00:00:00The rest of the world, I'm Marlon Hopkins, and as always, welcome to The Morning Edition.
00:00:23It's Wednesday, 11th September.
00:00:26Thank you very much for joining us this morning.
00:00:28You know, I was just thinking, this day is very significant, and more so for brothers
00:00:33and sisters in the US, right?
00:00:35You remember, many years ago, where you were when those two planes hit the towers in the
00:00:42US?
00:00:43I was preparing, getting ready to go to work, and I'm looking at international news, and
00:00:48I'm looking at this plane making its way to the tower, and then the next one hit.
00:00:57A lot of people couldn't believe what they were seeing, and a lot of people would tell
00:01:00you, well, they thought it was a movie that they were watching, but a number of lives
00:01:05would have been lost in that.
00:01:09A number of people who would have survived, they later died because of the trauma of it,
00:01:14and because of the dust and the other items that were in the walls, asbestos and so on.
00:01:21There's a famous picture with a lady covered in white.
00:01:25You remember that lady?
00:01:27She subsequently died some years later because of ailments that stemmed from that attack.
00:01:34So a very special good morning to all of our viewers in the US.
00:01:39We're thinking of you this morning, all right?
00:01:41So back home now.
00:01:43How did you spend your night?
00:01:44I hope it was a good night, and that you're safe and sound with us this morning.
00:01:47I don't have very good news for you when we go to the newspaper.
00:01:53But I have to tell you, and I'm sure that you would have heard it on the news last night,
00:01:57yeah?
00:01:58But dad, wife, son shot dead in Pitti Valley.
00:02:03Family wiped out, and that picture there, the caption says, horrifying, the wooden house
00:02:08at Upper Pioneer Drive, Pitti Valley, where three members of a family were shot dead on
00:02:13Monday night.
00:02:14Killed were Marlon Lee, 41, in set, his wife, Selena Rodriguez, 34, in set, and his 17-year-old
00:02:22son, Malik Lee, yeah?
00:02:25An entire family wiped out, you know?
00:02:29To me, this is very, very significant, where we're seeing that it's no longer, you know
00:02:38how some time ago, people and the criminal element would be coming with these hand pistols
00:02:47to do what they have to do, but now they're coming with the machine guns.
00:02:51And that's why you're seeing so many people being killed in one incident, you know?
00:02:56So condolences to the relatives of these victims here.
00:03:01It's not a good state of affairs in Trinidad and Tobago at all.
00:03:05All right, moving on to the back page now.
00:03:08Economists, serious risk of undermining integrity, trust in public fiscal institutions if impasse
00:03:15not resolved.
00:03:17Giwanti warning, the impasse between the Auditor General and the Finance Ministry with respect
00:03:22to Trinidad and Tobago's national accounts can spell negative consequences for the country,
00:03:28according to economists.
00:03:30The Express spoke to economists Dr. Valmiki Arjun and Dr. Ronald Ramkissoon yesterday.
00:03:37And hi-ho silver, TNT para-athlete Akeem Stewart displays his silver medal, which he won in
00:03:43the men's discus throw F64 event at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, France, during
00:03:49a reception in his honor at Piarco International Airport yesterday.
00:03:54Go Akeem, boy.
00:03:55Akeem, congratulations to you and all of the persons who would have contributed to your
00:04:01continuing success.
00:04:02Yeah?
00:04:03All right, so we'll be moving on.
00:04:05What do we have?
00:04:06Yes.
00:04:07All right.
00:04:09Soka Warriors held to goalless draw versus French Guyana.
00:04:13Nothing comes easy these days, and Trinidad and Tobago's senior men's footballers were
00:04:18made to work for a share of the points when held goalless by French Guyana in the 2024-2025
00:04:25Concacaf Nations League match at the Dwight York Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago, last night.
00:04:31The route to a quarterfinal spot got harder.
00:04:33You have just one point gathered from two matches and only a home and away series coming
00:04:39up against Cuba next month to complete the four-match preliminary round.
00:04:44Now the top two of each five nation group teams will advance to the quarters where they
00:04:49will be joined by four-seeded teams, the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Panama.
00:04:56All right?
00:04:57All right.
00:04:58So we're moving on.
00:04:59So it's time to remind you about Trinbago, your nice feature.
00:05:04But to participate, you can email your videos and images to, that's the address there, trinbagoyournice

00:05:26Anthony.
00:05:27Anthony.
00:05:28Anthony.
00:05:29Anthony.
00:05:30Thank you very much for that picture there.
00:05:32I get the feeling.

00:05:38Yeah.
00:05:39Yeah.

00:05:44Well, I remember the chip chip story.
00:05:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:05:46They remember it.
00:05:47So I don't have to tell you it again.
00:05:51So Anthony, thank you very much for your picture this morning.
00:05:53We do appreciate it.
00:05:54All right.
00:05:55So you have your coffee, your tea.
00:05:57You have something to eat.

00:08:32See you there.
00:08:51All right, everybody.
00:09:21So welcome back.
00:09:22A very special good morning to all of you again.
00:09:25So new seating arrangements in the parliament for four out of the five opposition MPs who
00:09:30months ago called for elections within the United National Congress.
00:09:34The move is being seen as a demotion and disciplinary action.
00:09:38However, some of the MPs say they are not bothered.
00:09:41Well on the line this morning is one of the MPs, the Mayaro MP, Rashton Parry.
00:09:46Mr. Parry, good morning.
00:09:47Hi.
00:09:48Good morning.
00:09:49Good morning to you and your viewers.
00:09:50Thank you for having me.
00:09:51Of course, Mr. Parry, it's always good to speak with you.
00:09:53Well, one of the seats that has not been changed or any new arrangements is the seat of Mr.
00:10:01Dinesh Rambali.
00:10:02All right.
00:10:03But, Mr. Parry, you have had at least 48 hours to think about this.
00:10:08How do you see it?
00:10:09Some are saying it's disciplinary action.
00:10:12Well, I don't think it's disciplinary action in any way.
00:10:17Where one sits in the parliament doesn't alter your view, your position on matters.
00:10:23When I swore the oath on September 7, 2015, I swore allegiance to Trinidad and Tobago.
00:10:30So unless you tell me to go and sit down in Grenada, I don't have a problem.
00:10:34You know, if you put me on a Crixton or a pigtail bucket at the end of the corner of
00:10:38the parliament, I will still do my duty.
00:10:40So I don't think it's a demotion.
00:10:41As a matter of fact, I saw an article in one of the newspapers yesterday or this morning
00:10:47where the Chief Whip has identified that, you know, some of the seat changes were promotions.
00:10:52You know, he claimed that MP Haines was promoted from the back to the front bench.
00:10:58So I mean, it's all in the discretion of the Chief Whip, the political leader, and I am
00:11:02sure in their wisdom, they would not do anything that creates a weaker team to fight the PNM.
00:11:10So I trust in their judgment that they have created a way that we will be able to perform
00:11:15much better in the parliament, and I look forward to the budget debates that are coming.
00:11:19But you know, Mr. Parry, judging from our political history, usually, and usually when
00:11:28MPs really go against the, let's say, policies, the direction of the party, you usually see
00:11:37changes like this in the parliament.
00:11:41And I think we can determine from history that when things like these happen, it's not
00:11:50a very good sign for the MPs, you know.
00:11:54Well, I mean, I cannot sit in the mind of the political leader or the Chief Whip or
00:12:00the party's leadership at the end of the day.
00:12:03I can look forward to doing the duty that I was sworn to, and I will continue to do
00:12:10it, and nobody says that life is written in concrete.
00:12:15There is things that has to change, and perhaps what we are really seeing, Marlon, is really
00:12:20an evolution in the politics in the UNC.
00:12:24It may require some of the same activities, but it's how we respond to it, because at
00:12:30the end of the day, I mean, I see the newspaper they carry, they label the five MPs as dissidents
00:12:36and rebels.
00:12:38But I mean, that is just romanticizing the whole activity.
00:12:42What we did was that we followed a constitutional mandate.
00:12:47Rebels and dissidents don't follow any constitution, they mash it up.
00:12:51We follow the constitution.
00:12:53It was a leadership election.
00:12:55I see some articles say that we challenged the political leader.
00:12:59The political leader was not on the slate.
00:13:02Unfortunately, the leader jumped into the fray and threw her support behind one of the
00:13:07team, which I believe was wrong, still wrong.
00:13:10But we continued to challenge issues in the party during the campaign.
00:13:14This had nothing to do with government policy.
00:13:17This had nothing to do with national policy.
00:13:19This had to do with things that I, plus 4,000 or more other members of the party, saw that
00:13:26we needed changes.
00:13:28We used the opportunity of a constitutionally due election to drive those changes.
00:13:32Now, we lost the election, but the matters have not been resolved.
00:13:35And since then, I have written the general secretary, I've written the chairman of the
00:13:39party, identifying that fact, that the issues that we raise are important to the membership
00:13:45of the party.
00:13:46And I'm looking forward that this new leadership, the ones that were elected on June the 6th,
00:13:52somewhere around then, will continue to drive the change that we were asking for.
00:13:56So I don't see where dissident and rebels and so on come in, that we remain loyal to
00:14:01the foundation policies of the party.
00:14:03The United National Congress is one out of two political vehicles that run government
00:14:07in this country.
00:14:08And I think we are the better vehicle.
00:14:10But I have a challenge with some of the decisions that the leadership is making.
00:14:14And as a member of the party, I have a right and a duty to raise these matters.
00:14:19And I have continued to raise these matters after the election in a way that is befitting
00:14:25of a political organization, internally without making torture back in the public space.
00:14:30So I will continue to do what I have to do.
00:14:32The party will make whatever actions that they see fit going forward.
00:14:36But you know, Mr. Parry, I think that it is fair to say that you and the other four MPs,
00:14:44you all continue to show a strong public front, especially when speaking about matters such
00:14:53as these.
00:14:54And you all continue to claim, well, what we did was not a betrayal of the party or
00:14:58the party policies or the political leader, however you want to put it.
00:15:03But do you think that the party sees it that way?
00:15:07Because as I said, in the public's eye, this action being taken against the five of you,
00:15:16it is being seen as, well, here's what, this is what you did, so now you are going to have
00:15:22to pay for this politically.
00:15:27The party is not the 19 or 20 persons who sit in leadership positions.
00:15:32The party is a wider organization that we have always felt had we had their full support
00:15:38in terms of the amount of support that we had during the campaign, we were just unable
00:15:44to mobilize sufficient votes on the day of the election.
00:15:47That being said, the political enemy here is the PNM.
00:15:51It is not the citizens of this country, it is not the UNC membership, it is not the UNC
00:15:55leadership.
00:15:56As I mentioned, I remain a solid member of the United National Congress.
00:16:01I joined a party over 10 years ago where I believe in the principles and the philosophy
00:16:06of that party, outside of the PNM.
00:16:09That I still hold strongly, too.
00:16:11It is some of the decisions I have an issue with.
00:16:13So I have no problem with the party.
00:16:14The party has no problem with me.
00:16:15And I say the party is not 20 people sitting in Chagones in the party headquarters.
00:16:20The party is wider than that.
00:16:22The political enemy is the PNM.
00:16:24It is their failure to deal with crime.
00:16:26I mean, just before I came on, I heard the story about the family that was wiped out
00:16:30in Dingo Martin.
00:16:31I mean, look, at the end of the day, the enemy is the crime situation.
00:16:38Citizens continue to drop like flies.
00:16:40Fear is stifling businesses.
00:16:43It's stifling business activities.
00:16:46Look a few years ago, you saw an uptick in elderly people being attacked, home invasions
00:16:51rubbed.
00:16:52Today, we have children being rubbed, a nine-year-old schoolboy was rubbed $27.
00:16:59We have killing of little children.
00:17:01So where I sit in the parliament, and my feeling, whether I love or I don't love anybody, is
00:17:06irrelevant to what matters in this country today, crime, foreign investment, lack of
00:17:12foreign exchange, collapsing education system, collapsing infrastructure.
00:17:17So what's happening in the UNC, really and truly, it is internal party politics that
00:17:23we are going to deal with as a unit.
00:17:26We will try, or we will continue to be as respectful as we can.
00:17:30We started a draining campaign.
00:17:32I have continued to do that after the campaign.
00:17:34But the five MPs who are now clustered on the southern end of the parliamentary chamber,
00:17:42I made a comment that the real business of the parliament has now shifted.
00:17:46Because I will tell you this, my four colleagues and I, we deliver very good products in the
00:17:55parliament.
00:17:56You've listened to MP Haynes, you've listened to MP Rambley, Rodney's a fireball, Dr. Rice
00:18:02an astute doctor, very well-versed in medical issues.
00:18:05So I will tell citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, look forward to a shift into a coalition of
00:18:11very good contributions in the parliament, and we will continue the job that we were
00:18:16hired and sworn to do, in my case, a little over nine years ago.
00:18:20But you know, how are you all expected to do that?
00:18:23Because there is a perceived strained relationship between you, well, not you alone, but the
00:18:32five MPs and the leadership.
00:18:34Of course, you would know, Mr. Parry, and it was widely reported that recently there
00:18:40was a UNC election planning meeting, and you all were not involved in that process
00:18:44at all.
00:18:45So if you look at things in that context, it gives the impression that there is still
00:18:52division between the five MPs and the leadership, and the leader of the political party.
00:19:01We spoke about decisions of the party, and that is one of them.
00:19:05We talk about, while I have no issues with the party that I belong to, that I've worked
00:19:11hard for nine years to turn the Mayaro seat from a marginal into a pretty much safe seat
00:19:17for the United National Congress, it is these very same decisions that I spoke about that
00:19:22I have issues with.
00:19:24Whatever is the reason that the meetings were conducted and I wasn't involved, it doesn't
00:19:29diminish my duty at the end of the day to prepare Mayaro as a constituency for the best
00:19:35possible election outcome for the United National Congress.
00:19:40There are things that I am engaged in inside of the party.
00:19:44I have conversations with persons in the party, people who are sitting on the natics, people
00:19:49who are sitting at the leadership level, but I remain respectful that these conversations
00:19:56remain as internal party business, because this is why I think we go wrong, is that if
00:20:01you want to drive change in your organization, you can't go on the side of the street and
00:20:06peddle bottle and stone every Monday morning.
00:20:08You stay inside, you stick it out, you rock the tree as much as you can, you have the
00:20:13conversations, you hope for a response.
00:20:16I can tell you the responses have not been coming as fast and furious as I would like,
00:20:21but it doesn't deter my ambition to drive the changes that we campaign for.
00:20:27So what the public sees on the outside, they will perceive things as their reality.
00:20:32Is there some strain?
00:20:33Absolutely.
00:20:34Am I getting the responses that I would like as fast as I would like?
00:20:39No.
00:20:40People see the changes in the seat arrangement historically that you are being disciplined.
00:20:47If I'm being disciplined, I don't feel it.
00:20:51I look forward to the budget that is coming.
00:20:54I am always prepared.
00:20:56As you know, I shadow the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
00:20:59I speak on the economy and finance by profession.
00:21:03I'm a telecommunications digital business person, so I can speak on digital business,
00:21:07tourism.
00:21:08I live in an energy constituency.
00:21:10I'm very versed on energy and energy matters.
00:21:13So I look forward to my contribution.
00:21:15My constituents look forward to my contributions every time in Parliament, and those are the
00:21:20positive things that I'm going to go.
00:21:21I have 15 months left on this shelf life of my second term, and I look forward to present
00:21:27myself once again to the Screening Committee of the United National Congress with the work
00:21:32that I've done for nine years, and it will be up to them.
00:21:35It will be up to them to decide whether the work that I've done, we can continue doing
00:21:39it for another five years, hopefully in government this time, but it means to get into government.
00:21:44We need to make fundamental changes in our system, our structure, the way we do business,
00:21:48and that is what I keep championing for, and I will continue doing that over the next 15
00:21:53months.
00:21:54You filed your nomination papers earlier this year to defend your seat in the next general
00:21:59election.
00:22:00You did allude to the fact of Mayaru and your constituency a little earlier.
00:22:06You feel that the UNC is going to give you the nod in light of what would have transpired
00:22:12over the past few months.
00:22:14You think that the UNC is going to forgive you and say, Rashdan, well, yes, we want you
00:22:21to defend the Mayaru constituency.
00:22:24You feel optimistic about that?
00:22:28We've done very good work in Mayaru.
00:22:30I have done very good work in Mayaru.
00:22:32I mean, in the politics, nothing good you do goes unpunished at the end of the day.
00:22:37You service 10,000 people, when they come, somebody will vex with you for something.
00:22:41I think I've done a reasonably good job.
00:22:44If there are people in the UNC, within the Mayaru constituency, who feel that I have
00:22:49not done sufficiently, and they are prepared to do the work, and they can convince the
00:22:55leadership that they can do a better job than me, well, so be it.
00:22:58I had a life before politics, as a businessman, as an engineer.
00:23:02I came into the politics, I put it aside, I focused on public service, public life for
00:23:07the last nine years.
00:23:09And if in the wisdom of the party, that there is someone else who can carry the brand, and
00:23:14the business of the UNC, in Mayaru, other than me, well, so be it.
00:23:19Public life is the most difficult.
00:23:20I mean, I've done some of the most difficult jobs in the world.
00:23:23I've worked on platforms, I've worked on engineering systems, I've worked on the Y2K system in
00:23:292000.
00:23:30The hardest job I've done in my entire life is public service as an MP, because it is
00:23:35difficult to please people, it's not an easy job.
00:23:37It's the only job you do good, and somebody will still curse you every Monday morning.
00:23:41People look forward to that on a Monday, I don't know.
00:23:43So again, listen, I could talk about 99 things that is wrong in the United National Congress
00:23:49in the public space, but it will add no value to my conversation and the work that I have
00:23:53to do.
00:23:54I will continue to champion the changes that I want in my party internally, because I want
00:23:58a stronger party, I want a stronger party.
00:24:02One of the campaign logos we had during the campaign was a stronger UNC, a stronger Trinidad
00:24:06and Tobago.
00:24:07So all of us who feel that we have, you have to get a voice inside your house, get a voice
00:24:14and start driving for the changes.
00:24:15If you start quarreling outside on the road, we will get nowhere.
00:24:19So whatever is the party's decision, wherever they put you, put you to sit down, put you
00:24:23to talk, they want you to talk, they want you to talk, you have a duty.
00:24:26You have a sworn duty to the constituents, to the constituency that we were elected to
00:24:30do.
00:24:31And I will continue to do, and I'm sure my colleagues will continue to do as well.
00:24:34But we have to have a positive outlook on it, because if I come here and cry, if I come
00:24:37here and cry this morning for everything that I feel is going wrong with me, what does that
00:24:41do to my constituents?
00:24:43What does that do to the party membership here?
00:24:45I will continue to have a very good forward outlook on our politics here in the United
00:24:50National Congress, our politics in Trinidad and Tobago, and I look forward to the United
00:24:55National Congress being put into government in October or November of 2025.
00:25:00So we have to prepare for that, and I'm prepared to do the work for it.
00:25:03All right.
00:25:04MP, please stay with us for a few more minutes.
00:25:06I won't detain you much longer, but please stay with us.
00:25:09We are going to a very short break, everybody.

00:28:53The ship hit rough water that day.
00:28:55Someone turned the bridge over to a captain named Chimbaz.
00:29:00My blood crawled.
00:29:02All right, so welcome back, everyone.
00:29:04So we are continuing our discussion with MP for Mayaro, Mr. Rushton Parry.
00:29:09Mr. Parry, thank you very much for staying with us.
00:29:11Mr. Parry, I just want to read from a newspaper report back in June, and it followed the internal elections in the UNC.
00:29:20And the political leader at that time described the party's internal elections as the worst she has experienced.
00:29:27She lamented that the campaign had been a battering one.
00:29:31At that time, you had serious minded persons in Trinidad and Tobago calling for both sides to have some level of discussion,
00:29:42to make amends so that you can go forward as one force.
00:29:48Have those talks happened at all?
00:29:50Is the political leader speaking to you?
00:29:52Is she speaking to the other four MPs?
00:29:58I don't know if she has communicated with any one of the four MPs.
00:30:01I can tell you I have had no one-on-one communication with the political leader since, I would say, in March.
00:30:10I think I made the call for the elections somewhere around the 20th of March, somewhere there.
00:30:16And I would have spoken to her about two weeks before that on the run-up to my call.
00:30:22During those conversations from early February to early March, I indicated to her that I was being called by several constituency executives
00:30:33to discuss matters of the party, things that they felt were not happening.
00:30:37They felt that they were being burnt out in all these meetings.
00:30:41It was a cost. Some councillors came up and said it's costing them for every time.
00:30:45You know, we have these meetings.
00:30:47And they felt a bit of discomfort and they thought that I was a good medium to take that information back to the political leader.
00:30:54They felt that either the people who they were talking to was not carrying the message or the political leader wasn't listening.
00:31:00So I made several attempts.
00:31:02I can tell you, Mrs. Possadby-Sessa, she's a night owler.
00:31:06She likes to work very, very late.
00:31:08We would have had communications via WhatsApp ongoing for many, many weeks in the run-up to my statement.
00:31:16Until at one point in time, I wrote a nine-page document compressing all the issues that were raised.
00:31:22I had about 35 meetings prior to that.
00:31:25And the day that I sent the document that highlighted all the issues and what we ought to do to prepare for a successful general election in 2025,
00:31:36that day all communications stopped for whatever reason.
00:31:41And since then to today, there have been no communication directly between Mrs. Possadby-Sessa and myself.
00:31:48You still believe in her leadership and you still believe that she can lead the party to victory in the next general election?
00:32:01If the party – I continue to maintain that leadership is not a one-man show.
00:32:06You have 18 members of the national executive who are there to be as a stop-and-check guide to any political leader.
00:32:16Mrs. Possadby-Sessa is still well-liked in the party.
00:32:19I do not believe that she's being advised appropriately in some of the decisions that are being made.
00:32:25These are communications that I go through the process as a member of the party.
00:32:30My UNC matters go through the chairman and the general secretary of the party.
00:32:35If we have parliamentary matters, I suspect when we caucus, whenever caucuses restart and we attend,
00:32:42I will deal with parliamentary matters with the political leader in terms of the scope of the legislation, how we vote, all those kind of things.
00:32:53I suspect we'll continue those things.
00:32:55But party matters, and I stress that party matters ought to be communicated internally and kept internally.
00:33:02I can tell you I have a series of issues.
00:33:05And the question about whether Mrs. Possadby-Sessa can take us to government in the current construct and format,
00:33:13my clear answer is no, because I do not believe that the advice that she's getting will take us to government.
00:33:19And that is what I will continue to champion for.
00:33:21Whether anybody sees that as being disrespectful or as being bad or rude, well, so be it.
00:33:28I am an investor. I am a shareholder in the United National Congress.
00:33:33And when you go to a shareholder's meeting, you stand up and you fight for your investment.
00:33:39And the best investment in this country still remains United National Congress.
00:33:43We need to straighten how our leadership operates.
00:33:45And I will use whatever mechanism internally to continue to campaign for that very respectfully,
00:33:52which we did during the campaign for the internal election.
00:33:55And, you know, you raise the point about the commentary that she made that it was a harsh and nasty election.
00:34:02But, I mean, I want to know if the country was asleep and believe that,
00:34:06because nothing that came out of the United Patriots platform from members of my slate,
00:34:11because I was very clear to every one of them.
00:34:14I'm not babysitting any one of y'all.
00:34:16We have a philosophy. This is our philosophy.
00:34:18We are here to talk on party issues.
00:34:20We spoke on party issues.
00:34:23We had no character assassination.
00:34:25Now, our politics have a little bit of peacock.
00:34:27If we do it in the parliament and on the platform as well, you're peacock for a couple of minutes or two.
00:34:31I mean, I did it. Dr. Rudal Munilal made a lot of commentary about me.
00:34:35I responded to him in one or two little quips and so on.
00:34:37But we stuck to the matter of the party and the internal system.
00:34:41So, I don't know what is fallacy about, you know, how we came out on attack and we attack colleagues.
00:34:46I saw in the media that it was atrocious and disrespectful.
00:34:50I want any media house or anybody who followed our campaign from the slate of the United Patriots to find one line where I was disrespectful.
00:34:58Anybody on my slate was disrespectful to the political leader or any colleague in a way that would have brought us into disrepute.
00:35:05I can't recall and I can tell you for myself, I did not do it.
00:35:08MP, I have one more question and I have one more minute really.
00:35:12But following the election results, the internal elections of the UNC, there was talk about you forming a new political entity
00:35:24or you having talks with other politicians and other political parties.
00:35:30What's the status at this time?
00:35:33Are you speaking to other political parties?
00:35:35Other political parties are speaking to you?
00:35:38Because you say you remain committed to the UNC.
00:35:41Yes, well, committed to the UNC doesn't mean to shut up.
00:35:45Committed to the UNC, during the campaign, I campaigned that the UNC must talk to everybody.
00:35:53And I made a joke out of it that we must speak to the good, the bad and the mad.
00:35:58Because anybody who has a contribution to make to national development must be heard.
00:36:04Now, that being said, that issue about UPTT, that's red herring.
00:36:09Somebody's going to make mischief, I can tell you from my case.
00:36:13And I can tell you on behalf of the other four MPs, nobody is involved in the forming of any other political party.
00:36:20Dr. Williams made sure that he created a society which is a two-party system.
00:36:26There's no room for third parties or splinter parties to get into government,
00:36:31unless they can assemble themselves and become the second party.
00:36:36I don't know if we can do that in 18 months, or it can be done at all.
00:36:40I can tell you that my commitment remains with the United National Congress.
00:36:44The issue about talking to political parties, every single citizen who has my number,
00:36:49since the day we lost the election has been calling me.
00:36:52Leaders of political parties have been calling me to find out views, to find out how we can work together.
00:36:57I say, look, I cannot represent or I cannot speak on behalf of the UNC. There's a leadership.
00:37:02I can tell you my view, my personal view, my personal view, that we have to talk to everyone.
00:37:08We have to find common philosophy, and we need to come under the umbrella of the United National Congress
00:37:13and take government from the People's National Movement to save this country.
00:37:16So the answer to your question is yes, I am talking, I am listening,
00:37:20but I am not committed to anybody else or any other organization outside of the UNC,
00:37:25because that is the party that I still believe in the philosophy that I joined 10 years ago.
00:37:29I have no problem with my party. I have problems with my leader's decision from time to time,
00:37:34and I will continue to challenge those things.
00:37:36Yes, Member of Parliament for Mayaro, Rushton Parry, it's always a pleasure speaking with you, sir.
00:37:40Thank you very much. We do appreciate it. Bye for now.
00:37:44Thank you for having me.
00:37:45All right, so we are going to a very short break, everybody. We're coming back.
00:37:51We don't know. Captain, you tell me what to do.
00:38:16Wait now. Is little Ulysser in there?
00:38:19There's one bottle, I just want it.
00:38:21Small thing can lead to big thing.
00:38:23Like flooding.
00:38:24Bring in rats, roaches and flies.
00:38:27Yeah, I don't want to get sick.
00:38:29We can make a difference by...
00:38:31By planting trees.
00:38:33Using reusable bottles.
00:38:35And baths.
00:38:36Keeping our country clean.

00:57:22Good morning, I am Anselm Gibbs with a news update.
00:57:27Rural communities which may be seeing an uptick in crime can expect to see more policing activities.
00:57:34This from the Minister in the Ministry of National Security.
00:57:38The plan is already afoot to have more police in those areas.
00:57:43And yes, it will assist in the decrease in drug and illegal activities in those areas
00:57:49because the presence of the police and other members of the security apparatus will act as a deterrent.
00:57:56A Clarkston Bay man wants help from the relevant authorities.
00:58:02As he says, he is frustrated over continuous flooding at his home.
00:58:07I want the cooperatives to come and remove everything from the river bank.
00:58:13At least 15 to 20 feet away from the river bank so the excavator can come and clean this river
00:58:18so that the people in the environment won't have to go through this.
00:58:21It's losses, it's losses. Who's helping me now? Who's coming to give me something?
00:58:26And in the weather forecast, both islands can expect fair to partly cloudy conditions
00:58:33with occasional showers and a 60% chance of an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon
00:58:40mainly over western and hilly areas.
00:58:43Tonight will be settled despite a few lingering showers.
00:58:47Temperatures are expected to climb to 34 degrees Celsius in Trinidad and 32 in Tobago.
00:58:54Seas will be slight to moderate with waves up to 1.5 meters in open waters
00:59:00and below 1 meter in sheltered areas.

01:02:06So the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago
01:02:08will host its first Pan Jazz on the Plaza,
01:02:11a wine-and-cheese-inclusive event
01:02:13as part of the bank's 60th anniversary on Sunday, September 22nd.
01:02:18To tell us more about the event,
01:02:20we are now joined by Delise Francis, External Relations Officer,
01:02:24and Janelle Barker, External Relations Technician.
01:02:28Ladies, thank you very much for coming this morning.
01:02:30Thank you for having us.
01:02:31Of course, well, Janelle, let's get right into the discussion.
01:02:34What is Pan Jazz on the Plaza?
01:02:36Okay, thank you, Marlon.
01:02:38So Pan Jazz on the Plaza is a major corporate social responsibility event for 2024.
01:02:45This year, as you just mentioned, the bank is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
01:02:49And in keeping with the celebrations,
01:02:51we have decided to host a wine-and-cheese-inclusive event
01:02:55showcasing top major local talent,
01:02:58which will help raise funds for charities.
01:03:02The charities that we have chosen
01:03:04are the Alzheimer's Association of Trinidad and Tobago
01:03:08and the National Center for Persons with Disabilities.
01:03:11Yeah, well, here's what Delise,
01:03:14let's talk a little bit about some of the people
01:03:16who are going to be performing at the Pan Jazz on the Plaza.
01:03:20Yes, so we have a very exciting show planned.
01:03:23We have, well, it's Pan Jazz, so we're merging the two.
01:03:26We have Trinidad All-Stars.
01:03:29We have a lot of followers from Trinidad All-Stars.
01:03:33We also have Dean Galston and Sweet Bread, the band.
01:03:36So that covers the Pan aspect.
01:03:38We also have the Jazz.
01:03:39We have Pornhub Bigfoot and her band.
01:03:41We have the amazing Kay Allen and the EFX band.
01:03:45We also have Stacey Sobers.
01:03:47And if you've ever heard some of these performers,
01:03:50you know what a treat you have in store.
01:03:52So we have a very exciting show planned.
01:03:54And to tell you a little bit more about the event,
01:03:57we have, well, you said it's wine and cheese, right?
01:04:00So Chef Khaled Mohammed of Shaw
01:04:02will be curating all the finger food
01:04:04and a wide assortment of exquisite cheeses.
01:04:07And we also have a wide variety of both red and white wines
01:04:12that you can choose from.
01:04:13Sparkling as well.
01:04:14Sparkling wines as well.
01:04:15And if you're not a wine lover,
01:04:17because we know some people not too much into wines,
01:04:19we have a paid bar that you can, you know, buy your drinks.
01:04:23We have a fully stocked bar.
01:04:24As well as eats will be on sale.
01:04:26Yeah, we have food which will be available for sale.
01:04:28Yeah.
01:04:29Yeah.
01:04:30Yeah.
01:04:31I want to speak a little bit, ladies,
01:04:33because I think that this is very, very important.
01:04:36And Janelle, you did touch on it.
01:04:39So you are raising funds for the Alzheimer's Association
01:04:43of Trinidad and Tobago
01:04:44and the National Center for Persons with Disabilities.
01:04:47I want to speak about the importance of raising funds
01:04:52for these two organizations.
01:04:54So, yes, we can talk about the wine and cheese and so on,
01:04:57but there's a serious side to this thing.
01:05:00Yeah, there is.
01:05:01Okay, so the bank strives to be a good corporate citizen.
01:05:05We are guided by our corporate social responsibility policy,
01:05:10which fosters and encourages employees
01:05:13to engage with community services
01:05:16We also encourage our employees to help support causes
01:05:23which will alleviate circumstances for persons
01:05:27who are less fortunate in our communities.
01:05:30The proceeds from this event will help support the charities
01:05:35and their causes.
01:05:37It also broadens the role of the central bank
01:05:43in supporting cultural areas
01:05:45and the contribution to disadvantaged communities.
01:05:49And this is in keeping with our current strategic plan.
01:05:54Yeah.
01:05:55And I just want to add to that,
01:05:57when we talk about Alzheimer's Association of Trinidad and Tobago,
01:06:00September actually recognizes Alzheimer's Month
01:06:04and their caregivers,
01:06:05which actually occurs on the 21st of September.
01:06:07So we are having our event on the 22nd.
01:06:10So we're asking people to come out and really support these causes
01:06:13because we really need to show some more encouragement too
01:06:16and raise funds for organizations that are in need.
01:06:20Yeah, and also raise awareness for these organizations.
01:06:24Yeah, and that is very, very important.
01:06:27So is this event for everyone?
01:06:30It's for everyone.
01:06:32Everyone.
01:06:33Like you could bring from the youngest to the oldest.
01:06:37Anybody who's interested, yes.
01:06:38We will have seats for persons who aren't able to stand
01:06:41or who prefer not to stand.
01:06:43Yeah.
01:06:44And we'll have enough dancing room for those who are more inclined to dance.
01:06:47Yes.
01:06:48And when Neil and Marcy Trinidad All-Stars opens the event,
01:06:52I think the dancer will start from there.
01:06:54Will start from the time you enter.
01:06:56Yeah.
01:06:57Let's get a little deeper into the performances here
01:07:03because while some people may be familiar with some of these artists
01:07:09and performers on the program, some people may not be, right?
01:07:14So if we're speaking about Vonnette, I mean, I know about Vonnette
01:07:17and Dane and Kaye Alleyne and Stacey.
01:07:21But for people who don't know what to expect, read these performances.
01:07:26Let's speak a little bit about that.
01:07:28Okay, well, we have our social media campaign ongoing.
01:07:31So you can check out the Central Bank, all our social media.
01:07:34We have Facebook, Instagram.
01:07:36And we have it running from, well, we started already.
01:07:39So every day you'll get a little bit more information about the event.
01:07:43So if you're not too familiar, I mean, there's YouTube, there's all these things.
01:07:47You could just do a little Google search and you could find out more
01:07:50and it would entice you more to come.
01:07:52Yeah, you see the ladies are teasing you all this morning.
01:07:55They are teasing you.
01:07:57That's what they're doing.
01:07:58As well, Marlon, we have secured parking at the Nipdeck car park.
01:08:02So you wouldn't have to think about your car getting flooded out if it rains,
01:08:06which we hope it doesn't.
01:08:08But we are offering secured car park at the Nipdeck car park,
01:08:10which is on Edward Street.
01:08:12Yeah, or even wrecked.
01:08:14Right, patrons?
01:08:16Where can people get tickets?
01:08:18All right, they can get it at the Central Bank.
01:08:20You can come in physically to get it.
01:08:22You can also call any one of our committee members.
01:08:25My number is 791-3654.
01:08:27So you can get it via any.
01:08:29And if you go on our social media, you will see all the other numbers listed.
01:08:32We also have a sort of delivery service being offered.
01:08:35Yes, for corporate entities.
01:08:38Yeah, so you can contact us and we will take your information
01:08:42and we'll have tickets delivered to you and your organization.
01:08:45Or you can also call the bank at 621-2288
01:08:49if you require information or you would like to purchase tickets.
01:08:53And this is during working hours, eh?
01:08:55Yes.
01:08:56Just remember that, you all.
01:08:57All right, but here's one.
01:08:59I want to take you to the day, Sunday, 22nd September,
01:09:04Eric Williams Plaza, right?
01:09:06Yes.
01:09:07And it's from 4 o'clock to 8 o'clock.
01:09:10Take us through those hours there.
01:09:12What can people expect?
01:09:14All right, you want to take this one?
01:09:16Give us the program.
01:09:17Okay, so I know the program is going to start off with Massey Trinidad All-Stars
01:09:21and then we are going to break it with a little DJ music
01:09:25and then we are going to, you'll get a lineup from the entertainers
01:09:28from Vaughan and Bigford to the end.
01:09:30So we don't have our specific orders yet, that has not been completed,
01:09:34but I assure you it is going to be an epic event.
01:09:37Yeah.
01:09:38Delisa, anything else you'd like to add?
01:09:39I will say that you can expect a very nice environment
01:09:44because we know we're decorating, we're celebrating 60 years,
01:09:47that's something to be recognized.
01:09:48So from the time you enter the venue, you would feel like, yes.
01:09:51I am in the Central Bank.
01:09:53I'm at the Central Bank and I'm happy that I'm supporting these organizations
01:09:57and I'm getting an enjoyable show.
01:09:59Yes.
01:10:00Janelle?
01:10:01Yes, so I would like to reiterate again, please support this cause.
01:10:04It's a cause that is going to assist people who are less fortunate
01:10:08and who really need the support from Trinidad and Tobago.
01:10:11So I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of people attending this event
01:10:14on Sunday, the 22nd of September.
01:10:16Yes.
01:10:17I'm looking forward to seeing you as well.
01:10:19You as well.
01:10:20I'm coming down.
01:10:21Call us.
01:10:22Dressed to impress.
01:10:23Yes.
01:10:24We're coming to drink wine and eat cheese and all.
01:10:26Ladies, it was a pleasure speaking with you all this morning.
01:10:29We wish you all the best for your event.
01:10:31Thank you.
01:10:32Thank you for having us.

01:14:34All right, so welcome back, everyone.
01:14:36So the Ministry of Health has launched a toll-free
01:14:3924-hour hotline for noncommunicable diseases.
01:14:43We are now joined by the director of the
01:14:46Noncommunicable Diseases Unit at the Ministry of Health,
01:14:49Dr. Maria Clapperton.
01:14:51Dr. Clapperton, thank you very much for joining us this morning.
01:14:53It's always good to see and speak with you, doctor.
01:14:58Good morning, good morning.
01:14:59Thank you for having me.
01:15:00Of course.
01:15:01Well, doctor, let's speak about this hotline.
01:15:05Why was there a need for this hotline, one,
01:15:09and what sort of service or services
01:15:12are being provided by this hotline?
01:15:18Well, in terms of noncommunicable diseases,
01:15:21this hotline is part of a wider initiative
01:15:24known as the Diabetes and Hypertension
01:15:26Self-Management Initiative.
01:15:28And as you are aware, the ministry's strategy has been
01:15:32to empower and encourage members of the population
01:15:35to take ownership of their health.
01:15:38So with this initiative, we are...
01:15:47All right, doctor, I don't know if you're hearing me,
01:15:49but we have lost your audio.
01:15:51Yeah?
01:15:52So we are going to try to address that.
01:15:55Of course, we are discussing the NCD hotline
01:15:59of the Ministry of Health.
01:16:01And we do have on the line director
01:16:03of the Noncommunicable Diseases Unit
01:16:05at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Maria Clapperton.
01:16:08In the meantime, you can take this number.
01:16:11That is a very, very important number
01:16:14for persons who are inflicted right now
01:16:18with any type of NCD.
01:16:21So we will continue our discussion
01:16:23as long as we do make that connection again
01:16:26with Dr. Clapperton.
01:16:28Yeah?
01:16:29Dr. Clapperton, are you hearing me?
01:16:32Doctor?
01:16:33Good morning.
01:16:34All right.
01:16:35I think that's...
01:16:36Yes.
01:16:37Are you hearing me?
01:16:38Yes, I'm hearing you.
01:16:39It's only just like the advertisement.
01:16:40But yes, we're hearing you, doctor.
01:16:42Doctor, could you please continue
01:16:44the point that you were making?
01:16:48Yes.
01:16:49So this is part of a wider initiative
01:16:51for diabetes and hypertension self-management initiative.
01:16:54I'm sure you are aware of our TT Moves campaign,
01:16:57which was started many, many years ago,
01:16:59led by the Honorable Minister,
01:17:01Mr. Terence de Alting himself.
01:17:03And there were three key messages
01:17:05with our TT Moves campaign, which continue.
01:17:08And that is to encourage persons
01:17:10to increase their daily intake of water,
01:17:13increase their daily intake of fruits and vegetables,
01:17:16and to move more.
01:17:18And we have added a fourth, which is to know your numbers.
01:17:21So we want to encourage persons
01:17:23to know what your blood pressure numbers are,
01:17:25know what your blood sugar numbers are,
01:17:27know what your cholesterol numbers are.
01:17:30And as part of this self-management initiative,
01:17:33we want to empower persons
01:17:35to be aware of their health numbers.
01:17:38And with the support of this NCD hotline,
01:17:41should you have checked your blood pressure
01:17:43and your blood sugar and you have any questions
01:17:45as to what those numbers mean,
01:17:47you can call and speak to one of our healthcare professionals
01:17:51who can give you this support and this advice
01:17:54so that you can better understand and manage your numbers.
01:17:57And this is not specific to only persons
01:18:00who have already been diagnosed with diabetes
01:18:03or hypertension, high blood pressure.
01:18:06If you have checked your number,
01:18:08you have gone by a neighbor, a friend, or to any institution
01:18:12and you have any questions at all,
01:18:14you feel free to call the hotline 800-4-NCD
01:18:18and you can have your concerns addressed.
01:18:20Yeah. And you know, Dr. Clapperton,
01:18:22it's not the first time that we are speaking about NCDs.
01:18:26In fact, I think that the Ministry of Health
01:18:29has launched really a frontal attack
01:18:32as it relates to NCDs in Trinidad and Tobago,
01:18:35and the ministry has spoken about the impact
01:18:37that it is having on the citizenry.
01:18:40What is the data telling us, doctor,
01:18:43about NCDs in Trinidad and Tobago?
01:18:48Well, in terms of previous data, mortality data,
01:18:52reported through the Central Statistical Office in 2018,
01:18:55I'll start there,
01:18:57the top leading causes of NCD-related deaths
01:19:00in Trinidad and Tobago,
01:19:02number one being cardiovascular diseases,
01:19:04mainly heart attacks,
01:19:06number two, diabetes,
01:19:07number three, cancer,
01:19:09and number four, strokes.
01:19:11You know, looking at that information
01:19:14and incorporating it into our strategy
01:19:17by addressing, in the first instance,
01:19:19diabetes and hypertension,
01:19:21which are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases,
01:19:24heart attacks and strokes,
01:19:25we are tackling three out of the top four leading causes
01:19:30of NCD mortality in Trinidad and Tobago,
01:19:33and we are doing this also with a strategy
01:19:36that is rooted in primary healthcare and prevention.
01:19:39Yeah.
01:19:40Is there a particular demographic
01:19:43where you're seeing this is most prevalent?
01:19:48Well, in relation to the various illnesses,
01:19:52the prevalence varies, for example,
01:19:55in terms of ethnicity.
01:19:57So, in terms of hypertension,
01:20:00the Afro-Trinidadian population tend to be at greater risk,
01:20:04whereas, for example, with diabetes,
01:20:06you tend to have a higher prevalence
01:20:08in persons of the Indo-Trinidadian population.
01:20:12But nevertheless, all strategies,
01:20:15because our population overall is at high risk,
01:20:18just looking at our genetics,
01:20:20our cultural practices,
01:20:23our dietary habits, you know.
01:20:26So, this is mass sensitization,
01:20:28in the first instance,
01:20:29to all members of Trinidad and Tobago,
01:20:32so that you can be aware of your health
01:20:35and take ownership of it.
01:20:37Dr. Clapperton, any data for doglers like me?
01:20:40It's just a joke, Dr. Clapperton.
01:20:42It's just a joke.
01:20:43Well, currently, it's not a joke.
01:20:45People take it as a joke,
01:20:46because remember, in 2024,
01:20:49we conducted the STEP survey.
01:20:52So, we are currently in the process of analyzing that data.
01:20:55So, we look forward to see what the numbers show,
01:20:58because this national STEP survey
01:21:00tells us about the risk factors
01:21:02for noncommunicable diseases
01:21:04that may be prevalent within our population.
01:21:07Yeah, thank you very much, Dr.
01:21:09I await that data.
01:21:10But let's speak about the importance, again,
01:21:13about self-management
01:21:15and the benefits of self-management
01:21:18to an individual in managing NCDs.
01:21:23Right, so in terms of screening,
01:21:26we want to encourage persons,
01:21:28the message is very simple,
01:21:29do not wait until you feel unwell
01:21:31to seek care and find yourself by a doctor.
01:21:34We want you to come in early while you are well.
01:21:37You have your annual checkups.
01:21:39Build a relationship with your physician,
01:21:41because if you are well
01:21:43and anything is detected on your annual checkups,
01:21:46then you have more time for intervention and management
01:21:50and greater chances of recovery, a cure,
01:21:54in the event of whatever may be diagnosed
01:21:56at that point in time.
01:21:57It should also be noted
01:21:59that hypertension is an asymptomatic illness.
01:22:02You feel well, there are no symptoms
01:22:04unless your blood pressures are really, really high,
01:22:07and you may require hospitalization
01:22:09at that point in time.
01:22:11So, too, there are changes
01:22:14that will be taking place internally
01:22:15with your cholesterol levels,
01:22:17and you will not know unless you check these things.
01:22:19So we really want to encourage you
01:22:21to get familiar with your health numbers
01:22:23and to have your checkups early, right?
01:22:26So prevention will always be better than cure.
01:22:28That is the message here.
01:22:30And for those who have already been diagnosed,
01:22:34you know, the self-management part of it
01:22:38would be to,
01:22:39even though you have already been diagnosed,
01:22:42utilizing a machine
01:22:43that you may have access to at home.
01:22:45You know, you can use this to monitor
01:22:48and check your readings.
01:22:49In compliance with your medication
01:22:51and the advice of your physician,
01:22:53we encourage you to document those readings.
01:22:55And the Ministry of Health NCD unit,
01:22:58we would have produced a Know Your Numbers booklet
01:23:01that, in it, has a diary
01:23:03where persons can document
01:23:05their blood pressure readings
01:23:06and blood sugar readings.
01:23:08It's available on the ministry website, Sock Coffee.
01:23:10You can download it
01:23:12and write in your blood pressure readings
01:23:14and your blood sugar readings,
01:23:15and it also has information
01:23:17about diabetes and hypertension.
01:23:18And this is, it may be very simple,
01:23:21but it's a very important tool
01:23:23because you can go to your physician appointment
01:23:27with this diary and collection of your readings,
01:23:30and your doctor has more information
01:23:33in terms of the trends
01:23:34of your blood pressure readings
01:23:36and your blood sugar readings,
01:23:37and is in a better position
01:23:38to adjust your medication
01:23:40and advise you accordingly.
01:23:42Yeah. Dr. Clapperton,
01:23:43I just have about a minute again.
01:23:44Any additional information
01:23:45you'd like to share with us?
01:23:46Before you leave us this morning?
01:23:48So, this is a toll-free, 24-7 hotline
01:23:52that is made available to you.
01:23:53We are bringing healthcare services closer to you.
01:23:56800-4NCD.
01:23:58That's 800-4623.
01:24:00We have physicians available
01:24:02to take your call
01:24:03and to provide you with the necessary support.
01:24:05So, it is a pilot initiative.
01:24:07Make use of it.
01:24:08Yeah. Dr. Clapperton,
01:24:09it's always good to speak with you.
01:24:11Thank you very much for the tips this morning

01:25:58Mary has bills to pay
01:26:00and takes a chance
01:26:01parking in front of the building
01:26:02at the no parking sign.
01:26:04Mary returns to her car
01:26:06and this is what happens.
01:26:15Mary decides to call
01:26:17when she's five minutes away
01:26:18to let her daughter know
01:26:20that she is close by.
01:26:21But Mary forgot one thing.
01:26:30After two tickets,
01:26:32Mary just isn't paying attention
01:26:34to her speed.
01:26:51Don't be like Mary.
01:26:53Obey the laws of the road.
01:26:55A message from the TTPS.
01:27:20This is how we play.
01:27:22We gon' represent
01:27:23and show them who we stand for.
01:27:25Let's turn it up
01:27:26and light the flame.
01:27:27All right, everybody.
01:27:28So, welcome back.
01:27:29It's time now
01:27:30for our CPL segment, all right?
01:27:33So, we are going to,
01:27:34over the next few minutes,
01:27:36we are going to be having
01:27:38a discussion concerning the CPL,
01:27:40what you would have seen thus far,
01:27:42what happened last night,
01:27:43what we have seen
01:27:44concerning the WCPL.
01:27:46So, yeah, everything CPL
01:27:48we are going to be discussing now.
01:27:49But here's what.
01:27:50Let's take in this
01:27:52very interesting video.
01:27:54I understand it's behind the scenes
01:27:56of how the TKR, the men's team,
01:27:59yeah, how they warm up
01:28:01and how they prepare for matches.
01:28:04Let's take in that now.
01:28:06Look what's happening, sir.
01:28:08He's right there.
01:28:11Hey.
01:28:12This.
01:28:14Bravo.
01:28:16Thank you, man.
01:28:17Let's go.
01:28:32That looks like a fun,
01:28:35a fun, how do you say it,
01:28:38preparation for the game there.
01:28:40And I'm sure that, you know,
01:28:42all of this adds to
01:28:45the motivation of our players
01:28:48when it comes to cricket
01:28:50and I'm sure other sports, right?
01:28:53So, we are going to,
01:28:55as I told you earlier,
01:28:57we are going to be discussing
01:28:59a lot more about the CPL.
01:29:01So, joining us this morning
01:29:02is former West Indies women's player,
01:29:04now turned commentator, Stacy-Ann King.
01:29:07Now, Stacy-Ann scored just under 1,900 runs
01:29:11in her 161 matches
01:29:13for the Windies women
01:29:14and was a part of the 2016
01:29:16Women's T20 World Cup winning team.
01:29:19Now, these days we can see
01:29:21and hear Stacy-Ann in the commentary booth
01:29:24and she's here, of course,
01:29:25to give her take on this year's
01:29:27CPL tournament thus far.
01:29:30Good morning, Stacy-Ann.
01:29:31Thank you very much for joining us this morning.
01:29:35Good morning and thank you for having me.
01:29:37Of course.
01:29:38Well, Stacy-Ann, let's look at,
01:29:40I want to look at so many things this morning,
01:29:42Stacy-Ann, because I'm sure
01:29:44that you have been taking some glances
01:29:47as to see what is happening
01:29:49with the men's game
01:29:51and we just had the women's game.
01:29:54So, let's, give us an analysis.
01:29:56Give us your running commentary this morning
01:29:59as to what you would have seen thus far.
01:30:04Well, we've actually just completed
01:30:06the Marcy Women's CPL Barbados Royals
01:30:09being the champions of that.
01:30:11As well as the West Indies Senior Women's Team.
01:30:16Go ahead, Stacy-Ann.
01:30:17We're hearing you.
01:30:20As well as the West Indies Women's Team
01:30:22has been announced for that group that's coming up.
01:30:28All right.
01:30:29Here's what, Stacy-Ann,
01:30:30we are going to,
01:30:31let's work out those issues studio
01:30:34so that we can hear Stacy-Ann quite clearly.
01:30:38All right.
01:30:39I think that we're having some difficulty there
01:30:41but we're going to work out that.
01:30:43All right.
01:30:44So, of course, this is the CPL segment
01:30:46and we are discussing everything CPL.
01:30:49Yes, Stacy-Ann King,
01:30:50she's a former West Indies cricketer
01:30:52and we'll hear from her very, very soon.
01:30:55I think that we have made connection
01:30:57with Stacy-Ann again.
01:30:58Stacy-Ann, good morning
01:30:59and thank you very much for staying with us.
01:31:03Yes, please, I'm here.
01:31:04All right.
01:31:05Can you hear me better?
01:31:06Yes, I can hear you better, Stacy-Ann.
01:31:08So, Stacy-Ann, you continue, yeah,
01:31:11about what you have seen so far.
01:31:15Yes.
01:31:16So, again, Marcy Women's CPL,
01:31:20Barbados Royals being champions of that tournament
01:31:24and, of course,
01:31:25a West Indies women's team being named for the T20
01:31:28will be played in Dubai, United Arab Emirates next month.
01:31:33I think it's,
01:31:34that's from the women's perspective
01:31:35and I think it's a really good setup
01:31:37in terms of the team
01:31:38that has been selected,
01:31:39some youths as well as some senior players
01:31:42for that experience part of things.
01:31:46Women's CPL,
01:31:47I mean, last night,
01:31:48I'm not sure if you stayed up
01:31:50or how many of our fans stayed up
01:31:52to have a look at TKR last night,
01:31:54but that was a blinder of a match by TKR
01:32:00to pull off that win in the last over.
01:32:03Yeah.
01:32:04And, you know, Stacy-Ann,
01:32:06I mean, what has been striking me,
01:32:09even with the WCPL games,
01:32:12is that they have been really nail-biting performances
01:32:18and the level of excitement
01:32:20is a very, very high standard.
01:32:22The passion that we would have seen from the women's game
01:32:27is also of a high standard.
01:32:29And I think that maybe,
01:32:31because, you see,
01:32:32I think that what we do have
01:32:34is that we usually compare the women's game
01:32:37to the men's game.
01:32:39But to me,
01:32:41as someone who has really started looking
01:32:45at the women's game,
01:32:47a lot of passion,
01:32:48a lot of excitement,
01:32:49a lot of expertise,
01:32:50a very high standard.
01:32:54Yeah, most definitely.
01:32:55I mean, to see the young players,
01:32:58especially like Samara Ramnath,
01:32:59who's just 16 years of age,
01:33:01play at that level,
01:33:02as well as Ashmini Munesar,
01:33:04who would have represented West Indies under-19
01:33:09and captain at that inaugural TD20 Women's World Cup.
01:33:13To see that just come through the ranks
01:33:14and just be able to get an opportunity
01:33:16to play alongside Ashika Pandya,
01:33:19Jameeman Rodriques,
01:33:20some of the greats of India Cricket
01:33:22and the international players,
01:33:24like Jess Jonathan, for example,
01:33:26Chamari Atapattu.
01:33:28I mean, to rub shoulders
01:33:29and share the same dressing room
01:33:31with some of those players.
01:33:32I think it's a good building block
01:33:35for these young players,
01:33:37as well as for us in the Caribbean,
01:33:39to get to know who our young players
01:33:41are coming through the ranks.
01:33:43These opportunities need to be created
01:33:46a bit more, I'd probably say,
01:33:47because we have an under-19 World Cup
01:33:49in January or February next year as well.
01:33:52And this is kind of what you want
01:33:54from your franchise tournaments.
01:33:56When you have a franchise tournament,
01:33:58you want to be able to have your players
01:34:00come through those ranks.
01:34:02I mean, India does it with Women's IPL.
01:34:05Australia does it with Big Bash,
01:34:07Women's Big Bash.
01:34:09England does it with the 100s.
01:34:10So we need to have more tournaments
01:34:12like these so that we can unearth
01:34:14the future female West Indian cricketers
01:34:17as it might be.
01:34:18But you know, I think that the game,
01:34:22it's really going from strength to strength.
01:34:25And I want to just touch on your experience
01:34:31with the game over the years.
01:34:33And I was just looking at some
01:34:35of your achievements, Stacey,
01:34:37and very impressive, you know.
01:34:38Yeah, 1,900 runs.
01:34:40That's not an easy task, you know.
01:34:43Yeah.
01:34:44So, but let's look at the development
01:34:47of the game.
01:34:48Let's look at the opportunities
01:34:51that we're seeing.
01:34:52And it would seem that the opportunities,
01:34:56it's just, it's at a fast pace
01:35:00because you move from one tournament
01:35:02and then you get, you prepare yourself
01:35:05for another tournament.
01:35:06But Stacey-Anne, just ponder on those things for now.
01:35:10We must go to a very short break.
01:35:11Please stay with us, Stacey-Anne.
01:35:12We're coming back, everybody.
01:35:14This year, we have to be the winner.

01:39:36All right, everybody, so welcome back.
01:39:38So we are continuing our discussion, really, the CPL,
01:39:41with Stacey-Ann King, former West Indies cricketer.
01:39:44So, Stacey-Ann, what I was really saying, I was thinking to myself,
01:39:48you may have to dust off your bat and return
01:39:51because of the many opportunities we are seeing in international cricket for women.
01:39:58We're seeing of the opportunities here.
01:40:00We're seeing so many women, as you alluded to the fact,
01:40:03so many young women are part of the game and playing at a tender age.
01:40:10I mean, 16, that's a very young age, but the opportunities are there.
01:40:16Most definitely.
01:40:17I think, for me, I'm just happy where I am at in terms of I am commentary.
01:40:23I still do represent UV Women's Cricket Club.
01:40:26I still do play cricket, but I still try to do a bit of mentoring as well
01:40:31with some of the young players, of course.
01:40:34But, yeah, there are different avenues.
01:40:36I mean, Anissa Mohamed, she's more into the coaching part of it.
01:40:41I mean, I'm more into the commentary part of it.
01:40:43Marissa Aguilera, former captain of that West Indies women's team.
01:40:47She is into management.
01:40:49Brittany Cooper, who's into coaching.
01:40:51So there are different fields that, you know, I think people,
01:40:55players, especially your former players, are interested in.
01:40:58And, you know, we just kind of moved into which avenue sort of suited us the best.
01:41:04Yeah, I get the feeling.
01:41:06But it's actually good that the young players coming through can see that,
01:41:11you know, there are still avenues.
01:41:13There are different avenues that they themselves can fall into.
01:41:16You can still stop, play cricket and still travel the world.
01:41:19Like, I guess I am doing as it is because, I mean, it's an honour
01:41:23to still be travelling to like New Zealand and Australia to do commentary.
01:41:28And still give a part or give back to the women's game.
01:41:32Yeah, I think that there is a good level of succession planning taking place in the women's game.
01:41:42Because I think that sometimes, Stacey-Anne, and I'm talking in a general sense,
01:41:48you know, sometimes people get so caught up in what is happening right now
01:41:53that they do not think about succession planning.
01:41:56And I think that we're seeing that level of succession planning in the game.
01:42:01But what I want to say, Stacey-Anne, is that while I'm sure that you would agree
01:42:06that a number of developments and successes in the women's game,
01:42:13but I think that there is still need for the fan base to grow a little more.
01:42:20And there is still need for that strong support.
01:42:24Because I think that what we would have seen during the women's game, re the crowds,
01:42:33I think that there is still need for much improvement and support.
01:42:40Yeah, most definitely. I think we possibly just may need to take a page out of,
01:42:48say, an India or an England book and have more specials when it comes to families coming to cricket.
01:42:56Because if you have a girl child that's playing cricket, obviously mom is going to be there,
01:43:00brother may tag along, dad may tag along.
01:43:03So what I think they did in IPL is put tickets, if a female is coming,
01:43:09or females are coming, the male has to pay.
01:43:11So the tickets is not as much for the females, but the males will have to pay the full price.
01:43:18We need to find ways, because I was blown out when I saw that final match
01:43:24between TKR and Barbados Royals to see the crowds that were there.
01:43:28But that was only because they opened it up and said it's free entry.
01:43:35That's kind of the cause that you see internationally for women's cricket.
01:43:39So we just need to find a way to tap into, because we have clubs,
01:43:44we have local tournaments in Trinidad and throughout the Caribbean.
01:43:47So with nine female clubs in Trinidad and Tobago, if you say to those teams,
01:43:53we're giving you all packages to come to support these women's games,
01:43:59I think that in itself can be an encouragement to get more female club involvement
01:44:06and more family and friends as well to come out to support the women's game.
01:44:10And that's the only how it can grow.
01:44:12I mean, it takes a lot for TV production, stuff like that costs money.
01:44:17And therefore, of course, you need to sort of make back or see some sort of revenue come back.
01:44:23So I just think maybe there are a number of things that can be looked into,
01:44:28as I mentioned, trying to get those female clubs involved, have packages.
01:44:34You need to find a way, literally just need to find a way,
01:44:37because we've seen that women's cricket is growing.
01:44:40It's now standalone. The Women's World Cup is standalone
01:44:43because of the fact that they believe that the women's game has basically built itself.
01:44:50So I think we just need to go to the drawing board and probably get more former players involved
01:44:56as well as those questions and suggestions as to how can we grow with women's cricket.
01:45:03All right. Stacey-Anne, please stay with us. We must go to a very short break again.
01:45:08We are discussing CPL, everybody, including the WCPL. We'll be right back.
01:45:26CPL, it's CPL time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time, time,

01:49:26All right, so welcome back everyone. So we are continuing our discussion with Stacey-Ann
01:49:31King about the CPL. Stacey-Ann, thank you very much for staying with us. We just have about a
01:49:36minute again, Stacey-Ann. But as you look at the men's tournament in the next
01:49:43few days and the current standings, what do you see?
01:49:50I mean, it's good to see. Last night, I had to stay up like many of us around the Caribbean
01:49:56to just have a look at what was happening between St Lucia Kings, who put a total of 187 for six,
01:50:03and then TKR coming and make that with five balls remaining. I mean, that game alone
01:50:11just made you see why it's the biggest party in sports and why basically you need to be there or
01:50:17just tune in whenever necessary. Ghana-Amazon Warriors, of course, at the top of the table. TKR
01:50:22with that win. They've now moved to third position and Barbados Royals second. There's still some
01:50:29really exciting games coming up, but that home advantage sort of thing, you kind of want to win
01:50:34your matches whilst you're at home. But I think that what we've been seeing generally from the
01:50:39tournament, it has been exceptional for me from a West Indian perspective, especially to see top
01:50:46scorers like Kyle Mears, in the wicked spirit, Kishmoti second on that list of top wicked takers.
01:50:55For me, it's seeing how our West Indian players are sort of maneuvering through the tournament,
01:51:01and especially those young ones as well. Nicholas Curran, for instance, just to see how
01:51:07our players just kind of maneuver through this tournament, because everybody's still looking
01:51:13for a spot. We have a lot of talent in this CPL teams, and it's just to see how they progress,
01:51:21especially like Mikel Louis as well, who plays all formats now. They test cricket and how does
01:51:26he adjust now to T20s. It's just been an eye-opener and again, biggest party in sport. It's been
01:51:34a lot of fun so far to have taken in some of these games.
01:51:37Yes, Stacey-Ann King, it was a pleasure speaking with you. Thank you very much and bye for now.
01:51:44Thank you very much.
