00:00Nightly greetings, one and all.
00:05William Theo here, homegrown, and happy to bring you PTV News Now.
00:09Tonight's top story, Dismissed Bamban Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo couldn't have gone it alone
00:16in her escape out of the country in the third week of July.
00:19And while the Senate police and everyone else are fixated in knowing who helped Guo locally,
00:25Senate President Cheese Escudero also seeks to hold into account the foreigners who aided
00:30and abetted Guo here at home and beyond.
00:33As much as Senate President Escudero strongly pushes to probe government involvement in
00:38Guo's escape other than those in the Bureau of Immigration, he also urges to run after
00:44non-Filipino actors and players who lent Guo and or her siblings a hand to slip out of
00:50the country undetected.
00:52In yesterday's Senate probe resumption on illegal Pogos, Alice Guo remained true to
00:57her claim.
00:58Much to the frustration of the Senate grilling panel, no Filipino aided her, her siblings,
01:04and Cassie Ong in their escape.
01:06Then again, Escudero shares the prevailing opinion of just every senator in the panel.
01:10Guo received a lift or push from locals getting out of the country, then paid off foreign
01:16nationals or the Chinese in countries she visited when she was on the run.
01:23The United States is weighing options of which actions to take after leading opposition leader
01:27Venezuela flees the country for Spain in the wake of a crackdown ordered by authoritarian
01:34leader Nicolás Maduro on all opposition leaders and rival presidential candidates.
01:40The UAE's Celia Mendoza reports from the State Department in Washington, D.C.
01:47The United States is evaluating measures against the government of Venezuelan President
01:52Nicolás Maduro after opposition candidate Edmundo González was forced to seek political
01:59asylum in Spain.
02:00According to data gathered by local observers and released by the opposition, González
02:06received the most votes in the July 28 presidential election.
02:11Nothing is off the table and in close coordination with our partners, including those that we
02:15engage with regularly on this, we're considering a range of options to demonstrate to Maduro
02:20and his representatives that their misgovernments, their crackdown on human rights, their disregard
02:28for democracy and free and fair elections has real and legitimate consequences.
02:32The exit of the 75-year-old González was coordinated between the governments of Spain
02:38and Venezuela, according to Venezuela's Attorney General, Tarek Saab.
02:46The government of Spain and Venezuela agreed on providing a safe passage to citizen Edmundo
02:51González Urushia so he could abandon the national territory and he could receive the
02:57asylum granted by Spain.
02:59In consequence, this public ministry expresses absolute respect toward decisions of the Venezuelan
03:06executive who granted the corresponding safe passage by complying with the right to asylum
03:12guaranteed by the Venezuelan constitution.
03:14In Article 69, the Biden administration has imposed sanctions against companies and members
03:21of the government in Venezuela, and the U.S. and others have used these measures as leverage
03:27to broker agreements such as last fall's Barbados deal, which outlined conditions for a competitive
03:35election in Venezuela.
03:37However, opposition leader María Corina Machado, who was banned from participating in the election,
03:43says the U.S. has not done enough.
03:45I certainly think the United States should do much more, and I've been very clear to
03:51them and to other countries.
03:54I think that perpetrators of human rights violations and crimes against humanity should
04:02know that they will be held accountable because it sends a message to the rest of them not
04:09to do that, not only in the military but also today in the judiciary system.
04:16The White House on Monday intensified its calls for transparency and the release of
04:22the voting data.
04:23What needs to happen next is Mr. Maduro needs to heed the call of the international community
04:28and quite frankly the Venezuelan people and release the data so that the whole world can
04:32see what the Venezuelan people, who they voted for, and that their democratic aspirations
04:37are met.
04:38Maduro has dismissed González's claims of victory, alleging there was a right-wing plot
04:44to sabotage his government.
04:46The opposition, meanwhile, has mobilized the Venezuelan diaspora to protest in cities worldwide
04:52in dispute of the election results.
04:55Celia Mendoza, VOA News, the State Department.
05:02And right now, let's turn to my colleague in PTV's Baguio City Studios for what's brewing
05:07and hot in the Cordilleras.
