‘I think Sinner got away with it!’ Controversy surrounds US Open winner after two failed drugs tests before his second slam victory in 2024

A roundup of the US Open in New York as many Sinner fans may be feeling they got fairly lucky to see the Italian even compete after the controversial situation that followed him at the event. He leads the ATP rankings and looks to continue in 2025.

00:00So, Paneet, obviously, on the back of the 2024 US Open, Yannick Sinner coming away with

00:07his second slam of the year. Just on the US Open, what were your thoughts of it? Obviously,

00:13a fantastic tournament. We had quite a bit of drama as well throughout it. Sinner comes

00:18away with the win. How impressed were you by his performances at the event?

00:22I mean, I felt Sinner was really clinical. He looked like he was just on a different

00:28level in every match that he played. It never felt that he was, you know, at any risk of

00:33losing any of the matches. I think his draw was quite favourable, to be honest, but I

00:38think that he didn't even have to go to that next level. He didn't really have to even

00:42play hard. He made it look so easy. And I think the final, it was, you know, it wasn't

00:48an exciting final, but it really showcased how amazing Sinner is in all aspects of his

00:54game now, and especially mentally as well. Like, had all the crowd, got going eventually,

01:01and you know, he was serving. You know, Sinner just stayed really cool, broke him back so

01:05easily and then just finished the job in three sets. So, didn't even get to a tiebreak, didn't

01:10really have to break a sweat. So, yeah, really, really impressive.

01:14And there was obviously quite a lot of controversy across social media as well, people picking

01:19out the sort of failed drugs test. What was your sort of take on that? Obviously, you

01:24know, Novak Djokovic suffered a few seasons ago with him not being able to compete in

01:29certain events. And then, you know, it's maybe seen as a bit unfair, if you look back at

01:35that, with Sinner's failed drugs test, and then he's allowed to compete and he ends up

01:40winning and, you know, it's quite a strange situation in the tennis world at the moment.

01:45I mean, it is really strange. And I think there was a tweet from Matt Letizia yesterday,

01:50and he basically hit the nail on the head and said, Novak Djokovic was banned from playing

01:54in the US Open for not taking, you know, a trial drug. And Sinner has failed two doping

02:01tests this year and he's playing. And we know that, you know, other players have not been

02:07able to get away with it so easily. You know, there was, there has been a cover up, and

02:11the authorities have kind of hushed it up a little bit. It's not been clear. And I think

02:16even the similar cases of people who have been through the Sinner kind of scenario,

02:21if you look at their reports, they're heavily redacted. It's, it all smacks of something

02:26and it's not right. I don't think there was transparency. I think Sinner got away with

02:30it. I think he had lawyers to pay his way out. And I'm just shocked that nobody knew

02:36about this until throughout the US Open. But I don't think it's fair for other tennis players

02:42especially lower ranked players who really depend on tennis for, you know, their income.

02:46I'm not protecting people who failed doping tests, other people, but everybody needs to

02:51be treated fairly and it needs to be transparent. And I think the transparency hasn't been there.

02:57And there is a lot of question marks over Yannick Sinner.
