00:00The Law, a creation of man, and Justice, a universal ideal.
00:08It all begins in the Shelton household, where Clyde, an engineer, lives with his wife and
00:13daughter.
00:14One afternoon, while the family enjoys a peaceful dinner, two criminals, Darby and James, break
00:20into their home.
00:21Clyde is subdued and injured, while his wife is brutally killed.
00:25The tragedy intensifies when Darby acts on his base instincts with the woman's corpse.
00:30Clyde's daughter appears on the scene, and Darby, in a monstrous act, takes her and leads
00:34her to a room, where he also takes her life.
00:37Eventually, both criminals are captured, and Prosecutor Nick, known for his impeccable
00:42record, takes the case, seeking justice for Clyde.
00:46However, Nick opts for a deal with Darby, the murderer of Clyde's family, offering
00:50a reduced sentence in exchange for a guilty plea, while James would receive a harsher
00:55sentence.
00:56This agreement infuriates Clyde, who cannot accept that the mastermind behind the murder
01:00of his family will only serve a few years in prison.
01:03Nick justifies his decision by arguing that a forensic error compromised the evidence,
01:08and that accepting this small victory is preferable to risking losing the trial altogether.
01:13Desperate, Clyde pleads for the deal not to be made, but his pleas are ignored, and Darby
01:17receives only a short sentence.
01:20Upon leaving the courthouse, the press harasses everyone involved, and Darby, brazenly, thanks
01:25Nick for his help with a handshake, all under Clyde's incredulous gaze.
01:30Ten years later, James is sentenced to death, and Nick is present during the execution.
01:34However, due to a chemical alteration in the lethal injection, James suffers a slow and
01:39agonizing death.
01:41Nick, bewildered, investigates who could have tampered with the substance.
01:45Upon discovering the origin of the altered chemical, Darby becomes the prime suspect.
01:50When the police go to apprehend him, Darby is alerted by a phone call.
01:54Realizing that he could return to prison, Darby flees, following the instructions of
01:58the stranger on the call, who guides him to a patrol car with an unconscious officer.
02:03Believing he has escaped, Darby thanks the man on the phone, unaware that it is a trap.
02:08The officer is, in fact, Clyde, who reveals his identity, reminding Darby that he took
02:13away the most precious thing he had.
02:15Desperate, Darby tries to shoot, but his weapon is disabled.
02:19Clyde paralyzes him with an injection, taking him to an abandoned house where he brutally
02:23dismembers him, forcing him to watch every moment reflected in a mirror above his head.
02:29The police find Darby's remains, in 25 pieces to be exact.
02:33The prosecutor proceeds to arrest Clyde, as the property where Darby was found belongs
02:37to him.
02:38Clyde does not resist the arrest at all, as if he wanted to be in prison.
02:42In his house, they find an abundance of law books and newspaper clippings about injustice
02:47in sentencing, something that catches the prosecutor's attention.
02:51Nick meets with Clyde in prison and tries to extract a confession.
02:55Clyde promises to give him one in exchange for a luxury mattress for his cell, mocking
02:59the prosecutor a bit.
03:00At first, Nick does not seem to give in, however, a video apparently from his daughter's violin
03:06recital arrives at his family.
03:08In the end, it was of Clyde dismembering Darby, and his daughter saw the traumatizing act,
03:13leaving him frustrated.
03:14Additionally, Clyde's face was covered while committing the atrocity, so only the confession
03:19serves due to lack of evidence, and he ends up accepting.
03:23In his parole hearing, Clyde uses various precedents to convince Judge Laura.
03:27He has undoubtedly studied everything very well, however, before the judge accepts his
03:32petition, Clyde actually confesses that he had used false precedents and demonstrates
03:36how bad the law is and how little justice matters.
03:39Launching a speech against the judicial system that defends ordinances of little legal significance
03:44over justice.
03:45The judge, in an excellent scene, angry and alleging contempt, denies his petition and
03:50leaves him in jail, which Clyde doesn't seem to resist much either.
03:54Nick delivers Clyde his mattress and receives his confession of the murders of Darby and
03:58James, but Shelton offers him another deal, a luxury meal and an iPod to listen to music
04:04that will be delivered exactly at one o'clock, in exchange for the life of Bill Reynolds,
04:09Darby's lawyer.
04:10However, the deliveries are delayed by 8 minutes, and Clyde still agrees to give the coordinates
04:15of Bill's location.
04:16With the information, Nick hurries to follow the coordinates with a helicopter to arrive
04:20as soon as possible.
04:22Meanwhile, Shelton shares his lunch with his cellmate, but our protagonist doesn't seem
04:26to have good intentions.
04:28Nick finally arrives at the location and indeed finds Bill buried with oxygen tanks.
04:33However, they discover that he has already passed away, as the minutes they took to give
04:37Clay his meal were crucial for Bill.
04:39Speaking of our protagonist, Clyde, after finishing his banquet, uses a bone and repeatedly
04:44stabs his cellmate until he's lifeless, which leads to him being isolated in a maximum security
04:49cell.
04:50Nick visits him to reproach him for the things he's doing, but Clyde claims to be free of
04:54all guilt, as it was Nick who didn't comply with what was asked of him.
04:58His colleague Jonas seeks Nick to meet with a guy who does dirty work for the government
05:01and who was once Clyde's colleague.
05:03He reveals that our protagonist has worked in covert operations for the CIA, that he's
05:07someone to be feared as he's a natural strategist, and if they want to stop him, they have to
05:12shoot him directly in the head, because if not, he will end all those who were involved
05:16in his family's case.
05:17With this information, the prosecutor asks his assistant Sarah to schedule an appointment
05:22with the case judge.
05:23Jonas and Nick, meeting with the judge, ask for authorization to keep Shelton in the maximum
05:28security cell, as they consider that this way they can keep him under control, even
05:33though this implies violating Clyde's rights.
05:36The judge agrees to give the authorization, and at that moment, while trying to answer
05:40a call, her cell phone explodes and sends her to a better life.
05:44After this, the prosecutor confronts Clyde, and our protagonist tells him that the murders
05:48are not for revenge, but to show the failure of the legal system.
05:52He also threatens that if they don't release him and drop the charges against him by morning,
05:57everyone who works for the prosecutor's office will be left lifeless.
06:01While Clyde is sent back to the maximum security cell, but this time chained, Nick gathers
06:05Sarah and his entire team to find the accomplice they assume is helping Clyde from the outside
06:10to commit all the homicides.
06:13After working all night looking for a suspect, six in the morning arrives and everyone is
06:17extremely scared.
06:18As nothing happens, Nick asks them to go rest and then continue with the work.
06:23In the parking lot, as Sarah and her colleagues were getting into their vehicles, they end
06:27up exploding before Nick and Jonas' eyes, who can do nothing about it.
06:31The mayor scolds Jonas and Nick because they can't explain how a locked-up man is causing
06:35such havoc and ending lives.
06:38She will assign them protection to keep them safe while they find a way to stop Clyde Shelton.
06:43After that, Nick and Jonas start looking for Shelton.
06:46After sending his family to safety, Nick seeks Clyde to unleash his fury for what he did
06:50to his colleagues and his friend Sarah.
06:52For Clyde Shelton, none of this would have happened if he hadn't accepted his deal with
06:56Darby.
06:57Moreover, he threatens the prosecutor with ending the entire corrupt system that exists
07:02and reproaches him for having made a bad decision in making a deal with a murderer, making it
07:06clear that this is just the beginning.
07:09After Sarah's funeral, where Jonas and Nick begin to feel guilty, a remote-controlled
07:13robot armed with machine guns and a powerful manually operated rocket launcher attacks
07:17them in the middle of the cemetery and ends up killing Jonas before the helplessness of
07:22Nick, who can do nothing.
07:24The mayor, being aware of this, does not accept Nick's resignation, who no longer wants to
07:28continue on the case and makes him swear in replacement of Jonas to remain in charge
07:33and solve the problem.
07:35The prosecutor, who initially thought that Clyde had accomplices outside prison who did
07:39the dirty work, discovers that this is not the case.
07:42Nick reveals that Clyde owns a building adjacent to the prison, which leads him to investigate
07:46the place.
07:47There he finds a tunnel that connects to the isolation cell, from where Shelton enters
07:51and exits at will.
07:52He also discovers a plan to detonate a bomb in Philadelphia City Hall, where the mayor
07:56will meet.
07:57Nick finds the explosive in a briefcase, but unable to deactivate it, he devises a
08:02plan to end it all once and for all.
08:04The prosecutor waits for Shelton in his cell, who is surprised to see him.
08:08Nick offers Shelton one last chance, but he rejects it and warns him that what he's about
08:12to do is not right.
08:14Clyde detonates the bomb without knowing that Nick had hidden it under his bed.
08:17The prosecutor quickly moves away while locking Shelton in the cell.
08:21Realizing the bomb, Shelton sits on the bed, awaiting his tragic end and looking nostalgically
08:26at the necklace his daughter made him.
08:28Clyde dies incinerated in prison and Nick reunites with his family to enjoy his little
08:33daughter.
08:34Thus concludes the story.
08:36Is a movie that offers an unexpected twist that will leave you breathless.
08:40It's not your typical revenge story, it's an emotional roller coaster with a line between
08:44good and evil blurs.
08:46As I mentioned before, law is a human construct and justice is a universal value.
08:51Gerard Butler delivers an impressive performance as the exemplary citizen who becomes a master
08:55of chaos due to flexible law and his need for justice and revenge.
09:00His character, meticulous and calculating, seeks to make those responsible for the tragedy
09:04that destroyed his life pay.
09:07Revenge was never so sweet.
09:08Jamie Foxx, on the other hand, plays the prosecutor who must face this loose cannon.
09:13His character moves frantically, trying to maintain order while unraveling Butler's Machiavellian
09:18plans.
09:19The chemistry between both actors is electrifying and the movie keeps you on the edge of your
09:23seat from the 10th minute.
09:25Each scene is like a puzzle that slowly assembles, and when you think you have everything under
09:29control, wham, a new plot twist surprises you.
09:33The highlight is that it makes you question, how far would you be willing to go for justice?
09:37Is the system really fair?
09:39In summary, is an excellent suspense movie that will make you reflect, feel, and question
09:43who is right.
09:45Perhaps the ending isn't the most satisfying, but it's a recommendation you can't miss.
09:49Law-abiding Citizen is an emotional roller coaster that will leave you wanting more.
09:54My rating is 4 out of 5 skulls.
09:56I hope you enjoyed the summary and review.
