00:00I bought this for $45 off of Facebook Marketplace. Do you think I can turn it into $750?

00:06We got a couple scratches.

00:08But overall, she is not in bad condition at all.

00:11Can you believe people are just giving away this stuff on Facebook Marketplace?

00:13This girlie is a 1969 Haywood Wakefield solid wood sideboard.

00:17Your IKEA piece of trash could never.

00:19Let's start by trying to get all those scratches off the top.

00:21I started with 150 grit and that finish didn't budge.

00:24So we lowered it down to 120.

00:26And then 80. And then 60.

00:28This finish is gonna be as stubborn like me.

00:30She must be a Taurus.

00:31This sanding had me sweating. Look, the sweatshirt's already off.

00:34We finally made some progress with 80 grit sandpaper.

00:37But that means we gotta come all the way back up the grits.

00:40Look at that bear beauty.

00:41She's clean but she's not smooth.

00:43But don't worry, we're gonna turn this wood into glass.

00:45To make sure that I'm gonna get an even sand,

00:47I'm writing on the wood with a pencil and then I'm gonna sand it off at each grit.

00:51I left you a little hidden message.

00:52Comment if you can read it.

00:53Since the last grit I used was 80, we're starting with 120 grit.

00:56Once you've removed all the pencil marks at one grit, you go to the next.

00:59Next up, 150, 180, then 220.

01:02This helps to ensure that your stains can absorb evenly.

01:04And sand away any swirl marks that's left over from lower grits.

01:08Once I finished up with the 220 grit, it was ready to stain.

01:10Because we suspected that this wood was maple,

01:12I'm using a preconditioner before I go in with the stain.

01:15Porous woods don't like to accept stain evenly.

01:17So we're giving ourselves the best odds.

01:18Because we're gonna be using an oil-based stain,

01:20I'm using an oil-based wood conditioner.

01:22Let's let that sink in while I talk about water-based stains.

01:25They look like brown poopy paint and I hate them.

01:27That's all.

01:28Let's stain this piece.

01:29You like how Dad's standing in the background just to make sure I don't F things up?

01:32Classic.

01:33Honestly though, it's warranted.

01:35He's a perfectionist and I was a lazy piece of **** for the past 25 years.

01:38I'm using the color Colonial Maple by Minwax

01:41because it looks like it's gonna be a perfect match.

01:43Spoiler, it wasn't.

01:44Now we wait a little bit to let that stain sink in.

01:47Wipe her back.

01:48Direction of the grain, people.

01:49And here's what we're looking like.

01:51She is too light.

01:52Behind the scenes, Dad threw some dark walnut over the top

01:54and it's a perfect match.

01:55He's brilliant.

01:56When I first picked this piece up, I wanted to change it all.

01:58Get rid of that base.

01:59Cut out the center of the doors.

02:01Brighten that baby up with some paint.

02:03But I'm not a monster and I respect quality.

02:06So I instead opted to cut out the center of the doors only.

02:09But this cut had to be precise.

02:10So thank God Dad is the king of precision.

02:12He came up with a great plan to cut the door out from underneath using a router table.

02:16Long story short, most of these wooden doors just have an inlay in them

02:18so we had to get the inlay out without cutting through the door.

02:20It took us a couple tries to get the router deep enough and far enough to remove the paneling.

02:24We wanted to sneak up on it, be a little sneaky sneaky snake.

02:27It took four attempts but we got there.

02:29Wow, look at that success.

02:30You'll love to see it.

02:31Now we just have to clean up those edges to make it look professional.

02:34Dad's scooting it back through the router table just to clear any extra bits.

02:37Oh yeah, and I brought all this fancy tool for around the corners.

02:40Now let's fill that giant hole we just created.

02:42I drew up a nice warm bath.

02:43We're gonna let that soak for 30 minutes and get it all loosey goosey.

02:47Have fun in there.

02:47Not too much fun though.

02:49Dad's already done some rough cuts for this trim.

02:51So while we're waiting for the cane webbing, let's stain these so they blend in nicely.

02:54I'm wiping on a light coat of dark walnut by Minwax.

02:57Dad used his pull saw to get rid of some length.

02:59And since the router table created rounded corners,

03:01we have to shape the end of our trim pieces to fit.

03:03So dad whipped out the grinder and he's rounding the corners.

03:06Thank god dad always accounts for my mistakes and cut an extra piece because I did this one up.

03:10But hey, we're learning.

03:11Normally for cane webbing, you need a channel and splicing.

03:13And you know what we don't have?

03:14A channel or splicing.

03:16But we do have the brains of my father.

03:17Glue's too messy and we didn't think staples would hold.

03:19So instead, we are pre-drilling our holes and we are going to wrap this cane around the trim.

03:23Dad enlarged the holes to make room for the head of the screws.

03:25Now let's see if we can jam this cane in there.

03:27We lined up the first trim piece.

03:29Double, triple check that that thing is straight.

03:31If it's not, the whole thing's gonna look like garbage.

03:34We ended up using some clamps to hold the trim while we screwed it into place.

03:37Wow, it's looking nice.

03:39Once it was screwed in, we just had to cut back the excess cane.

03:41Since this piece was in such good condition, I was not about to strip it all down.

03:45Let me show you a little magic trick.

03:46Look close.

03:47You see those crusty marks?

03:48Abracadabra, no you don't.

03:49Do you know how much time and sanity this $10 bottle of Restore Finish saved me?

03:53Lastly, we gotta do a little something something with the hardware.

03:56There's a time and place for bat wings, but uh, it's not here.

03:58So they got to go.

04:00With some pliers and a little hand strength, which apparently I do not have,

04:03we got a whole new set of hardware for $0.

04:05Look, this sideboard had two different sized hardware.

04:08And I scoured the internet up, down, left, right, couldn't find anything.

04:10So we had to keep the pulls.

04:11But my wallet is not mad.

04:13The only trade-off is we lost a little thickness in the pulls.

04:15So to use the original screws, I had to add two washers to tighten it back up.

04:19So what do we think?

04:20Wow!

04:22Was it absolutely unnecessary to add this cane webbing?

04:24Yes.

04:25But does it look absolutely stunning?

04:26Yeah!

04:28Can I get some snaps for dad on that color match?

04:31Excellent.

04:31Look at how professional the inside of this door looks.

04:34Heywood Wakefield, just hire me already.
