I drove 630 miles for this piece of furniture.
00:02
Was that dumb of me?
00:03
Probably.
00:03
But I've done dumber.
00:04
And I bet you have too.
00:05
So come on, we're making bad decisions together.
00:07
Here's the deal.
00:07
This thing is very broken.
00:08
If you would direct your attention to the side
00:10
and use some deductive reasoning,
00:11
you would notice that it's not supposed to be like that.
00:13
So we're gonna fix it.
00:14
And step one of that is tricking my dad into doing all the work.
00:17
Dad!
00:17
I offered him pizza.
00:18
It works every time.
00:19
See, when I said this thing was very broken,
00:21
I wasn't just talking about the base.
00:22
Yeah.
00:22
That's not supposed to do that.
00:24
Especially considering this is what holds up the lid.
00:26
If you couldn't tell, this chest is old.
00:27
And when I say old, I mean older than your mama.
00:29
And your mama's mama.
00:30
And possibly your mama's mama's mama.
00:32
If I was guessing, I'd say late 1800s, early 1900s.
00:35
And after 100 years of holding things up, she's tired.
00:37
Honey, I'd be tired too.
00:38
I'd be pissed if I was still kicking after all that time.
00:40
But thankfully, this is an inanimate object that has no feelings.
00:43
And it's also a family heirloom.
00:44
So whether it likes it or not, we will resuscitate it.
00:46
Which unfortunately requires a bunch of surgeries.
00:49
Like simply gluing and clamping.
00:50
Or fully detaching limbs.
00:52
What year do you think this dust is from?
00:53
Detaching limbs very carefully, I might add.
00:55
Because this whole thing is made out of hand-cut nails.
00:57
And though hand-cutting nails is very impressive,
00:58
if you look at them wrong, they will split your wood.
01:00
And we need to salvage what we can so we can replicate it.
01:02
Which means doing what you gotta do sometimes.
01:06
To truly fix things, you gotta make it worse first.
01:08
Kinda like cleaning.
01:09
There's gotta be a little chaos involved or I'm not doing it.
01:11
In this case, the nails are loose.
01:12
So to fix it, we need to make it loose.
01:14
As well as scrape out 100 years of dead skin cells.
01:17
So that we have some space for the glue to penetrate.
01:19
Get down in there.
01:21
Get down in there.
01:22
The more surface area there's glue, the better.
01:24
So put that on everything.
01:26
If it's not popping out the seams when you clamp, then you need more.
01:29
And then second rule of woodworking, you can never have enough clamps.
01:31
And just like that, you fixed it.
01:32
Ta-da!
01:33
Now that the major surgeries are over, let's do some cosmetic ones.
01:36
This chest had extra mortises for hinges.
01:38
If you don't know what a mortise is,
01:39
it's a fancy word for hole that you put stuff in.
01:42
In this case, a hinge.
01:43
Which holds up the lid.
01:44
Or it did at one point in its life.
01:45
Until it failed.
01:46
And someone cut a new mortise into it to hold up the lid.
01:48
So since this one's not really doing anything,
01:50
I'm gonna make it disappear.
01:52
Meanwhile, Dad's cutting down some rough sawn walnut.
01:54
Which we will be using to rebuild the base.
01:55
Eeeeeeee!
01:57
Cutting the pieces for the sides was quite simple.
01:59
The front piece, however, not so simple.
02:01
We traced what we could and very precisely guesstimated the rest.
02:03
Then Dad cut it out with the bandsaw.
02:05
Everybody say good job, Dad!
02:07
Then we had to figure out how to match the profile of it.
02:09
Since the original was slightly beveled at the top.
02:11
Unfortunately, this task threw Dad for a loop.
02:13
Usually, if we're not doing the most, then what are we doing?
02:15
But this time, Dad was doing too much.
02:17
And was making it way more complicated than it needed to be.
02:19
Thankfully, I'm a genius!
02:20
And told him all he had to do is flip it upside down
02:22
and set the blade to a complimentary angle.
02:23
And basically, that he was wrong and I was right.
02:25
And then he finally did it!
02:27
Then we had to figure out how to match the routed detail.
02:29
I gave dad back the power of being the brains of the operation for this one.
02:32
Since we didn't have a router bit that was an exact match.
02:34
Dad had to improvise a little bit.
02:35
And in case he messed up, I didn't want to take any of the responsibility.
02:38
Which thankfully for him, he didn't mess up.
02:40
If he did, I would have been very grumpy.
02:42
Time to sand!
02:43
ZZZZZZ
02:46
A lot of sanding was required.
02:48
And even after going up the grid, there were some stubborn scratches.
02:50
So we had to take it a step further.
02:52
Let's get it on!
02:53
Any imperfections I couldn't get with sanding, got filled.
02:55
Like this giant knot.
02:56
Which I'm sure has been a lovely home for dust for the past many years.
02:59
Or this missing chunk.
03:00
Which of course had to be made worse, before it could be made better.
03:02
If you haven't figured it out by now, we were obviously hired to restore this chunk.
03:05
Usually you'd make it look the exact same as the original.
03:07
But that wasn't good enough for dad.
03:09
So he insisted on making the sides look better.
03:10
Now we just have to put it all back together!
03:12
And in dad fashion, we're gonna make that better as well.
03:14
By adding a lot more support.
03:15
Some glue, some screws, some adjustable feet, the whole shebang.
03:18
But that's not very antique of us.
03:20
So we're gonna hide the screws with the head of the nails we pulled off from before.
03:23
No one's gonna know.
03:23
How would they know?
03:24
Now give everything a good clean with
03:25
TOXIC CHEMICALS
03:27
Oil that baby up.
03:28
Wow.
03:28
Then add the sparkle and the shine.
03:30
Which normally I would do by deep cleaning the brass.
03:31
But this isn't brass.
03:32
Because brass is not magnetic.
03:34
So instead we had to add the sparkle and the shine with some Rub and Buff.
03:36
But now it looks like this.
03:37
Wow.
03:38
It's not crooked anymore.
03:39
In case you've forgotten.
03:40
I sure didn't.
03:41
Because even though it might not be the biggest furniture, it was a lot of work.
03:43
Antiques always are.
03:45
I haven't even showed you the best part yet.
03:46
No, it's not this beautiful walnut.
03:48
Surprise!
03:49
We added soft-close hinges.
03:50
So now it can stay open by itself and not slam closed.
03:52
How luxurious.
03:53
I hope they like it.
03:54
Especially because I drove 630 miles to deliver it.
03:56
I'm just kidding.
03:57
I didn't drive 630 miles just to deliver this chest.
04:00
That'd be silly.
04:00
I also visited my sister.
04:02
Which is a human.
04:03
Not a dog.
04:03
That's my niece.
04:04
Which is a dog.
04:05
Not a human.
04:06
And I know I'm not fluent in dog, but
04:07
I'm pretty sure Nala approves of the chest.
04:09
Isn't that right, Nala?
04:10
Isn't that right?
04:11
Oh, not the face.
04:12
Not the face.
