00:00Republicans are once again raising the issue of voter fraud, despite not a single vote having been cast in the 2024 presidential election yet.
00:08More specifically, they've been pointing to immigrants coming into the U.S. from the southern border, suggesting they might be illegally voting this fall.
00:15So is this something Americans should be concerned about?
00:18Well, probably not, as this type of voter fraud is extremely rare.
00:22The Brennan Center for Justice looked at some 42 jurisdictions that voted in the 2016 election.
00:27That included some 23.5 million votes.
00:30Of those, they only discovered 30 suspect votes that could be further investigated and potentially linked to fraud.
00:36A fraction of a fraction of a percent.
00:39Several southern states have claimed that they have flagged thousands of potential non-citizen voters registered.
00:44However, election experts say this just proves our systems for finding and removing them from voter rolls is working.
00:49That hasn't stopped GOP legislatures in eight states from proposing official constitutional amendments,
00:55which outline explicitly that only citizens, rather than all citizens, can vote.
01:00The White House maintains that these new laws would not stop non-citizens from voting.
01:04Rather, it only makes it harder for eligible citizens to cast their votes.
01:08And the NAACP has long agreed, saying voter ID laws make casting a ballot less accessible for many citizens of color.
