00:00:00I see fruits of our ambitions, figments of our imagination, and I ask myself, when will it end? When will it end? It is plain to see.
00:00:15When will it end? When will it end? Alright, a very special good morning Trinidad and Tobago. I'm Marlon Hopkinson and welcome to the Morning Edition.
00:00:22It's Thursday, the 5th of September. Thank you very much for joining us this morning. We do appreciate it.

00:07:51Alright. So, welcome back everyone. So, as you look at the dailies today, this is what? Yeah? Faces you this morning. Alright? So, another fatal gun attack at one of the country's health institutions.
00:08:13Yesterday, two men, one armed with a rifle and the other with a shotgun, went into the compound of the St. James Medical Complex and shot and killed Jamal Watts. Mr. Watts was a maintenance worker at the hospital. Investigations are continuing. Well, to speak about this matter this morning is Karen East MP, Dr. Rishad Secharan, medical practitioner, and the UNC's shadow minister for health. Doctor, good morning and thank you very much for joining us.
00:08:39Good morning, Marlon, and good morning to everyone. Thank you for having me today. Of course, doctor. Well, doctor, as you look at what has transpired or what transpired yesterday, of course, there was another incident some months ago. What is your impression this morning?
00:08:56Well, to begin with, I'd like to, on behalf of the United National Congress, give condolences to the family of Mr. Jamal Watts. It's a senseless crime and we have been seeing increasing incidents at our health care institutions over the last couple of years.
00:09:12You would remember in June of 2024, we actually had three persons killed at the Port of Spain General Hospital and actually two were killed while they were on a stretcher. And in August of 2023 at the Arima Hospital, we had Marvin Safe being gunned down in the car park of the Arima Hospital.
00:09:33So this occurred at the St. James Medical Complex. Mr. Watts was actually performing his duties as a maintenance person on the compound. And it's a senseless crime and it speaks to what's happening in the country at the moment.
00:09:51Chaos is currently reigning in Trinidad and Tobago and nowhere is safe. We are seeing a proliferation of illegal guns in the hands of criminals. We actually had access to a U.N. report recently titled The Caribbean Gangs, Guns, Firearms and Gangs.
00:10:11And they made a reference to the fact that these gangs in Venezuela are trading with our gangs here in Trinidad and Tobago. They are trading guns and we on this side are giving them food.
00:10:24So, you know, we have a very significant illegal gun trade here in Trinidad and Tobago. There's a proliferation of illegal firearms. They are in the hands of criminals. And as I said before, nowhere is safe in Trinidad and Tobago. No one feels safe. No one feels secure. And a serious crime can happen at any moment, at any time and at any place.
00:10:48But, you know, Doctor, incidents such as these, I think in the past, I don't know if any incidents would have happened such as these over the years, maybe 10, 20, 30 years ago. I don't know. But I'm just saying that there was always the feeling, the impression by people, the perception by people that hospitals would have been a safe place.
00:11:14So if you go there, it doesn't matter if a criminal is sent there or not, but no harm would come to you.
00:11:22So basically, we have to increase our security in our nation's hospitals. And I'm hoping that in the upcoming budget, this 50-year budget of this PNM administration, that something is done to increase the level of security at our nation's hospitals and healthcare institutions.
00:11:43Just recently, I actually had to visit a relative at the priority care facility in Montauk. And while I was there outside the facility, a group of men came and, you know, they wanted to see their comrade that was being treated in the facility.
00:12:00And they were very aggressive and belligerent with the security guard that was on duty. And it was a lone security guard. It was an unarmed security guard. And I felt sorry for this guy because there was no way he could control the situation with these three or four individuals.
00:12:18So yes, there is security in our hospitals, but it's a level of security. And our doctors, our nurses, our healthcare technicians, the auxiliary staff, the patients, no one feels safe. And more has to be done by the Minister of Health. And I'm hoping and I'm asking him to do something about the security in our health institutions in the upcoming bill.
00:12:43But you know, Doctor, I'm just thinking this morning, as you referred to the health workers, I'm just wondering about their mentality this morning. How do we continue in such an environment that has become so volatile?
00:13:00Yeah, you're going to work and you're free to go to work. You know, you don't know what could happen at your workplace. And it's up to the employer, being the state, to secure the employees, as well as the patients, the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
00:13:16So mental health would have to be taken into consideration to the friends, the co-workers, Jamal Watts, in this instance. But going forward, the workers at the St. James Medical Complex, they would have to be reassured that their security is being well looked after by this administration.
00:13:37But let's look a little bit, Doctor Sitcharan, at what has been done. Of course, we said this morning and the data is there, the facts are there. This is not the first time that we have seen an attack at an institution and more so a fatal attack.
00:13:58So when you look and you put this in context, then how do you assess the security measures that have been put in place? We have even seen where health workers have come under attack, being beaten by individuals at the facility. Security personnel are being beaten. So what does that say about the security arrangements?
00:14:25Well, for example, the incident that happened in June of 2024, where armed men followed persons that were shot at another location into the Port of Spain General Hospital. And by the reports in the newspapers, these men were dressed in tactical warfare and they had machine guns, automatic rifles.
00:14:51So there's little that you can do in that situation. You know, these criminals are dressed for war. So it speaks to the society at large. And this is what citizens are going through in every single workplace in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:15:10Not only in our health care institutions, there are home invasions, there are robberies. And these are only the major incidents at the health institutions. There are numerous accounts of stabbings, of robberies, of rapes.
00:15:23So we have to look at this in a broader context of what's happening in and around our health care institutions in Trinidad and Tobago. As a nation, we have to be cognizant of the fact that Trinidad and Tobago is getting more and more violent.
00:15:43There are more and more guns in Trinidad and Tobago, illegal firearms. And citizens are unable to protect themselves. They have very little personal safety for themselves and their family. And we have to address this at a national level.
00:16:01So in this regard, this is not only an issue for the health care sector, but this is also an issue for the national security. And there's a proliferation of crime in Trinidad and Tobago. And it has to be dealt with at a fundamental level.
00:16:18Yeah. You know, I was looking at a statement that came from the TTPS yesterday, and it speaks about one of the individuals was armed with a rifle, a rifle, and the other had a shotgun. And Dr. Sicharan, as we look at this on the surface here, these seem to be weapons of war.
00:16:40So what do we do with these medical institutions now? Do we have to prepare them for war? Do you see armed security on the compounds of facilities with similar weapons as what these men are coming to these hospitals with? How do you match up?
00:17:01Well, we have to look after the ones that work at these health care facilities. That's a duty of the government. And if that's the extent that the state would have to go, that is something that would have to be assessed.
00:17:16As I said before, you know, these criminals, when they follow the ones that they are after, they are dressed in tactical warfare, body armor, bulletproof vests, and they are armed with guns that can fire 100 rungs a minute. So, you know, that is basically warfare.
00:17:35And the question is, where are they getting these weapons from? We have to stop the illegal guns in Trinidad and Tobago. And it's not a normal pistol, as we have seen in years gone by. It's machine guns. It's AR-15s. And they are also getting the ammo to go with these guns.
00:17:57So, in regards to what the health care institutions have to do, they definitely have to ramp up their security measures. And if it means that, you know, we possibly have increased armed personnel at our nation's hospitals, that is something that we would have to do.
00:18:15Let's look at the police's response, Dr. Sitcharan, because in recent times, the police service has spoken about an increase in patrols and a more consistent presence across communities in Trinidad and Tobago. As we look at what the police has put in place, how do you assess it? Has it worked well? Has it not worked well?
00:18:46Well, just from popular sentiment, it has not worked well and it is not working well. One of the measures that we have advocated in the United National Congress is for the increase of community comfort patrols.
00:19:00This would alleviate some of the fears that residents may have in residential communities. These patrols usually throw off the criminals because you don't know when they could occur. As we see right now, criminals have free reign in many residential communities with regards to home invasions.
00:19:21So there are more measures, there are additional measures that the police service can implement. And we have been advocating for many of these measures in the past few months and years. And we are hoping that in the upcoming budget administration, they have the opportunity to remedy many of the ills that have gone wrong in the last four to nine years.
00:19:44So we are hoping for an additional allocation to the Ministry of National Security and increased more effective policies with regards to national security.

00:22:03Daybreak
00:22:24It's not a thrill when your speed can't kill.
00:22:32Let's have a party
00:23:02Dr. Sitcharan, thank you very much for staying with us. Doctor, well as I said earlier, you are the Karene East MP. How has the crime impacted your community?
00:23:14Quite drastically. We have seen a great increase in crime.
00:23:19When the incident occurred on the Southern Main Road, whereby in front of the Pizza Boys outlet in Canopia, where the persons blocked the car and they murdered three persons, that is actually in Karene East.
00:23:36We actually have a great increase in home invasions as well in Karene East. I'm currently doing walkabouts in my constituency, and almost every walkabout I encounter a household that has experience of home invasion.
00:23:52I've actually encountered one household where the person was actually shot and killed in front of his children and his grandchildren, and the police took over half an hour, 30 minutes to arrive at the scene.
00:24:09So crime is impacting Karene East in a significant way. It's detrimental not only to communities, but also to the economic viability of these communities. It is something that has to be addressed with immediate concern. It's affecting every single part of everyone's life in Karene East.
00:24:32But you know, judging from what you have told us, Doctor, it seems to be one, an untenable situation, but more than that, how are people expected to live a comfortable life if they feel that if they go to sleep at night, sometimes during the night into the morning, that someone is going to break into their home and rob them and in some cases do other things to them?
00:25:02How are they sleeping well?
00:25:04It's mental torture.
00:25:35They lack weapons. You know, we ask them, you know, what weaponry you have, and they tell us, and it's not enough.
00:25:43When citizens make a report, if one vehicle goes out, in many cases, they don't have a second vehicle by emergency.
00:25:52And the police officers, you know, they are trying to manage the situation with what they have, but they need so much more. They need to be supported by the government.
00:26:01And additionally, with regards to the budget, I'm hoping that in the upcoming budget, these police stations and the police officers are given more resources.
00:26:13They need bulletproof vests. In many cases, they would need body armor to engage these criminals that have very advanced weaponry.
00:26:22And as I said, some of these guns can shoot 100 rounds per minute. That's more than one bullet per second. How could you dodge that?
00:26:32And, you know, we have a proliferation of murders over the last four years in Karen East.
00:26:37And, you know, it's happening in the open, whereby it's on the main road, the dead bodies right there during prime time traffic for kids, for everyone to see.
00:26:46In many cases, 40, 50 bullets are found on the scene. I have recanted many of these issues and many of these murders or killings in Parliament.
00:26:57And nothing is being done. I've asked for a police post in Kelly Village for the last four years, every single year.
00:27:03And we have not gotten that. Kelly Village is becoming a hot spot.
00:27:07So, you know, our issues with regards to crime, with regards to safety, are not being addressed by this administration.
00:27:14And as you said, residents, citizens, not only in Karen East, but in the community, in the country at large, they are feeling unsafe.
00:27:24It's mental torture, not knowing if you are safe to go to the grocery, if you are safe to go to the cinema, if you are safe to go to the hospital, Marlon.
00:27:34And that's what citizens are dealing with, not only in Karen East.
00:27:37Yeah. Doctor, you spoke about Kelly Village a little earlier.
00:27:41And I know that for some time now, there has been a major problem of extortion in Kelly Village.
00:27:48And we have seen certain businesses shut down because of the situation.
00:27:52We have seen the police try to attempt to deal with that.
00:27:57Recently, there was a meeting of the Chagones Chamber.
00:28:02And it was also mentioned at that time that extortion seems to be a major problem in the central area.
00:28:11Is that so in your particular area?
00:28:15Definitely.
00:28:16We have had a number of police TTPS cottage meetings, town hall meetings in Kelly Village and in Viren, St. Helena.
00:28:27We have a number of businessmen that have been murdered in the last four years.
00:28:32I actually had one instance at a TTPS town meeting whereby a resident came forward and made a complaint with regards to an issue she was having.
00:28:46To the police officers.
00:28:48And this was recorded and videotaped by the TTPS.
00:28:52The next day, Marlon, the next day, her house was burned down.
00:28:57And she felt safe enough to make this complaint in front of everyone at the meeting to senior police officers in Central Division.
00:29:08And the very next day, her house was burned down.
00:29:11So that's what we are dealing with here in Karen East.
00:29:13It's extortion.
00:29:15It's thuggery.
00:29:17It's gang violence.
00:29:19At night in Kelly Village, you hear routinely gunshots being fired.
00:29:25I have said this in Parliament.
00:29:27And nothing is being done to locate these weapons.
00:29:30How difficult it is.
00:29:32You know gunshots are going to go off at night.
00:29:35To try to figure out the exact location of where this is occurring.
00:29:38And pinpoint and use roadblocks to try to get this weapon or weapons.
00:29:44And residents are not seeing this, you know.
00:29:47So in many instances, they are feeling very abandoned by law enforcement and the government, the administration.
00:29:58So more has to be done.
00:29:59I have asked the Commissioner of Police for a police post in Kelly Village.
00:30:04And we probably need more than one police post in Karen East.
00:30:08But Kelly Village is the priority at this moment.
00:30:11With adjacent to St Helena.
00:30:14So there are many, many issues that are not being addressed.
00:30:19We have made many, many pleas to the Minister of National Security.
00:30:24I usually give him a question on notice every single year with regards to crime in Karen East.
00:30:30And the response is basically a carbon copy of the year before.
00:30:35Every single year he actually says the exact same thing.
00:30:38And nothing is being done.
00:30:40Nothing is being done to help the residents of Karen East and environs.
00:30:45You know Dr. Sitcharan, you mentioned something earlier.
00:30:49And I was a bit surprised by what you said.
00:30:53You spoke about the vehicles that have been assigned to your area.
00:31:00And maybe about a year ago, over a year ago, a caller had told me that in Karen East there was no police vehicle for a period of time.
00:31:15And every other day we would speak about it quite publicly.
00:31:20And he called me one day and he said, well we have a vehicle now, but it's a derelict vehicle.
00:31:27And I said to him at that time, and as I said to you, Doctor, I'm a bit shocked this morning that we're still speaking about the lack of police vehicles in your area.
00:31:40And adjoining communities because it's such a large area.
00:31:45So how do you expect police officers to police the community with one vehicle, no vehicle, or a derelict vehicle?
00:31:56Marlon, it's even worse than that.
00:32:00Besides vehicles, which is of course a major, major issue, police officers have to be able to respond.
00:32:06But they also have to be able to respond effectively.
00:32:09They don't have the weaponry to engage these criminals.
00:32:12For example, the killings that took place in Kunupia on the main road.
00:32:19The vehicle that did the shootings, they drove straight past the Kunupia police station after they did their act.
00:32:27We have instances where at a bar, 50 meters from the Kunupia police station, a patron was killed.
00:32:36And the person that did the shooting walked straight past the police station after.
00:32:43And this is 50 meters from the police station.
00:32:46So police officers, they don't have body armor, they don't have the guns to engage these criminals.
00:32:52They are fearful for their own safety, as well as they don't have vehicles.
00:32:57So this has been an ongoing issue in Karani among our three police stations.
00:33:04And every year we try to engage with the Minister of National Security.
00:33:08And he usually tells us not to worry, it's being addressed.
00:33:12But every single year we see that it's not actually being addressed at all.
00:33:16Yeah. You feel that, and I speak to you in the context of a Member of Parliament now,
00:33:23who contributes to legislation and the passage of legislation and laws and so on in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:33:33You feel the laws have been working well.
00:33:35Recently the Prime Minister was speaking about some of the rulings that he has been seeing in the courts.
00:33:42And it's not the first time that he has spoken about that,
00:33:46believing that maybe the courts are a little too soft on the criminals.
00:33:50I am of the view that the political arm should not interfere with the judiciary.
00:34:00They are independent of each other.
00:34:03I have faith in our judiciary, as well as the workings of our courts at all levels.
00:34:12The High Court, the Appeal Court, and whatnot.
00:34:15So I have confidence in our judges and in our judiciary.
00:34:20And I would prefer not to attack our judges and their decisions.
00:34:27In many cases, I support them in their duties, similar to the fact that I support our police officers.
00:34:36But each arm, be it the TTPS or be it our judiciary, they need the resources.
00:34:42So we have a huge backlog of cases in the judiciary.
00:34:47And we have to get these cases through the system.
00:34:52Persons are on bail and they are not having their cases heard.
00:35:00So we need persons to be able to access justice, be it the victims or the accused.
00:35:06So there are a number of bottlenecks in the system, and these need to be addressed.
00:35:12And year upon year, we are seeing that governance is not effective presently as we see it in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:35:21Yeah. Dr. Sitcharan, it was a pleasure speaking with you this morning, even under these circumstances, right?
00:35:28But we do appreciate you spending some time with us this morning.
00:35:32Bye for now, Dr. Sitcharan.
00:35:34Thank you for having me, sir.
00:35:36Of course. Alright, so it's time for a quick break, but we first have this.
00:35:40After we come back, it's from Mikel Carr. Are those his fishes?

00:39:28Alright everybody, so we are taking your calls now.
00:39:31You're calling us on 623-1711, the extension, it's 1995.
00:39:34We just have about 10 minutes to take your calls.
00:39:36I know that you may have a lot on your chest to get off this morning.
00:39:40Yeah, you can call and just do it respectfully and we'll take your calls, alright?
00:39:44You know, I want to speak about the police's response to this situation.
00:39:49And let me tell you about this statement that they sent out yesterday.
00:39:53And to me this is telling, quite telling and frightening.
00:39:56One of the individuals was armed with a rifle.
00:39:59Who now joining us? Let me say it again.
00:40:02One of the individuals was armed with a rifle and the other with a shotgun.
00:40:08This is not an individual or individuals who are armed with a slingshot, you know.
00:40:14Weapons of war made their way onto the compound yesterday.
00:40:20And I would have thought that by yesterday after the incident,
00:40:26or by late evening, or by this morning,
00:40:29we would have had senior officers within the police service
00:40:35coming to speak about this situation and giving assurances
00:40:39what is going to be put in place to deal with things like that.
00:40:43You see this? You see this that the police service has sent out here?
00:40:49This is absolutely not enough. Absolutely.
00:40:52Who do we have on the line? Diego Martin, good morning.
00:40:54Martin, good morning.
00:40:56Good morning to you sir. God's richest blessing to you.
00:41:00This is the land of the living.
00:41:02Marlon, let me be honest with you.
00:41:07I would have been less than honest if I didn't take up Dr. Siposad on his comments.
00:41:14Is it Siposad or Sipcharan?
00:41:16Sipcharan.
00:41:18On his comments.
00:41:20He made it very obvious, although he attempted to make the statement
00:41:30that he is not being political, the police cannot be everywhere at the same time.
00:41:39I am a victim of crime myself and while I remain, after all these years,
00:41:46semi-incapacitated as a result, I have been looking at the shenanigans overall.
00:41:55I cannot understand for the better judgment to be,
00:42:00why we have so much of stratification within this society
00:42:05when it comes to the safety of the public and the citizens at large.
00:42:12We have to be honest.
00:42:13There is a tapestry involving success.
00:42:18And if we cannot get these working together in the interest and effectively for the population,
00:42:27we would arrive at the position of zero in terms of our efforts to that end.
00:42:35So Dr. Sipcharan, let us be upfront, let us be honest, let us look at things objectively.
00:42:43Let us work together as a people.
00:42:47There is a backlog and I don't think the Prime Minister uttering the enunciation
00:42:53were one of interference at all.
00:42:56I am apolitical.
00:42:59I am looking at this very objectively because like I said, I have been a victim of crime.
00:43:04So let us, as a people, look at things objectively.
00:43:08And if we can look at things objectively,
00:43:09we will get where we are attempting to reach in a reasonable timeframe.
00:43:14Have a blessed day.
00:43:16Thank you very much.
00:43:18So let me get back to this.
00:43:20Somebody call the police commissioner and tell her that I'm speaking about her.
00:43:23Because I know she doesn't like to speak to the media.
00:43:25And apparently, you know, we've been trying to get other senior officers
00:43:30to speak to members of the media.
00:43:32But, you know, approval has not been coming from the police commissioner's office, right?
00:43:35So after saying that, I don't know the next time you may see a senior police officer
00:43:40on the Morning Edition set.
00:43:42Because apparently, you know, there's a bit of energy
00:43:46when it comes to our requests and denials to our requests
00:43:51for police officers to appear on the Morning Edition.
00:43:54All right. Madam Commissioner, I'm coming back to you.
00:43:56Let's take our next call.
00:43:58Good morning, caller.
00:44:00Blessed morning to you, Mr. Maran.
00:44:03Morning.
00:44:05Maran, this thing, this crime situation,
00:44:10and this what has occurred, are they informing?
00:44:14Not too far from me.
00:44:16I am very scared.
00:44:18And I'm seeing the criminals showing they do not care.
00:44:23They do not care about no law enforcement agency.
00:44:29They don't care about the police, the army.
00:44:32And I don't know if the government is realizing this.
00:44:36I say this to say, Marlan,
00:44:38you're talking about 10.30 in the morning.
00:44:41You just move along.
00:44:43I'll show you parts of that hospital already
00:44:45and see how at 10.30, how it has been there.
00:44:48With people going to the eye clinic,
00:44:50people going to the cancer,
00:44:52those two services being offered there now.
00:44:56And I am saying, two guys will come with long guns,
00:44:59those machine guns they had.
00:45:01A rifle and a shotgun.
00:45:03And nobody can hold.
00:45:05And a shotgun and a thing.
00:45:07Marlan, nobody can hold.
00:45:09You know, some people using the excuse of
00:45:11crime all over the country,
00:45:13because of the defendants and the position of the political party, right?
00:45:16But Marlan, the difference is that
00:45:18when if that was happening in Queens or anywhere in Canada,
00:45:21they will hold these guys.
00:45:23Somebody go get hold.
00:45:25They're holding nobody.
00:45:27Marlan, I have neighbors.
00:45:29Everything I do of them, down in the back,
00:45:31that's where the next instance I have,
00:45:33where they put that eye clinic,
00:45:35way down in the back, they put elderly people.
00:45:37I have a serious problem with that too.
00:45:39And I am saying, anybody could have been wounded.
00:45:42I was in the military.
00:45:44I know about firearms and everything.
00:45:46And I am saying, this government needs to take action
00:45:49against the criminals and them.
00:45:51The criminals are dominating.
00:45:53Marlan, nobody is safe.
00:45:55So when they go and they clap and are red and ready
00:45:57and are all this and I love this,
00:45:59yellow and I love this,
00:46:01Marlan, those things will not help us.
00:46:03Marlan, we're in deep, deep, deep trouble, Marlan.
00:46:06We're in deep trouble.
00:46:08But you know what?
00:46:10But where's the leadership?
00:46:12In times of crisis, where's the leadership?
00:46:14As I said, I thought that after the incident,
00:46:17by at least yesterday evening,
00:46:20we would have had someone face the media.
00:46:24Or if you want, have a video recording, you know.
00:46:27And send it out to members of the public
00:46:29so they know that you have the situation under control.
00:46:33Or they send out a release.
00:46:35Two men running the hospital with a rifle and a shotgun
00:46:38and you feel that this is sufficient?
00:46:42This piece of paper?
00:46:44Or a backward, a backward group of people?
00:46:48Let's take another call.
00:46:50Dabadee? Dabadee, you there?
00:46:52Good morning, Marlan.
00:46:54Yes, Marlan?
00:46:55Hello?
00:46:57Go ahead, sir.
00:46:59Yeah, thank you very much, Marlan.
00:47:01Marlan, wonderful program.
00:47:03And this thing that happened here today at the hospital
00:47:07is really unacceptable.
00:47:09However, I have a little beef with Mr. Situ
00:47:13on this morning.
00:47:15The question that you asked about injury.
00:47:17Marlan, the police is doing an excellent job
00:47:21in having to execute an arrest person.
00:47:26And when you go before the court, Marlan,
00:47:29I mean, persons getting bail for serious, serious crime.
00:47:35And how could you be supporting the judiciary?
00:47:39We know it's independent, but that is foolishness.
00:47:42Yeah.
00:47:44All right.
00:47:46Yesterday, yesterday, a member of parliament
00:47:48was reprimanded and discharged.
00:47:52But, Lord Jesus, what else the police had to do
00:47:56when you're bringing evidence before the court?
00:47:59And for things that are charged.
00:48:02Yeah.
00:48:04There was another incident this week, Marlan,
00:48:06and I'll end with this one,
00:48:08where the judge is saying now
00:48:11that he does not believe
00:48:14that people were in the face of the police.
00:48:17Marlan, every day we sit on your program,
00:48:20where people are up in the face of police.
00:48:23They have no respect for the police.
00:48:25And the judge is saying now
00:48:27there's no justifiable evidence
00:48:29that people could be that close to the police.
00:48:32But let me also tell you, Paula,
00:48:34that in recent times, when you're looking,
00:48:37when you're looking at the executive level
00:48:39of the police service for that level of leadership
00:48:42and assurance, it's absent.
00:48:43And it's only silence across the board.
00:48:46Because I feel that maybe they feel, well, silence.
00:48:49If they are silent,
00:48:51it means that the incident did not happen.
00:48:54You understand? You get my drift?
00:48:56He's gone?
00:48:58Well, here's what.
00:49:00As I told you earlier today,
00:49:02there was a triple murder.
00:49:04Five people shot in Icacos.
00:49:07Right?
00:49:09Three of them have died.
00:49:11Let us see what the response is
00:49:13today from the police service.
00:49:16Will the police commissioner come to the population
00:49:19and speak about this
00:49:21and try to give assurances to people
00:49:23in Trinidad and Tobago that are under pressure,
00:49:25that are fearful?
00:49:27Yeah? Let's see what happens.
00:49:29Tobago is on the line.
00:49:31Good morning, Tobago.
00:49:33Hi, good morning.
00:49:35I'm just calling to explain something
00:49:37concerning the judiciary
00:49:39and some of the criminals that people
00:49:40tend to say that the judiciary let them off.
00:49:43For instance, you may have a case
00:49:45and the police not bring in disclosure
00:49:47and you have someone inside there 20 years
00:49:49and every time they go before the judge
00:49:53and they're asking the police for disclosure,
00:49:57either the police on two weeks holiday,
00:49:59three weeks holiday, they don't leave.
00:50:01So what would you do
00:50:03if you have someone inside 20 years
00:50:05and by the time they get sentenced,
00:50:07they already get the sentence out
00:50:08so we can't blame the judiciary alone.
00:50:11Sometimes we may have to see
00:50:13what the police are doing with the disclosure
00:50:15when we're waiting for disclosure
00:50:17for the criminals and that.
00:50:20Every day, trust and confidence low.
00:50:23Trust and confidence low.
00:50:25Trust and confidence low.
00:50:27You see something, say something.
00:50:29You see something, say something.
00:50:31But when you're looking to you all for leadership,
00:50:33absolutely nothing.
00:50:35Absolutely nothing.
00:50:36Absolutely nothing.
00:50:38Five murders occurred overnight.
00:50:42There was this shooting at this hospital.
00:50:45Yeah?
00:50:47And nobody accept a statement or a send out.
00:50:51Because why?
00:50:53All you feel you don't have to tell nobody nothing?
00:50:55Yeah?
00:50:57It's not taxpayers' money all you're using.
00:50:59So all you do is nothing to tell nobody.
00:51:01Who do we have?
00:51:03Good morning.
00:51:04Good morning.
00:51:06Good morning.
00:51:08Yes?
00:51:10Yes.
00:51:12I do understand your rant, you know.
00:51:14Because every week you have Sergeant Ford
00:51:16or Inspector Ford on your program.
00:51:18Why you don't brace him at all those questions?
00:51:20Sergeant Ford is here for a particular purpose.
00:51:22And it's just to really speak.
00:51:24No, no, no.
00:51:26Hold on.
00:51:28Sergeant Ford is here for a particular purpose.
00:51:30If Sergeant Ford is here to speak about extortion,
00:51:32he's here to speak about extortion.
00:51:34Not in a wide context of crime.
00:51:36He's not here in that context.
00:51:38He's here for a particular purpose.
00:51:40What, every Tuesday?
00:51:42Right.
00:51:44Yeah?
00:51:46So let me not get things tied up in this place.
00:51:48Right?
00:51:50Okay, so if we're speaking about gang activity,
00:51:52there's a senior officer to speak about gang activity.
00:51:54If we're speaking about crime,
00:51:56there's a senior officer to speak about crime.
00:51:58And it is not that we have not tried.
00:52:00But every time we have tried,
00:52:01the request has been denied.
00:52:03All right?
00:52:05So what I'm going to do
00:52:07is that I'm going to start making a note of it.
00:52:09And at the end of the year,
00:52:11I will say request made on this date,
00:52:13request made on this date,
00:52:15deny, deny, deny, deny, deny.
00:52:17Yeah?
00:52:19Let's take Santa Cruz.
00:52:21Santa Cruz, good morning.
00:52:23Good morning, Marlon.
00:52:25Don't let them set up your pressure and things like that.
00:52:27Well, at least my pressure going up
00:52:29because their pressure not going up.
00:52:31Okay, I have three things to deal with.
00:52:33The first one is that
00:52:35I went to renew my driving permit
00:52:38and they say I have to have a utility bill.
00:52:40Yes.
00:52:42And at the same time,
00:52:44and at the same time,
00:52:46they're telling me everything is online.
00:52:48So how it could be online
00:52:50and still have a utility bill?
00:52:52To get the utility bill,
00:52:54you have to go and pay for one.
00:52:56So I'm calling on the Minister of Work
00:52:58to remove that decision.
00:52:59There's a nice post office here
00:53:01in lower Santa Cruz area
00:53:03where everybody could walk it.
00:53:05But when you go there,
00:53:07you can't get a stamp, a dollar stamp.
00:53:09You have to pay passes to go somewhere
00:53:11to get a dollar stamp.
00:53:13So I'm calling on the Minister,
00:53:15again, of Public Utilities,
00:53:17to look into that,
00:53:19that they cannot have a post office
00:53:21and do not have stamps selling in it.
00:53:23The third one, which is very, very quick,
00:53:25it is time that the Minister
00:53:27of Social Development
00:53:29remove the whole question
00:53:31of the senior citizens
00:53:3380, 90 years having to go
00:53:35and prove that they're still alive.
00:53:37I think you could have a system
00:53:39like what the NIB have,
00:53:41where you have it with legal appearance
00:53:43that people do not have to go there.
00:53:45If we care about senior citizens,
00:53:47then we wouldn't have them at 90 years
00:53:49on a wheelchair going to prove
00:53:51that they're alive.
00:53:53Thank you, Marlon.
00:53:54God bless.
00:53:56Yeah.
00:53:57So after my comments this morning,
00:53:59I'm going to go to a break, yeah?
00:54:01Yeah, no, no, no.
00:54:03Let me not go to no break yet.
00:54:05I have about 15 seconds.
00:54:07Don't go to no break yet.
00:54:09Don't get no frightened.
00:54:11Don't get no frightened, right?
00:54:13Because I feel in times of crisis,
00:54:15our leaders have to come
00:54:17to the population
00:54:19and speak with them
00:54:21and take questions.
00:54:23You know, it's just a stone's throw
00:54:25away this facility
00:54:27is from St. James Police Station.
00:54:29And if the police,
00:54:31if the getaway vehicle went east,
00:54:33well, maybe the St. James police officers
00:54:35could have arrested them.
00:54:37Or if they got a little too far,
00:54:39Woodbrook police officers,
00:54:41or if they headed west,
00:54:43Four Roads Police,
00:54:45or they don't want those questions
00:54:47answered at all.
00:54:48So we must just sit down like some
00:54:50moomoos and say nothing, right?
00:54:52Because we have confidence in that.
00:54:54If we say nothing,
00:54:56well, then the incident has not happened.
00:54:57Right?
00:54:59So we'll see where this conversation leads us.
00:55:01All right?
00:55:03Have a good day, everybody.
00:55:05We're coming back.
00:55:07We have this image from Susanna McLeod.
00:55:09Susanna, thank you very much.
00:55:11We're coming back, everybody.
00:55:13Are you ready?
00:55:15Are you ready for it?
00:55:17Are you ready?
00:55:19Are you ready for it?
00:55:24Whether wet or dry season
00:55:26has a switch strike without warning
00:55:28causing you or your family
00:55:30to quickly evacuate.
00:55:32You may not have the time
00:55:34to grab the essentials.
00:55:36Be sure to have your grab and go bag
00:55:38in easily accessible locations.
00:55:40Here are the top seven categories

00:58:37TNT Friendship Classroom. It's courtesy the Chinese Embassy and it's located at
00:58:42San Juan North Secondary School. Today we would have received 22 laptop devices
00:58:49and we would have finally opened the China Trinidad Friendship Room and we
00:58:57have had quite a good success in computer studies. So this year alone at
00:59:03CSEC level we'd have had 88% of the IT students passing. So this certainly adds
00:59:09to our resources which is unlimited so we are especially grateful. And in the
00:59:16weather forecast expect predominantly hot and sunny conditions which will be
00:59:21interrupted by partly cloudy spells and a few showers. There is a 40% chance of
00:59:28isolated heavy showers or thunderstorms favoring western areas. Tonight expect
00:59:34mostly fair conditions despite isolated showers. Temperatures are expected to
00:59:40climb to 34 degrees Celsius in Trinidad and 32 in Tobago. Seas will be slight to
00:59:46moderate with ways between 1 and 2 meters in open waters and up to 1 meter
00:59:51and occasionally choppy in sheltered areas.

01:02:13St. Augustine says Caribbean populations are particularly vulnerable to damage caused by natural disasters. So this is evidenced by the intense aftermath of Hurricane Beryl across the region. The St. Augustine campus has located
01:02:38the intense aftermath of Hurricane Beryl across the region. The St. Augustine campus has
01:02:43launched the new Hurricane and Earthquake Alleviation Research, or HAER,
01:02:47award with a $10,000 cash prize. We are now joined by Professor Durai Samy,
01:02:54Saravana Kumar, Director of Graduate Studies and Research and Professor of
01:02:58Plant Pathology to tell us more. Professor, always thank you very much for
01:03:03coming this morning. We do appreciate it. Hi, good morning and thanks for having me.
01:03:07Yeah, so Professor let's talk about these awards. Yeah, so St. Augustine campus we
01:03:13have the Principal's Research Awards that was started last year in November
01:03:18and this year also we are continuing. What we are doing is traditionally
01:03:23research is confined to only academic personals, but we wanted to extend to
01:03:28wider population and who is doing research and who is innovating something
01:03:33that can also reduce or minimize the impacts of hurricane or earthquake. And
01:03:39based on that we have titled this award Hurricane and Earthquake Alleviation
01:03:47Research Award. And this has been opened up for all students in the tertiary
01:03:53institutions as well as the secondary schools and the secondary school
01:03:57teachers and also to our own staff and students. What happened in the Caribbean,
01:04:03we all know that we are highly vulnerable to earthquake as well as
01:04:06hurricane and whenever it happens and people may think that what can we do to
01:04:12minimize the impact, be it a health sector or be it agriculture or be it a food
01:04:17security or in case of hurricane packages and construction management. All
01:04:24of these can be done before the occurrence of the disasters and we can
01:04:32minimize the damage caused on all these sectors. To create an awareness we
01:04:39thought it is very important for us not only having the awards to our own staff
01:04:45who is involved in the research, but at the same time we have to make sure that
01:04:50we are creating an awareness and we are creating an environment that will
01:04:55encourages the critical thinking as well as problem-solving through
01:04:59multidisciplinary research and also we would like to bring all people who is
01:05:04doing research or who is inventing something that can minimize the impact
01:05:09of these natural disasters under one umbrella so that we can have a larger
01:05:15group working together when such incidences occur or else even to create
01:05:19the awareness among the people. And that is why our campus principal and provost
01:05:24Chancellor Professor Rosemary Bell Antoine said this year we are not only
01:05:29presenting the awards to our own staff at different levels but we have to have
01:05:34this Hear Award. That's why the name is titled as let us hear from people and
01:05:39let us hear from what is happening in this particular area. That's how we had
01:05:43it as the Hear Award and this award we have already called the applications and
01:05:49we have received so much of applications from the people. You have
01:05:54already received applications? Applications because we call us out
01:05:57since 25th of July. Okay. Yeah and when we looked into those applications I could
01:06:04imagine that the level of innovation the depth of innovation the youngsters are
01:06:10involved in it by doing vertical forming that can give resilience to earthquake
01:06:17as well as the hurricane because when we talk about the resilience, resilience
01:06:21cannot be built just after the occurrence. Resilience it is directly
01:06:27built from the prevention and from the mitigation and from the alleviation. Once
01:06:33we have those things are put in place then the resilience will be stronger. We
01:06:39talk about sustainable communities and resilience but at the same time without
01:06:44having those factors we will not be able to achieve the resilience. Is there still
01:06:49time for people to apply? Yes our deadline is actually tomorrow but based
01:06:56on the requests from the schools as well as the tertiary institutions since the
01:07:01school is open September first week we are planning to extend that to a couple
01:07:06of weeks as well and tomorrow the communication will come from our campus
01:07:12principal about that extension of the deadline so that we encourage because
01:07:17the idea is encourage everyone to apply for this award and also to create
01:07:22awareness so we will be extending that for two more weeks. Where can people
01:07:28register? The information is available in the STA Research Awards website and also
01:07:37the information is posted in all of our social media platforms from the UWI be
01:07:43it a Facebook or else Instagram all those social media platforms has this
01:07:48information they can go to that website and they can see all awards that are
01:07:54available for the staff and the students and this particular here award is open
01:07:59to public as I said they can see the guidelines and the information given
01:08:03there and there is a template wherein they have to put up their information
01:08:08and also what innovation or what research they have been doing to
01:08:12minimize the impact of this natural disasters even in case of coastal
01:08:17management and there is a interest that the coastal communities they are highly
01:08:21vulnerable when such things happen especially the hurricane or tropical
01:08:25storm in such cases whether they can build the resilience through growing the
01:08:29trees or else growing the indigenous or else the resilient systems based on that
01:08:38not only that and how they can make use of those for their livelihood as well it
01:08:43is all interconnected and interlinked in that case we expecting lot of interest
01:08:52and also a lot of applications from at all levels but there has to be a
01:08:57standard and quality you're looking for right when we're speaking about yes
01:09:01search and so on yeah the title for this year's research award is research by all
01:09:08and research for all right we want to make sure that it is not only for the
01:09:12human being but also for the environment and all forms of life because this world
01:09:16is not only for the human species of course is for everyone quality is very
01:09:22important and the judgment will be based on the quality of research as well
01:09:27as how feasible it is someone may have an excellent idea but at the same time
01:09:33whether that is feasible or whether they have tested it or whether they have
01:09:36validated it based on that the selection committee will look into all those
01:09:41applications and we will be selecting it and the awards will be presented on
01:09:46November 14th and not only that what we are going to do is this is the first
01:09:51time we are going to have the principles research awards conference
01:09:54so this conference will be happening on November 15th where all the successful
01:10:01awardees will be doing their presentation we will be inviting both
01:10:06our internal as well as the external stakeholders like the students and the
01:10:10staff and also the ministries and civil society organizations so whoever involved
01:10:15in this type of research they will be attending to it and they will be given
01:10:20the presentations so that they know what is happening and it will be a an
01:10:24excellent platform to bring everyone together who is working on this natural
01:10:30disasters yeah in what form should the applicant submit their contribution is
01:10:40it yeah documentation I can I can I can drive yeah I can I can answer that we
01:10:47have given the email ID that is STA hyphen research dot awards at STA dot
01:10:53UWI dot edu that is the research awards email ID yeah they can get all
01:10:59information in our research awards website and there is a template where we
01:11:03have asked them to provide their information and what innovation they
01:11:07have invented or what research they are doing and they have to develop that
01:11:13document it has to be completed research yeah it is it is it is it is a
01:11:18completed research or else someone may be doing it currently because it they
01:11:23may not have completed for example I have received some applications where
01:11:28they have involved the communities and those research is ongoing as well and
01:11:33those can also be submitted and then after completion of they could include
01:11:39the video link and they could include any of the evidence that they have
01:11:44showing that their research or their work with the community for example when
01:11:51hurricane or the earthquake occurs and if they have a group coordinated action
01:11:58in that community how to act then how that has actually mitigated the after
01:12:05post occurrence that is one thing for example and also the physical and the
01:12:12geophysical mapping of the locations and based on that if someone has developed
01:12:17any virtual augmentation or virtual reality showing that what will be the
01:12:23impact and that virtual reality will minimize the risk what should be done at
01:12:31the time of occurrence of the hurricane or at the time of occurrence of the
01:12:35flooding how we act so that will actually create an environment of rest
01:12:41in in real what we have to do and how we have to face so those type of
01:12:46innovations and those type of research and I have seen some people who have
01:12:51done work on vertical forming which has high resilience to the earthquake as
01:12:58well as the hurricane and even very specifically after burial of the
01:13:03hurricane they they have sent some of the pictures and the photos saying that
01:13:08that has showed or demonstrated resilience that's what we are trying to
01:13:14do here so the applicant makes his or her argument but it must be based there
01:13:24has to be a level of evidence to go with this right certainly there should be
01:13:28some evidence and it should have been validated right yeah that's how we will
01:13:33be able to judge how impactful it is and how relevant it is and not only that
01:13:38what we are trying to do apart from this here award we also have the other awards
01:13:43for our staff that is most impactful community research award and special
01:13:47innovation award and best team research award and best researcher award all of
01:13:51these awardees will also be doing their presentation at the conference yeah that
01:13:56is going to happen on November 15th and also we are going to use the conference
01:13:59as an opportunity to roll out the process map to develop the campus
01:14:05research agenda for the next five years okay which is very important for the
01:14:09campus for the graduate students and also for the staff and also to the
01:14:14funding agency to know that what type of research is prioritized for the next
01:14:19five years based on the United Nations sustainable development goals and also
01:14:24the nation's 2030 document and also based on the regional development yeah

01:17:57all right everybody so welcome back an evening of dance and celebration as
01:18:06Signal Hill alumni choir celebrates its 40th anniversary in style with a concert
01:18:11entitled 2064 a musical odyssey at Shore complex at Shore Park complex in
01:18:18Tobago we are now joined by musical director John Arnold to tell us more
01:18:22about the event mr. Arnold good morning
01:18:26morning so let me just tell you we have four concerts uh-huh so the first one
01:18:35the first one is actually Napa Rima on Saturday September 21st the second two
01:18:45well the second and the third takes place at Central Bank on the 28th and
01:18:5129th and then we close the concert series on the 6th of October Sunday
01:18:58under the distinguished bachelor of excellency Christine kangaroo or TT at
01:19:07the shore park complex and that's on the 6th of October so it's there three
01:19:14weekends of concerts miss Arnold you see 2064 you know a musical odyssey
01:19:21you're not playing a 2064 is really futuristic looking at the next 40 years
01:19:36what we're going to be doing and how we will evolve as a choral organization but
01:19:43we are really really glad that we have so many great guest artists all the main
01:19:48choirs in in Napa Rima we have Southerners in Central Bank we love
01:19:56movement Lydians and the Marinettes and then in Tobago we feature the music
01:20:02amateurs and apart from all that we also celebrate the steel pan in a year like
01:20:08this one when the pan is now a national instrument so in Tobago we have Jamie
01:20:13Ramsey at Napa Rima we have the energetic Joshua Regrello and then at
01:20:20Central Bank we have Kern Somerville so in all it's really a really all-embracing
01:20:29show for everybody it's classical music it's African it's jazz it's soca it's
01:20:36Calypso and it's a real kind of real great celebration yeah and you know
01:20:44mr. Arnold I'm glad that you said that because sometimes when we think about
01:20:48this type of when we think about choirs you know how we think about choirs
01:20:53everyone is and a particular type of music so it's good to know it's really a
01:21:00callaloo of music if I can put it that way it's something for everyone yeah I
01:21:07mean to be quite honest with you I think I told you this last time that choral
01:21:12music is actually the most participatory the performing arts I say that
01:21:17unapologetically because everybody would have had an experience in a choir
01:21:23somewhere in a church in work in some bank whatever choral music is a very
01:21:29popular in a very community and and something that strengthens communities
01:21:34and something that I just experienced in Chicago where they use it as
01:21:41intervention strategies and and they're teaching something like 3,500 choirs
01:21:47across the city in schools and neighborhoods so it's very powerful and
01:21:53so for me it's very serious it's a very serious art form and all of us who do
01:22:00choral music it's not just about singing a la la la and what have you
01:22:04it's really about really kind of the embodiment of joy and the embodiment of
01:22:11really singing and working with people and we're looking forward to that and on
01:22:17the 27th we actually have a school program where we're meeting at Eldorado
01:22:21with over 200 school children in the performing arts who do the performing arts and we are
01:22:27looking forward to that kind of workshop and interaction with them too.
01:22:31Yeah and Mr. Arnold I'm heartened to see number one the work that you all continue to do
01:22:36but I'm also glad to see that how you have made this genre if I can put it
01:22:43that way very palatable for all yeah Mr. Arnold I just have about a minute again
01:22:49anything else you'd like to add?
01:22:51Yeah well, just to tell people tickets are available all cashier outlets in Tobago at Ted Arter Leather Collection
01:23:03from any member of the choir and online queensoiltt.com
01:23:08so I'll be looking forward to everybody coming out and have a great time on the 21st
01:23:13Naparima Central Bank 28th and 29th and the distinguished bachelor of excellency
01:23:22Christine Ganglue will be at Chopin Complex.
01:23:26Yeah, Mr. Arnold always good to speak with you we wish you all the best
01:23:312064 a musical odyssey bye for now Mr. Arnold

01:25:24A message from the TTPS
01:25:28When I was a young boy growing up in Lavantry Road in Febbo Village in San Juan
01:25:33I really had no concept of ever becoming a manager
01:25:36or having an organization of my own
01:25:39or even having my own house
01:25:41and a lot of people reached out and helped me along the way
01:25:44people who helped me who I knew, some of them I didn't know
01:25:47and for that reason I feel it's important now
01:25:50that I give back in any way that I can

01:26:32title sponsor and official bank of the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League
01:26:48Alright everybody so welcome back
01:26:50it's time for our CPL segment
01:26:52we are now joined by Tobago Cricket broadcaster Marcus Daniel
01:26:55Marcus thank you very much for joining us this morning
01:26:58Marcus I was tempted to ask you know
01:27:01as we look at CPL you know
01:27:04and the play that we have been seeing and so on
01:27:07and the teams you know
01:27:10if you have a favorite team but Marcus
01:27:13I don't know what to say
01:27:17so alright so Marcus let's look
01:27:20before we get to TKR let's look at
01:27:23the state of play right now
01:27:26in the CPL what you have seen so far
01:27:29give us an analysis and a synopsis as to what you would have seen
01:27:32thus far
01:27:35yeah I think it's living up to its tagline
01:27:38the biggest guest party in sport
01:27:41as a patron you pay to go and you see
01:27:44to see runs you see wickets and we have been seeing that in St Kitts
01:27:47and Antigua and I'm loving the excitement
01:27:50already we have seen 100 scored by our very own
01:27:53Evan Lewis just last night we saw
01:27:56Shimon Hetmeyer scoring
01:27:59a blister in 91 but what I've loved so far from the CPL
01:28:02this year is that the emerging players
01:28:05they are not given the opportunity to play in the starting 11
01:28:08they aren't just there to make up numbers
01:28:11we also see the young drill in the Antiguan team
01:28:14we also see the Edward Guy from the TKR
01:28:17giving the opportunity to play against the international stars
01:28:20and Rob Schuler with the bigger players
01:28:23but already 8 games in lots of runs as expected
01:28:26when you go to Warner Park and in Antigua
01:28:29and I'm expecting much more
01:28:32and of course me being a fan of 6s and 4s I'm enjoying it
01:28:35yeah alright so Marcus let's talk about TKR now
01:28:38let's look at our chances let's look at the make up of the team
01:28:41this time around and are they in a good position
01:28:44to bring home the trophy
01:28:47I think coming together
01:28:50the coming together of Kyron Pollard
01:28:53Uruan and Dwayne Bravo and all those guys
01:28:56over the last 3 years I mean now is the time
01:28:59I think they have to deliver the title to Trinidad and Bagel
01:29:02given that Dwayne Bravo has announced that he is going to
01:29:06I think this is the year for them to bring that title back to Trinidad and Bagel
01:29:09last year they got to the final
01:29:12and I'm hoping that they would have learnt from that experience
01:29:15I was there live in Guyana and I felt really bad
01:29:18having not crossed 100 batting first
01:29:21and I mean the Amazon Warriors
01:29:24they ran away with the title
01:29:27I think the competition this year we have players coming into the competition in some good form
01:29:30Nicholas Puran in some really good form
01:29:33and we were so good in the last game that we arrested
01:29:36Andre Russell and Aqib Hussain
01:29:39and we were still able to deliver a really good performance
01:29:42so I think barring any kind of unwanted injury
01:29:45I think the team is well balanced this year
01:29:48and I expect that we are going to be lifting the trophy come October
01:29:51How do you view the Guyana Warriors?
01:29:57Yeah well I mean every single year
01:30:00the Amazon Warriors are going to be right up there as our main rival
01:30:03I mean if you look at the support for all the franchises around the Caribbean
01:30:06you look at Guyana and Trinidad
01:30:09they have the 12th man
01:30:12Guyana is just an amazing and electric atmosphere there
01:30:15they have a unit that they would have actually put together over the last few years
01:30:18they are led by a really good captain
01:30:21Iman Tayir
01:30:24he comes here and he plays heart and soul
01:30:27and I think they are well led
01:30:30a good team, a good unit
01:30:33they are missing this year their leading run scorer in Ayub
01:30:36he wasn't given play runs by his board
01:30:39but I think what I saw last night of Hed Meier
01:30:42if it is that he maintains that form
01:30:45they are going to be very hard to beat
01:30:48but I don't think that TKR teams should be daunted
01:30:51because we have a good team that can challenge them
01:30:54Marcus, I don't know about you
01:30:57but I have been paying particular attention
01:31:00to the Patriots
01:31:03and I have been looking at their batting
01:31:06and some of the batsmen that they have
01:31:09to me it is amazing
01:31:12the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots
01:31:15albeit they didn't win much of their games at home
01:31:18I think they have one or two games remaining at home
01:31:21but at least a victory
01:31:24last night they were defeated by Guyana
01:31:27and as I said before they have a really good batting line up
01:31:30with Hed Meier and Fletcher
01:31:33but when it comes to their bowling
01:31:36they are a bit left wanting on that department
01:31:39they are conceding a lot of runs
01:31:42the other team that I am watching
01:31:45the Barbados Royals
01:31:48I think that they
01:31:51can pose a serious challenge
01:31:54to Warriors and TKR
01:31:57Antigua and Barbuda Falcons
01:32:00the new franchise this year
01:32:03four games without a victory
01:32:06I am hoping that their game tonight against the TKR team
01:32:09I can see Mighty Beagle boy Joshua James
01:32:12finally getting a game
01:32:16let's look a little bit
01:32:19I always try to raise this issue
01:32:22because I think it is a very interesting one
01:32:25Marcus where over the years
01:32:28we in the Caribbean
01:32:31we were so accustomed to the test cricket
01:32:34and not this type of cricket that we are seeing
01:32:37at the CPL and so on
01:32:40you think that we are finally supporting it
01:32:43that we are finally coming along
01:32:46and have embraced it now
01:32:49and it is something that we are excited about
01:32:52I missed the question a bit
01:32:55but I am thinking you are asking about support for T20
01:32:58yes I am
01:33:01and you see the times
01:33:04of the games as well
01:33:07it lends for support
01:33:10they go to work during the day
01:33:13and they don't have the time during the day to go and see test cricket
01:33:16and West Indies languishing
01:33:19at number 9 or 10 in the world
01:33:22the product is not exciting or entertaining
01:33:25it is not like we had
01:33:28Vip Richards and Michael Holding
01:33:31and those guys that could have entertained us
01:33:34and would have been getting wins against top teams
01:33:37we play 2 test series
01:33:40and in the whole year we play 8 matches in total
01:33:43but when it comes to the T20 format
01:33:46or the shortest format of the game T10
01:33:49it is entertaining, persons will pay the big bucks just to go and see 6's and 4's
01:33:52it is also a kind of party atmosphere
01:33:55and they have dubbed the CPL the biggest party in sport
01:33:58and you just say party and no one will show up
01:34:01that is our nature
01:34:04you have drinks, you have music
01:34:07you have dancing girls, you have 6's, you have 4's
01:34:10trust me, it is a package
01:34:13a good way to describe it Marcus

01:38:13So welcome back. So we are continuing our discussion on the CPL and we uh do have with
01:38:18us this morning Marcus Daniel, cricket broadcaster. Uh Marcus, let's try to dissect certain aspects
01:38:25of the game now. So we did speak a bit about the uh batting. Let's look at the at the bowling now.
01:38:32Is there anyone who really stands out to you? Yeah I missed I missed the question. Yeah bowling. Let's
01:38:40look a little bit at the bowling now. Are you impressed at all with the with the bowling and
01:38:44the performances that you have seen from some of the bowlers? Oh yeah from from the feelers.
01:38:50You're talking about the feelers right? Bowling. Oh the bowlers. Yeah um I think I think at Warner Park
01:39:00at Warner Park especially um it's a bit difficult for for the bowlers. Um it's a very small small
01:39:06park. The batting batting strip is is conducive for for stroke play and especially at night where
01:39:12the dew factor is is is a concern. Um I mean I speak a thought for the bowlers. I haven't seen
01:39:18any that would have put their hand hand or hands up and and and dominated the batters in St Kitts
01:39:24because um we have seen scores of over 200 runs. That says a lot about the batting. Um in Antigua
01:39:30maybe um we have had some some good bowling performances. No one yet outstanding. Um last
01:39:36year last night I saw Imran Tahir even though he went for for 45 runs he took three wickets
01:39:42um including a million. That was a really good performance by by him. But in terms of dominance
01:39:47from from from the bowlers thus far um I can't say I can't say for certain because um already
01:39:54we have a hundred scored by Evan Lewis. A 91 by by Hetmeyer. We had a uh a 97 by Nicholas Poo and so
01:40:00it's been a batman's world thus far in the CPL. Yeah but you know that there has been some concern
01:40:07about the fielding. You have any views on on that? I hope you're hearing me. The fielding. The fielding.
01:40:17Fielding. I'm just not picking up. Yeah yeah yeah I'll signal to you. I'll signal to you.
01:40:25Yes yes um fielding. Fielding. The fielding has been has been really bad as well. Especially coming
01:40:31from the the St Kitts and Nevis preachers. They've dropped a number of catches and I think it
01:40:35contributed to to to their demise in terms of the amount of games that they would have been
01:40:39defeated. Even Antigua Antigua Antigua Barbuda Falcons um two of their games their first two
01:40:45games could have gone to the win but they would have been defeated because I said again poor
01:40:51fielding. Missed fields. Um missed opportunities where runouts um are concerned. Um drop catches
01:40:57and um sometimes the feelers will say I mean it's difficult to judge the the pace of the ball at
01:41:01night when it goes when it goes into the sky. But um I mean at this level and um having played so
01:41:06many matches you expect that you know those things are are going to be I mean they're making that
01:41:12sense. All right. So Marcos I hope that you are hearing me eh. Because I can't sign this one. So
01:41:20I can't sign this one. This one is going to be difficult to sign.
01:41:24But there have been calls for more franchises. How do you feel about that? More teams in the
01:41:30competition. How do I feel about the teams? More teams. More teams being added to the schedule.
01:41:38How do I feel about the schedule? And more teams.
01:41:43And more teams. More teams. More teams. You see I couldn't sign that one. Technology. Next I promise
01:41:49you next time I'll come to Trinidad to be in the studio with you. Right? Yeah. So we have a better
01:41:53conversation. But yes um I'm I'm not too I'm not too when they say boy they say boy I'm not too fond
01:42:03I'm not too fond of the idea of more teams. I believe in in in in in quality over quantity.
01:42:09Right. Um what I like however is the the the announcement by the the Cricket West Indies
01:42:15that they're gonna have a separate T20 tournament next year um in in in preparation for um the
01:42:22Olympic Games in LA that's come next four years. So to get the to get a team from the from this
01:42:29region they will they will be doing a separate T20 tournament and I'm happy for that because
01:42:33I don't think we we are we are seeing the best of the Caribbean given the franchise type um franchise
01:42:39style cricket. Um I mentioned earlier I like this year that I'm seeing more young players playing
01:42:43for the franchises. But still I believe we have a number of other players that we are not seeing on
01:42:48the world stage. So I'm really happy um for that announcement and I'm hoping that it comes it comes
01:42:53to bear fruit. Yeah. Alright Marcus please stay with us. We are going to another break. We are

01:47:04All right, everybody. So, welcome back. So, we are continuing our discussion on CPL and we do
01:47:09have a cricket broadcaster, Marcus Daniel, who is still with us. Marcus, you know, in recent days,
01:47:16the CPL has been in high praise of Bravo and they have spoken about his contribution to CPL
01:47:27and the exposure of CPL by Bravo. Let's talk about his contribution.
01:47:35Yeah, Dwayne Bravo, I can take you back to some years. In my playing days, I would have played
01:47:41against Dwayne Bravo at the under-19 level, him and Lendell Simmons and those guys. And to see
01:47:47where he has come from back then to now, being a household name not only in the Caribbean but
01:47:54around the world. And the thing about Dwayne Bravo is not just about cricket, you know,
01:47:59even for singing as well and being that flamboyant person. And his contribution not only to the
01:48:05Trinidad and Tobago but this product that is called the CPL, the biggest party in sport,
01:48:10he would have actually moved from the Red Steel team, the TKL team, to St. Kitts and would have
01:48:15won a title there. And everyone spoke about his leadership skills. He tries his very best to bring
01:48:21the younger players to his level as well. I think Bravo's contribution is something we can't pay
01:48:27for and I'm hoping that when he hangs his boots up in the CPL, there can be another contribution
01:48:32that he will make off the field of play because we need Bravo and his experience. That's something
01:48:37that they can't pay for, as I mentioned before, and it's something that we are lacking when it
01:48:41comes to Western cricket. Someone to nurture our younger players. Someone who would have been
01:48:46a young player and would have actually moved on to seniority and would have done extremely well.
01:48:51I mean, he's the leading wicket-taker in the CPL among Caribbean players. When he goes to the group,
01:48:58when he thinks about the IPL as well, dominated there as well, and he's back here playing for
01:49:02the TKL. And I would really love, love that he gets a really good send-off. And that good
01:49:06send-off would be lifting the trophy with the Trinbago Knight Riders. Yeah. All right, Marcus,
01:49:12please stay with us again. We must go to a very short break. We're coming back, everybody.

01:53:51Let's look at the TKR. What can we expect that this evening.

01:53:58know, sometimes teams are separated. The winning team and
01:54:03the other teams are separated by a few things, very, very simple
01:54:07things and fine things. So let's let's deal with that. When you
01:54:12look at the differences between what will be the winning team
01:54:15and the other teams and the TKR performance this evening.
01:54:20Yeah, I am I'm looking forward to a really on one performance
01:54:24from the Trimbago Knight Riders. I think that when you look at
01:54:29their main rival, the Amazon Warriors, they have two games,
01:54:32two victories and two comprehensive wins as well. And
01:54:35you want to you want to get to a stage where you want to finish
01:54:39on the top with the top two. So you have two bites of the cherry
01:54:42to get to the final or win and go straight to the final set. So
01:54:46tonight's game against the Antigua Barbuda Falcons, I
01:54:50expect that they're going to try to keep the pressure on Antigua
01:54:54because Antigua played four games so far and they have not
01:54:57won any one of those four games. As I said before, I hope that
01:55:00when the Antigua team, our boy from Trimbago here, Joshua James
01:55:03gets a play tonight, I think they are missing Brandon King.
01:55:07They are missing Brandon King. They're missing him. His
01:55:09experience last year, he would have captained that team. Well,
01:55:11the Jamaica Teller was, but they are now the Antigua Falcons.
01:55:16But coming off that big win for us in the first game, I expect
01:55:19that we're going to see more fireworks from Nicholas Pruan
01:55:22and the likes. Yeah. Marcus, it was a pleasure speaking with you
01:55:26this morning. Thank you very much. Bye for now.
01:55:29Yes, man. All right.
01:55:31All right. So before we leave, I just have this for you. So the
01:55:35Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hines strongly
01:55:38condemns the recent tragic death of Jamal Watts and calls for
01:55:42united community efforts to combat gun violence in Trinidad
01:55:45and Tobago. This murderous incident is now under active
01:55:49police investigation. One more thing before I leave, Minister
01:55:53Hines has noted with grave concern a recent unfounded and
01:55:56libelous accusation via a circulated social media. He
01:56:01wishes to clarify that he has no connection with Mr. Watts
01:56:04employment at the NWRHA. All right. So you'll hear more about
01:56:09the story in the news this evening. Bye, everyone. See you
01:56:12tomorrow.
01:56:19Independent champion is back.
