00:00I drove 630 miles for this piece of furniture.

00:02Was that dumb of me?

00:03Probably.

00:03But I've done dumber.

00:04And I bet you have too.

00:05So come on, we're making bad decisions together.

00:07Here's the deal.

00:07This thing is very broken.

00:08If you would direct your attention to the side

00:10and use some deductive reasoning,

00:11you would notice that it's not supposed to be like that.

00:13So we're gonna fix it.

00:14And step one of that is tricking my dad into doing all the work.

00:17Dad!

00:17I offered him pizza.

00:18It works every time.

00:19See, when I said this thing was very broken,

00:21I wasn't just talking about the base.

00:22Yeah.

00:22That's not supposed to do that.

00:24Especially considering this is what holds up the lid.

00:26If you couldn't tell, this chest is old.

00:27And when I say old, I mean older than your mama.

00:29And your mama's mama.

00:30And possibly your mama's mama's mama.

00:32If I was guessing, I'd say late 1800s, early 1900s.

00:35And after 100 years of holding things up, she's tired.

00:37Honey, I'd be tired too.

00:38I'd be pissed if I was still kicking after all that time.

00:40But thankfully, this is an inanimate object that has no feelings.

00:43And it's also a family heirloom.

00:44So whether it likes it or not, we will resuscitate it.

00:46Which unfortunately requires a bunch of surgeries.

00:49Like simply gluing and clamping.

00:50Or fully detaching limbs.

00:52What year do you think this dust is from?

00:53Detaching limbs very carefully, I might add.

00:55Because this whole thing is made out of hand-cut nails.

00:57And though hand-cutting nails is very impressive,

00:58if you look at them wrong, they will split your wood.

01:00And we need to salvage what we can so we can replicate it.

01:02Which means doing what you gotta do sometimes.

01:06To truly fix things, you gotta make it worse first.

01:08Kinda like cleaning.

01:09There's gotta be a little chaos involved or I'm not doing it.

01:11In this case, the nails are loose.

01:12So to fix it, we need to make it loose.

01:14As well as scrape out 100 years of dead skin cells.

01:17So that we have some space for the glue to penetrate.

01:19Get down in there.

01:21Get down in there.

01:22The more surface area there's glue, the better.

01:24So put that on everything.

01:26If it's not popping out the seams when you clamp, then you need more.

01:29And then second rule of woodworking, you can never have enough clamps.

01:31And just like that, you fixed it.

01:32Ta-da!

01:33Now that the major surgeries are over, let's do some cosmetic ones.

01:36This chest had extra mortises for hinges.

01:38If you don't know what a mortise is,

01:39it's a fancy word for hole that you put stuff in.

01:42In this case, a hinge.

01:43Which holds up the lid.

01:44Or it did at one point in its life.

01:45Until it failed.

01:46And someone cut a new mortise into it to hold up the lid.

01:48So since this one's not really doing anything,

01:50I'm gonna make it disappear.

01:52Meanwhile, Dad's cutting down some rough sawn walnut.

01:54Which we will be using to rebuild the base.

01:55Eeeeeeee!

01:57Cutting the pieces for the sides was quite simple.

01:59The front piece, however, not so simple.

02:01We traced what we could and very precisely guesstimated the rest.

02:03Then Dad cut it out with the bandsaw.

02:05Everybody say good job, Dad!

02:07Then we had to figure out how to match the profile of it.

02:09Since the original was slightly beveled at the top.

02:11Unfortunately, this task threw Dad for a loop.

02:13Usually, if we're not doing the most, then what are we doing?

02:15But this time, Dad was doing too much.

02:17And was making it way more complicated than it needed to be.

02:19Thankfully, I'm a genius!

02:20And told him all he had to do is flip it upside down

02:22and set the blade to a complimentary angle.

02:23And basically, that he was wrong and I was right.

02:25And then he finally did it!

02:27Then we had to figure out how to match the routed detail.

02:29I gave dad back the power of being the brains of the operation for this one.

02:32Since we didn't have a router bit that was an exact match.

02:34Dad had to improvise a little bit.

02:35And in case he messed up, I didn't want to take any of the responsibility.

02:38Which thankfully for him, he didn't mess up.

02:40If he did, I would have been very grumpy.

02:42Time to sand!

02:43ZZZZZZ

02:46A lot of sanding was required.

02:48And even after going up the grid, there were some stubborn scratches.

02:50So we had to take it a step further.

02:52Let's get it on!

02:53Any imperfections I couldn't get with sanding, got filled.

02:55Like this giant knot.

02:56Which I'm sure has been a lovely home for dust for the past many years.

02:59Or this missing chunk.

03:00Which of course had to be made worse, before it could be made better.

03:02If you haven't figured it out by now, we were obviously hired to restore this chunk.

03:05Usually you'd make it look the exact same as the original.

03:07But that wasn't good enough for dad.

03:09So he insisted on making the sides look better.

03:10Now we just have to put it all back together!

03:12And in dad fashion, we're gonna make that better as well.

03:14By adding a lot more support.

03:15Some glue, some screws, some adjustable feet, the whole shebang.

03:18But that's not very antique of us.

03:20So we're gonna hide the screws with the head of the nails we pulled off from before.

03:23No one's gonna know.

03:23How would they know?

03:24Now give everything a good clean with

03:25TOXIC CHEMICALS

03:27Oil that baby up.

03:28Wow.

03:28Then add the sparkle and the shine.

03:30Which normally I would do by deep cleaning the brass.

03:31But this isn't brass.

03:32Because brass is not magnetic.

03:34So instead we had to add the sparkle and the shine with some Rub and Buff.

03:36But now it looks like this.

03:37Wow.

03:38It's not crooked anymore.

03:39In case you've forgotten.

03:40I sure didn't.

03:41Because even though it might not be the biggest furniture, it was a lot of work.

03:43Antiques always are.

03:45I haven't even showed you the best part yet.

03:46No, it's not this beautiful walnut.

03:48Surprise!

03:49We added soft-close hinges.

03:50So now it can stay open by itself and not slam closed.

03:52How luxurious.

03:53I hope they like it.

03:54Especially because I drove 630 miles to deliver it.

03:56I'm just kidding.

03:57I didn't drive 630 miles just to deliver this chest.

04:00That'd be silly.

04:00I also visited my sister.

04:02Which is a human.
