual lawyering part, I'm not cut out for it.

02:57I mean, it's serious focus and it's hard for me to focus.

03:01I would rather just have my client get convicted

03:04and go to lunch early.

03:05I mean, I'm not dedicated to the profession.

03:09Season one was mostly drama and it shifted.

03:14I don't remember seeing this ever.

03:17It's more of a comedy in season two.

03:20I don't remember seeing a shift like that in other shows.

03:23It was well thought out.

03:24I mean, there was some behind the scene battles

03:26about the tone, but I thought I wanted to play

03:30as close to my real personality as possible.

03:33So I tend to go from very serious Rambo

03:36to rather irreverent, as you know,

03:39because we've known each other a long time

03:41and I hadn't seen that in a gangster.

03:43Usually it's very monotone and without frills

03:48and dead eye stares and always feeling like you're

03:52in a revenge or you're in a hostile mode.

03:55I'm not.

03:56Actually, he's very in touch with his inner child,

04:00you know what I'm saying?

04:02But when the time comes to get nasty with other criminals,

04:08he goes to another level.

04:10You won't believe the ending of this season.

04:12You won't believe it.
