Need a Saw in the woods? Ahem. Film Brain reviews this French horror film that's pretty efficient case of revenge for horror fans, but hardly the cutting edge of originality.

00:00It's a clear-cut case for revenge in the French horror thriller Schlitter, Evil in the Woods.

00:05As a boy, Lucas saw his abusive father kill his best friend Mathias with his car and cover it up.

00:11Now as an adult, Lucas returns to his childhood home after his parents die in a house fire,

00:16but Mathias' father wants to avenge his son's death.

00:19In case you're wondering, a Schlitt is a type of sled used for carrying wood,

00:23up to £500 worth according to this movie,

00:26so you don't want to be, say, strapped to the front of one or have it come directly down a hill at you,

00:31but it makes for an excellent death trap if you're a lumberjack.

00:34And Mathias' father constructs at least one elaborate booby trap that even Jigsaw would be proud of,

00:39which enlivens an otherwise fairly conventional horror film originally made for French television,

00:44and you can tell it was done on a fairly tight budget.

00:47Debut director Pierre Maché does show some flair for the genre,

00:50and like a lumberjack, he keeps things very workmanlike.

00:53It's lean and efficient at just 73 minutes and does exactly what it needs to and no more.
